I could give two craps about "thinner and lighter". People have their priorities screwed in the head. Honestly, people argue about .5 grams and .2 inches...come on. The bottom line is the next iPhone has to have a larger overall screen (not the stupid taller but still narrow body) and have a more flexible OS.

Also, people who ask for a better camera by way of increasing the MP don't know anything about photography.

Im beginning to think they may add some meaningful jailbreak abilities to iOS7. They know they lots their edge. They just need to implement it so even idiots can learn how to use it.

COMPLETELY redesigned iOS, bigger screen, more RAM, major camera improvements (NOT megapixels. I'm not an idiot). I don't foresee any of this happening, so I'm likely going to get something different for this upgrade. We'll see what the 6 or 6s has in store, I might be back. I loved my iphone, really...but dang. I wasn't really excited about the 4s when I got it. I didn't even look twice at the 5. The 5s? Yawn.

Too be honest, that will be extremely disappointing for me. I'd gladly buy it if it has either NFC chip or a larger 4.5~4.85-inch screen at least.

Features from iPhone 5:
iPhone 5 design
4-inch Retina display
LTE
1GB RAM
Lightning connector
Siri

New features:
Quad-core A7 chip
LTE world band
802.11ac Wi-Fi
13MP iSight camera
2MP FaceTime HD camera
iOS 7

Hopefully, at least half of what you mentioned will happen...

Somehow, I think Apple might continue to eschew NFC in favour of its own alternatives. They bothered to roll out passbook to all iphones from 3GS (and may want to position it as a mobile payment option). At the same time, introduce new features that replicate what NFC can do (such as shared photostream for sharing photos).

After all, isn't their back plate made of metal? Doesn't seem compatible with NFC?

iPhone 4/4S: Glass

iPhone 5: Aluminium and glass

No!!

If they don't come out with a bigger screen, no amount of advertising, loyalty, smoke and mirrors will save it from absolute anihilation by S4, HTC One, type phones. You can fool some of the people some of the time, but......

well, the new features seem no attract for me, but maybe the new iPhone 5s will be different.

No.

Add, 2GB of RAM and then maybe.

Add , 2GB RAM, USB 3.0 Lightning, Camera with OIS, H.265 Hardware Decoding and aptX Bluetooth and then Yes!

I might be in the minority, but I really do not want a bigger screen. It is the perfect size for me. I don't want to have to hold it with two hands, I don't want to have to wear regular jeans, I don't want to have my apps with black borders for 6 months. Big for bigs sake is ridiculous, just because everyone else wants a bigger screen. The only way I would be okay with a bigger screen is if they don't change the physical dimensions of the device, height and width wise, just get rid of some of the border. Not that I want it, it just wouldn't bother me as much.

I didnt fall for it when the 5 came out. And Ill be passing again when the assumed 5S comes out.
But I have been enjoying the 4.8 in. screen, the mini usb power, the removable battery, the customizable interfaces and the removable storage of the S3.
With the dismal thought of the 5S and whatever "ground shaking" "upgrade" that will come with, Ill be moving on to the S4 or that beautiful HTC One Aluminum, until Apple makes a wider phone. Looking forward to when THAT happens, then Ill be back. Cant wait!

Quad-core A7 chip - Duh
LTE world band - Duh
802.11ac Wi-Fi - Eh, not sure if ac will be widespread enough or ready for the 5S
13MP iSight camera - Improved camera I'm sure, but MP doesn't matter really
2MP FaceTime HD camera - See above
iOS 7 - Duh

Quad-core A7 chip - who cares? iPhone 5 is crazy fast. Quad core won't change the experience in any meaningful way.
LTE world band - not important to me, but I can see how it'd be a big deal to some
802.11ac Wi-Fi - nice... No big deal though.
13MP iSight camera - don't need more megapixels, just better low lights pictures.
2MP FaceTime HD camera - sure, why not
iOS 7 - iPhone 5 will get this too

So basically, it would need a lot more for me to upgrade from my 5. Nothing you listed would really improve my overall use and experience except iOS 7 (if it's good), and iPhone 5 will get that with all its features.

Fool people to buying iPhones? People actually buy iPhone because they like iOS, not segmented Android experience.

These were also my thoughts. Previous iterations of the iPhone I never felt were quite fast enough at loading apps, taking pics, etc... But my iPhone 5 doesn't lag at all and can pretty much handle whatever I throw at it (even jailbroken it flies). So, I'm really starting to feel that this 'S' for 'speed' model upgrades are becoming useless.

That is why I feel that Apple better have some surprises in store for this upcoming iPhone, just bumping the specs and adding a few more Siri capabilities will not be enough for many people. So far there have been no surprises during the Tim Cook era, we are due for one.

Come on Apple, blow us away with a completely new iPhone 6 with a larger (taller and WIDER) screen, NFC and more. Then keep selling the iPhone 5 for those who don't want a larger screen. Or start selling both the normal and the 's' versions of each model at the same time and make the 's' version have a larger screen. Then people have a choice between two new iPhones, the iPhone 6 with a 4" screen and a iPhone 6s with a 5" screen, other than screen size they would be identical. They do with with the macbook air, macbook pro, iMac, and iPad, why not iPhone as well?

Don't know. Only reason I got an iPhone 5 is because an upgrade was up and I had a family member who needed a smartphone. No sense in me giving them a shiny new toy, they got my old one (no charge to them)! I used my 4S until about January, and honestly don't notice any difference. At first the weight was quite noticeable, but I wouldn't call the 4S "heavy" by any means. At the end of the day it is going to depend on what new features iOS7 brings to the table and which of those features Apple decides to omit from the iPhone 5, if any. The 4S didn't miss out on any features at all (aside from small features that needed new hardware to implement). I was already happy with the camera on the 4S, just as happy on the 5. Front facing camera has been fine for the amount of chatting that we do. To make a longer story shorter, I am more interested in what iOS7 brings to the table than what new hardware comes to the phone.

Some actual hardware FEATURES that could get me more interested:
NFC (yes, I totally believe it can be useful and it will take Apple to get it going)
Wireless charging (already use this daily and love it. All arguments against it, for me, are FAR outweighed by the convenience of just setting my phone down at my desk and knowing that I will have all the juice needed for use throughtout the day when there is no powersource nearby).
