Would you buy the $599 MacBook, when/if it will be released?

No. I use an iPad Pro as my main laptop but I will freely admit it is missing many features that a true MacBook has, mainly because of iPadOS, and the software written for it.

I’ve used a M2 iPad Air and Magic Keyboard as my personal computer for nearly two years, but I’m ready to move back to a MacBook because iPadOS just can’t match macOS, try as they might. I also think iPadOS 26 is buggy. I was excited about a low-cost MacBook, but then I see the M4 MB Airs dropping to $750, and that seems like it would be the responsible choice.

Probably not.

My next Mac will in all likelihood be either the 14" "baby" MacBook Pro or the 15" MacBook Air, or their equivalents, whenever it's time to retire my M1 MacBook Air; either because it no longer does its job, or - just as likely - because I really, really want a new Mac... 😉
