I love the rear camera but not for photos per se. I use it to deposit checks into my bank account via my bank's awesome iPad app, and to scan and electronically file important receipts and documents.

Right, I just started using the cheque scan feature too. Also, I guess scanning QR codes etc, where you're not trying to take a photograph, but just taking small macro shots to scan things in.

You mean the "iPadC"- I better trademark the name so I make some $$$ if apple makes one...jk!

I don't see a need for apple to do that....isn't it kind of why they sell older ipad models still? Such as they sell the iPad mini 1 and iPad 4, both for $100 less than the flagship???

Would you buy cheaper ipad with less features? I've had this idea, granted it would probably never happen, to lose the back camera , upgrade the front facing camera, make it plastic (although I love the aluminum) and drop it 50-100 dollars. I never use the camera in the back and would love to see it go if it saved me money and I could careless what it's made out of. Touch I.d would probably remain a myth to the iPad line which I wouldn't like but in this mythical ipad scenario I would be ok with that. Do you agree?

Scrap the camera and drop the price $50 and id buy that model each time. Ive never once used any of the cameras on any ipad i owned. Useless for me.

While you may wish for a lower-priced iPad without a camera, the presence of a camera (and the slightly higher price tag) hasn't prevented you from buying one. So as I see it, that doesn't give Apple much of an incentive to make a camera-less iPad.

i would think apple would just keep selling older devices at a discounted price rather than making a whole new iPad. But who knows.

Don't strip features but...

A cheaper iPad mini would be nice. I was thinking, maybe keep the same components of the non-retina iPad mini and upgrade the front camera module and give it an A6 to keep it on the shelves and update cycle longer.

The product lineup would be:

A6 iPad mini non retina @ $229
A7 iPad mini 2 retina @ 299
A8 iPad mini 3 retina @ 399

iPad 4 @ 399
iPad Air 2 @ 499

Noooo.......
I love the feel of the iPad, I love the quality build. I use the rear camera to scan documents, bar codes, copy music among many other things.

Nah. I like the premium feel and overall quality of Apple devices. Sure, they are pricey and you are paying for the better products but they are better. I actually hate cheap, low end electronics. Pure garbage.

The iPod Touch is cheaper to make, still uses an A5 and starts at $199. Somehow, I don't see that $229 iPad Mini w/A6 happening anytime soon.

I was saying this when looking at the fall product line. iPod touch is going A7 as standard with a larger screen and better display and camera that will starts at $299 for 32GB.

iPod touch and iPad serves different market though. (remember when 32GB iPod touch 5 is 299 and iPad mini non-retina is 299 also?)

The $299 iPad mini didn't have 32GB of storage though and Apple introduced a cut down version of the iPod Touch 5th gen with 16GB storage in order to go down to $229. Point is Apple likes its high margins. As long as the iPad mini continues selling well at $299, they're not going to drop their prices. In the US, they have Apple certified refurbs for the more price sensitive.

Again, but I'm aligning my reasoning to the original topic, which is a cheaper iPad possibility. $299 can be a sweet spot for A7 iPad mini retina but not for the non retina version. $229/$249 for the iPad mini A5/6.

Don't give me the 32GB reasoning as we all know that storage is one of the cheaper components of the iPad/iPod.

Refurbished, is another topic entirely (not mass retail pricing).

I'm not "pushing" for it but in terms of imagination, I think its doable if Apple wants to introduce the product to more people.

Exactly. We know it's cheap and yet Apple uses it to justify $100 premiums.

Doable? Yes. However, it's unlikely that Apple will upgrade hardware unless the upgrade somehow makes the device cheaper to manufacture. It's more probable to see features being cut and a move to cheaper materials.

I'd be tempted by a plastic casing as much as anything else. Have never been a big fan of aluminium.

Well said. Unfortunately we have the mental attitude that Aluminium = Quality, Plastic = Junk on most Apple forums, irrespective of anything else.

I wonder if these same people lived on another planet with Aluminium everywhere, and Plastic was a rare and expensive item, they would be saying how amazing premium plastic is, the way you can colour it, the way it will flex without bending, and the way it can deform and spring back.

Not that junk easy to dent aluminium other brands are made of. :D

Lol, that's true. I'm actually quite fond of the slightly rubbery coating used on the Nexus 7. Really helps with the grip. I actually used the iPad 2 sans case for a week or so. Alas, when it slipped from my fingers for the 3rd time (thankfully always on a soft surface), I decided to get a case for it.

I really don't think I would like the feel of plastic. Seems cheap. I just threw that into this discussion as a means to cut cost. I by no means would prefer plastic over aluminum. The only upside would be that it scratches less than aluminum. It still cracks as bad as aluminum can dent

I'd probably buy one for my mother. Androids are just pain in the ass for people who aren't very familiar with tech in general, but Apple doesn't offer budget tablet.

By the way, do people actually care about the cameras on their tablets

To quote Piggie...

I prefer the look/feel of plastic. I think the white 5c is much more handsome than any of the 5s models. I also think the white iMacs and MacBooks were much better looking than subsequent incarnations.

I've come to accept that I'm in a small minority on this, though!

This honeatly spawned from the fact that I think a camera looking outward is one of the most pointless thinks ever on a tablet computer. From there I just started thinking what else could be taken off an ipad that could make it cheaper. I love the quality of all apple products and that's why I only buy apple electronics but I just see useless components for me at least

I use the rear camera. Would not purchase any device without it.

It's actually a very interesting concept when you stop and think about what you'd said.
Don't think would like the feel or plastic, seems cheap.

Strange how this can be.

If someone had never seen plastic then it would not seem cheap.

It can only be a mental thing, where you have seen mass produced items made to a low cost using certain grades of plastic, then you see or feel another item made of a different grade of plastic and make a mental connection as both different materials Come under the lose banner of being called a plastic.

Would a multi million formula one car or luxury yacht seem cheap as it has plastic areas of the construction?

Strange isn't it.
