People troll based on subjectivity all the time, it’s actually almost always how people troll on forums like these. However, I’m not saying you’re doing that.
I’m intrigued that it’s about aesthetics as opposed to functionality and the common “lay the phone flat on a table” argument. Personally I actually find the stainless steel rim around the protruding camera lens on the X to look very elegant, and I’m happy it allows for what will be the best camera system ever on an iPhone. I know you’ve said you don’t care much for camera quality, but many do (and it’s the most popular camera in the world) and they kind of have to cater to the majority.
It’s likely that this bump will never go away, as the result of it going away would either be a thicker phone or an inferior camera system, neither of which Apple is likely to implement. Could you not just throw a nice leather case on the device and pretend the camera was flush?
To the OP’s question: I will absolutely be buying the larger X (or XI I suppose) in 2018.
I'm different than a lot of typical Apple users I believe. I only purchase what I like and I was never originally an Apple user. I only converted in 2003 (although I used Macs on the job).
I came to iPhone because I liked the design of the 5. But apparently the 5/5s was an anamoly along the way to greater plans Apple had.
I've already skipped two iPhones because of aesthetics so when it's next time to upgrade (early 2018) I'll be looking at a different manufacturer.
I have no issues with the design of the iPhone other than the camera bump. I hated the antenna lines, but Apple did remove those. The front of the new phones are beautiful and the backs as well, other than my one issue.
But it's a big enough issue for me.
People tend to lay their phones face down. I tend to lay mine back down. People want to protect their screens by doing this (so is the argument I have heard), but I tend to think that putting your phone face down subjects the screen to any dust or foreign particles that may be present. Over time that ends up scratching your screen. If something is going to scratch, I'd rather it be the back.
As to cases, yes I could do what you suggest and that is often the suggestion to me. But I don't use cases and starting to use one now to hide what I feel is a design flaw is only going to reinforce that with me.
We shall see what happens in the future and if I come back or not.
It's unfortunate now as Apple has not sold anything since 2006-2007, other than the iPhone 5 that I've wanted. Hence my stable of ancient Macs/iPhones.
