The front I don't mind, it looks....familiar. It's the back I have an issue with. The two-toned looks awful.

No problems with that here. I think the 4 & 4S look great. Ya I'm a fanboy, but I'm also don't need a redesign just for the purpose of it looking different.

Would you be dissapointed with it? Would you then switch to an Android or Windows Phone? Or would you be excited about it, unable to wait to get your hands on it?

I wouldn't be terribly disappointed because the 4 is the best designed phone on the market in my opinion. I am disappointed in the screen size though. Like others have said, they would have to wow me with something in the OS but I honestly dont think that will happen.

16:9 Screen size, 1 Gig of Ram, LTE, NFC, thinner, lighter. Not enough?

Couldn't care less about the RAM or LTE (UK here). NFC has no real applications yet. 16x9? It isn't a television and this looks very odd on a phone.

Thinner and lighter would be great, but every indication is that once the glass is reaffixed to the back, this phone will be neither thinner nor lighter. And that's one of the things I find to be a letdown. The iPhone is quite thick by today's standards, at least among £500 phones.

I like sarcastic comments

Me too... gotta have a little fun around here.

It counterbalances the super serious attackers, bashers, and all those who've lost their humor years ago...ha..ha... :D

It was a hypothetical scenario... He is asking you to imagine that the keynote has passed and this is what was announced.

Kudos for a great signature :)

And an even BETTER Avatar .... :D

If they call it the iPhone 5... I won't buy it on principle... LOL

----------

Since he's a "Newbie", he's not really an Apple, or iPhone enthusiast. He's just, well...bridge gnoming?

I am listed as a newbie because I haven't been on the forums until recently... but I have been coming to MacRumors at least every other day since right before the iPhone 3G... The first computer I purchased myself was a MacBook Pro for college. I now have a brand new MacBook Pro. (My first computer was a crappy HP my dad bought me for college, it lasted a week after the one year warrantly expired, I wanted the MacBook Pro from the start).

I have had every model of the iPhone, and even though I never thought I would need it, I ended up buying an iPad 2 (Which I now consider a great decision). So "newbie" does not mean anything...

----------

In all seriousness, I will be disappointed if it is only taller, I don't want it to be 16x9 because I don't watch movies on my phone, I don't want a 5th row of apps either.... but that said... I will probably buy it anyway because I did not like Android when I tried it.

Most android phones are tall and narrow. Just sayin. I'd buy the new iPhone if it looks like this. People that think going to android since the possible new iPhone design is too narrow and tall, put your iPhone up to -most- other android phones. The width isn't really that much more.

True, and several are 16x9... but I do not like them, and several of the ones that are 16x9, have 4.5" + screens (these are okay). It just feels like Apple is being "lazy" or it feels like a cop out way to give us a bigger screen IMO. I like the aspect ratio now. I want it the same, just bigger. The most relevant argument against this new design is zooming in on websites and typing in landscape mode (which I never do).

I've got no complaints about the exterior.

I haven't seen a phone design that looked better than the iPhone. In the end it's the software that I interact with and that's what is most importantè on my telefono.

16:9 or 16:10 just doesn't do it for me. Moving from my Droid to the OG, I loved the change of the aspect ratio to 3:2. I don't forsee me ever watching a HD movie on my phone when I have a 60' plasma to watch one on.

You're getting awfully upset about an imaginary device. Did the Easter Bunny pee in your Cheerios this morning?

Not upset. Disappointed. It's pretty clear what this phone is going to be. The writing is on the wall. Maybe you just can't read?

I really like the tall design since it allows more posts to be seen on forums and more of the webpage to be shown with less scrolling.

I'd be impressed. Keeping the glass front and strengthening the back makes perfect sense. As for the display size, I would welcome anything larger. How that plays out with regard to the length/width is something I think we'd all have to see for ourselves. Overall it's the feature set that would make it or break it for most people.

It makes sense. Wider doesn't make that much sense as most smartphones are held in a portrait configuration.

On my phone I need height ...on my iPad I prefer landscape.

The more I look at it, the more I like it. Still not exactly what I would want. If they just make it taller to get a 4" screen, I'd rather see them just shrink the spaces at the top and bottom. There is a rendering out there of this and I like it.

I have considered going to Android, and honestly the main thing keeping me back is that I have EVERYTHING in iTunes. I don't want to change how I'm doing things and have to fix quite a bit of music I have that is still DRM.

I still use my 2 year old iPhone 4. I will be getting whatever they come out with for the 4G (LTE or not) and upgraded camera (the 4 vs 4S camera is a staggering difference.) I will also go from 32 to 64 gig.

So at this point, I'm just anxious for them to release it so I can get the new one!

I'm feeling more and more that a mere stretched 3.5" screen is an insult to Apple's customer base. I'm still holding out hope that this is an elaborate hoax.

No rational company would foist this on the public. Not that it's particularly horrible, but just that there's little point to it. And to hang an entire upgrade cycle on another row of icons is just... insulting.

Wow another Gem from the lone Mensa Member of Macrumors. I'm sooo insulted that Apple gave me a larger screen. Woe is me. What hath Apple brought upon her unsuspecting followers. [/sarcasm]

To be fair, none of the incremental upgrades have been radical improvements over the generation before it. From the 3G to the 3GS, 3GS to 4, 4 to 4S... none have been monumental hardware achievements. The benefit in having the newer devices is incremental. A little faster, a little better camera, etc. But the main changes come through the iOS.

To me, iOS 6 seems like it will be a little underwhelming (but still the best version of iOS, even if Maps is a step backward). So that is disappointing.

As for the actual question posed by the OP... the hardware features of the phone are what need to improve, not the looks. The 4/4S are already the best looking and ergonomic phones on the market (imo). LTE capability should be a big selling point for the general public. For me, the 2-3mbps I get on 3G is sufficient, but a little more overhead would be nice. I don't live in an LTE service area at the moment, but since it will be 2 years before I upgrade, I imagine LTE would be nice to have before the Fall of 2014.

 I would be furious if the new iPhone looked like the old iPhone. Where is the design genuis of Jonnie Ives and the technology to create what should be an AWESOME design and not more of the same that we have seen for years.

I agree with you. and I also hope they are using this as a distraction. It could SOO easily by a prototype from the iphone 4/4S that they scratched. I doubt it will be, but I hope it is. Imagine the reaction if it turns out to be a hoax and they unveil a new design that is amazing.

The double secrecy comment from Tim Cook gives me a little hope that it is a hoax. What better way to keep the real design a secret than to feed us a scratched prototype and its parts??

I wouldn't base if I buy it or not simply on it's looks, but what features it had. So far, we don't know anything about what it'll have under the hood or any tricks it can do.

Agreed. For me, looks is only a small part of my decision on buying a phone. I'm much more interested in the specs.
