it's not like a phone or an iPad it's a watch, if it still can tell the time who really cares and also if it's on your wrist who's gonna know it's a s2 or anything else as the watches all look identical.

I’m so glad they still all look the same. I hope apple keep this consistent in the future. It’s nice to have something which doesn’t have a remodel after each model.

Series 0 is stuck at watchOS 4.3.2, Series 1 & 2 at 6.3.
Both are currently NOT usable with iOS 15 on iPhone. They stick in an endless crash/boot loop.
It is not certain, Apple will fix it.

I’m still using my original S2. The battery still lasts at least a day and a half on a charge. I’m planning to upgrade when the 7s are released.

I'd be happy wearing that as a beater for work , doing the garden , going down the dump etc.. and save for something a little better down the line.

You can pay $50 for some china made clone tat from Aliexpress that sets fire to your wrist in a week or a couple of year old apple product, I know what I'd choose.
Huh? It’s an Apple Watch. Nobody buys them for the sole purpose of telling time. That would be like buying an iPhone for the sole purpose of making phone calls which you even mention in your first line.

It is fixable and it's effects all watches, have a pop on apples forum and people running series 6 are returning their watches as they can't be used. It seems a bug in the watch app is to blame. I ran the update on mine as my watch was effected with the bug ( series 1 on 12 pro max iOS 15 beta 3 ). The watch app is telling you your phone is out of date on every device ive tried. My iPhone 6s on 14.7 reports in the app the phone is out of date , iPhone 11 Pro Max on iOS reports out of date and iPhone 12 Pro Max does the same.

I got around the by borrowing an iPhone 6 on 12.x.x which was fully updated to whet is finally supported , I paired it with the 6 which then gave phone out of date message in watch app. While the 6 was doing this nonsense again like other phones I paired the watch simultaneously to the iPhone 12 and stated the update and it worked , updated , synced etc.... I then unpaired it from the 12 and the watch then paired with all devices I own.

The issue is the App reporting the phone is out of date even on phones in date for the series of watch at the same period in time.

What is interesting about this thread is that Apple introduced the Series 2 less than 5 years ago, and people are now debating whether it is worthless or close to worthless.

Says something about the Apple Watch longevity. Much worse than Macs, iPhones, or iPads. Makes one reconsider spending too much on designer versions of what is soon to be a disposed device. I hope more recent versions have more staying power.

I haven't read all the replies, but I think series 3 would be the minimum to go for until you can afford a newer one or until it doesn't do all the things you want it to.

The website igotoffer.com will buy it from $25 - 41 ($80 for new). Retail $50 might be ok. But $35-45 would be better IMO. Regarding using it, I see no issues if you are not planning to run the latest software. I still use a series 3 and it does everything that I need it to. (track fitness, GPS, built-in apps/alerts) Upgrading the software is a pain on the "3" due to the small amount of storage. The "2" would have similar issues.
But for as a "trial" is see no issues using it. It would likely satisfy most of your basic needs.

It would be a good way to try out the watch and see if it’s worth buying a newer model later on. I kept my Series 2 after upgrading and still use it daily.

The battery in that thing is probably garbage and you'd have to spend at least $50 just to replace it.

I’ve had mine for almost 5 years and it still lasts me 2 days. I turn mine off at night as I don’t wear it to bed. I charge my watch way less by doing so!

The problem with an AW2 nowadays is that it gives only a very distorted - if not outright wrong - experience of what is possible with an AppleWatch and how it _can_ feel.

To get a serious and halfway-decent impression, I would also recommend an AW3 as minimum for a (proper) test drive. Those are coming sufficiently close to state-of-the-Art AW‘s and sacrifice on less relevant things (for a test drive), such as e.g. storage, screen size or always-on display. This advice stems from experience with AW0, AW2, AW3, AW4 and AW6.

Yes it’s fine. It’ll still do notifications on the wrist and Apple Pay, which are by far the two most valuable features on the Apple Watch. Who gives a rats arse about the fact it doesn’t support watch OS 7, I literally can’t tell the difference between that and the software my Apple Watch 3 shipped with back in 2017

A lot of people on this site have a vested interest in Apple and will persuade you that only the very latest and greatest will do, as that way apples profits and in turn the stock price are maximised

of course, that doesn’t mean to say that a new one isn’t better. But contrary to what some people on here will make out, a series 2 is a hell of a lot better than nothing and will still do most of what a new one does. If that is all you can afford, go for it and ignore the elitists as having a series 2 is infinitely better than not having an Apple Watch at all

Exactly this is why I think it is absolutely pointless to invest in anything other than the base aluminum models - sure, stainless steels and other have better durability, but at the end the watch will be completely obsolete before it actually breaks.

The biggest advantages of the Stainless variants imho are the sapphire Glas and the DLC coating.

Helps them stay looking good and helps with resale if you don’t wanna keep one until it breaks …

But then those variants take a much bigger hit on resale value than the aluminum ones do......I just have always gone back and forth and decided against it. Don't see the point.

I was an aluminum guy as well, but always loathed the inevitable scratches and dings on body and especially the glass.

When I got a serious chip on the glass of my AW3, I decided to go DLC and Sapphire and never looked back.

Yes, initial cost and value loss are higher, but I‘m perfectly fine in taking the hit. After all, every tech toy is losing value over time and the cost difference here is comparably small - unlike my satisfaction difference ;-)

Would you buy a Series 2 at this point?
I got a friend who look forward to upgrade to the upcoming Series 7, replacing his Series 2 aluminum. I was offered the Series 2 for really cheap. Minor chipping of the paint on the body, screen still good. What do you guys think?

I'm not that crazy over smarwatches, but at the same time I'm curious. However, Apple Watches prices are hugely inflated in my country (as you guys probably already know from me complaining about it). So buying even a brand new Series 3 imo is not worth it, let alone the SE or Series 6. This Series 2 might be a nice way for me to try that so-called "eco-system" without spending a lot of money :D

Downside, of course, Series 2 is already dropped from software support. It's not even supported with WatchOS 7. I'm not sure how significant between WatchOS6 and WatchOS7, but I don't think the Series 2 is well equipped to run many apps anyway. So I would probably mainly use the built-in features like notifications and health tracking.

Anyway, interested in your thoughts.
No, I wouldn’t.

100% no. The 33% bigger screen size alone that was introduced in the 3 or 4 would do it for me alone.

Introduced with the 4 series. And makes a notable difference. Though negligible for getting your feet wet with SmartWatches / AppleWatch.
