We live in a world of social filters the car you drive the sneakers you wear all say something to the world about yourself. With an iPhone you might be working at Target, or Driving a Rolls Royce but we all still share the same iPhone. There’s no style no pizaz. Even Apple themselves have said they are positioned as a Luxury brand. They also have different tiers and Class levels economically based. R, XR, S, and Pro, Pro MAX. Etc

But there’s No ”Luxe” tier. Apple did sell a $10,000 18K Gold Apple Watch. They sell Ceramic $800 Apple Watches, and $500 Hermès watch bands.

Is there an appetite for let’s say a 256GB Ceramic top tier iPhone 12 with Sapphire Glass that’s not scratchable. And has 2GB More RAM
(similarly to the iPad Pro 2018 top tier had 6GB RAM when other iPad Pros had just 4GB) So yes top tier costs money but you get more.

In this case you get the wow factor when people see you’re driving a new 2021 Range Rover or Lambo. Or when they see a “Luxe” iPhone 12 yo that’s a $3,000 phone.

Is this a bad idea ?

P.S. it’s pronounced car-T-A

Not interested. And a bad idea.
And Saphire glass will shatter much easier while not scratch.
And the iPad Pro didn’t even have its 6GB mentioned anywhere by Apple.
And the gold watch was a marketing stunt if any.

Your post highly suggests that you care very much about status. That material possessions define how others perceive you. Whether a person works at Target as you suggested, or is a multi-millionaire....who cares? Perhaps you could focus more on why it is you are so fixated on how a particular phone seemingly defines your status. I assure you, very few to zero people notice, let alone care, what phone you use.

Good point. Would be a suitable roommate for our user Hieveryone or whatever her name is.

100% wrong. I am asking if there is an interest for having a flashy iPhone. I don’t I still rock an 8 Plus. Point is we can’t ignore the world we live in. And there would be that NBA baller, or that Paris Hilton, or 500 daughters or Saudi oil millionares Who don’t want to share the same iPhone as their house keeper.

Wrong place to ask? I doubt there's much interest in such a device here.

Isn't Apple discontinuing Ceramic with the Apple Watch Series 6? That probably tells us if sales were up to Apple's standards.

Yes, there would be people who have an interest in a device that is set apart from the standard. But I don't know that the market would be large enough for Apple to invest in the manufacturing of a device for a presumed limited audience. Apple doesn't create for a niche group. They offer the various sizes, and price points, to appeal to the masses. I apologize for suggesting what I did in my original post. I think I mistook you for alex_the_rat. That put an entirely different lens on my interpretation of the post.

For the 1% there are already many places that can customize an iPhone to suit their needs, I just did a quick google search and this site has many expensive options and one diamond encrusted option going up to $122k

But just going by the best selling iPhone model for the 1st half of the year which is the non-pro model this shows that the majority of people will lean towards the sub $1,000 price

I think social positioning with products reveals the hollow, broken nature of people looking for meaning and importance in a petty way.

I appreciate nice things for my own personal enjoyment. And to share. Beauty, build quality, and engineering are not things to dismiss. But to elevate my status? I don’t need it.

But Apple does make niche high end products as I pointed out. The Ceramic Apple Watch, or the 18K Gold Apple Edition or $500 Heremes straps. Heck you can Spec out a $7,000 MacBook Pro. Why can’t people Who have the money Spec out an Ultra Luxe iPhone, ? Same internals maybe an extra RAM chip. Different body same shape. Just better materials.

Yeah those are fair points. I guess if they wanted to they could. They must have some reason for not doing it, at least yet. I imagine someone well off and in the spotlight like a Kardashian would be all over it.

I don’t think anyone will be wowed by a Cartier iPhone. None of Apple’s products are very exclusive because it’d be contradictory to their mission statement if it was. So in order for it to be in “luxury” status, they would have to basically make their products more exclusive. Most luxury brands work top down (luxury to general audiences) than bottom up.

A specced out MacBook Pro looks the same as the regular one, afaik. One would do that for performance and productivity, not flaunting.

There's the $1449 iPhone 11 Pro Max which I think is already in the same range as the more premium Apple Watches bar the gold Watch edition. Why nothing more premium? Apple should have a very good idea of supply and demand curve. Chances are they make far more profit selling 20+ million iPhone Pros yearly at the current price points than they would if they upped the price to $3000 or something.

The product described is such a vain, narcissistic waste of materials. And for what? To stand out? Does a person suffer that much from lack of self worth and identity that they'd need this bauble to validate themselves? First, I'd suggest investing that money in a good psychologist for starters.

A financially smart individual would care less about what people whom you don't know perceive of you. A financially prudent individual would seek to invest the cash that would otherwise be spent on a depreciating bauble like the OP describes.

One thing I've learned in life is that there is so much freedom and value in being able to blend into the background; be that perfect shade of grey. You'd be amazed what you can get away with. Particularly in a world that increasingly places so much value upon image and brand, there has never been a better time to stealthily make your moves....and truly profit from it.

It's like the German U-boat that crept up on that unassuming, janky-looking freighter in WW1 and decided to use its deck gun rather than a torpedo to send it to the bottom. Until that freighter, called a Q Ship, dropped the trap doors and tarps, revealing huge guns that easily took out the surfaced, vulnerable U-boat sending it to the bottom instead.

Be the Q Ship, blend in, save your cash and make money with money. Slow and steady wins the race.

You’re onto a winner, would work great in the narcissistic world that we all currently live in.
