I'd just take your money. I don't need a new MacPro yet. Mine is fine for probably another 2 years. Can't wait to see what'll be around that corner! :D

No......Mainly because I don't need the processing power or customizability.

If you handed $4000 for Apple stuff, I'd get a 15" MBP with the 256GB SSD, maxed out RAM, processor, etc and a 24" display.

YES AND YES

LOL I WISH you were actually doing it ... ima gonna have to borrow 4k for a couple months to pay for the config ima gonna get (including stuff ima gonna buy 3rd party) im so happy i couldnt afford the prev gen till now :D lol ... hopefully ill be gettin that 4k interest free loan tonight then

2.93ghz x 2 + 16 gb ram (bought 3rd party ... so i dont have to wait 2-3 weeks for shipping its about same price that way) + 1tb hdd (and one additional bought 3rd party) + ATI Radeon + (some small stuff wireless/and wireless mouse and keyboard) under education discount :D

i dont see why anyones complainin about this gen all the stats are pretty good and gainestown is a big step forward in many ways

I think it would be overkill for me. I have the 2.66 Woodcrest mac pro, and it has served me very well. I just picked up two 2.66 GHz Clovertown processors for $300 and will upgrade to 8 cores. I'm :D

Lets say I was to hand everyone $4000 and said buy what ever you want! who would purchase the new mac pro?

I wouldn't! anyone else?

Second question Who would buy the new mac pro without the hand out?

Of course, I bought my 8 core system nearly a year ago knowing that computers get faster every year, generally cheaper/MIP, etc. I still have plenty of headroom for what I do with it. So, no, I wouldn't buy the current mac pro with the $4000. Of course, I might go ahead and bump up memory on my current system to 14 or 20GB :)

Same with cars. 1 year after I bought my car they started to support MP3 in the CD player. not worth trading in my car. A couple years later, provide an interface for MP3 players to be connected. Same issue.

Somebody's just gonna hand you 4 grand?

Yep.

I'm planning on buying a quad sometime this week.

Its exactly the system I wanted... I don't understand why everyone is complaining.

I sold my 1st gen stock Mac Pro and Dell 30" LCD for about C$ 3400 in Late Dec early Jan. I might pick up a stock Quad Machine and an LED Cinema Display early next month (with EDU discount). I definitely want to see some benchmarks though.

I love the Mac Pro case but I wish it was a little smaller. The Quad could have been in a smaller case with a single optical drive slot.

hand me no lol loan me no interest yea, hes a family friend + ima gonna be doin about 3k of work webdesignin for him lol he knows when i say ima gonna do somethin i will make sure i do it and also that i will pay him back as soon as i can ... prob 2-3 months and ill have him paid back

I'm planning on buying mine when I have the money for all the additional components I need (external RAID, Blackmagic) and maybe want (SSDs in RAID for boot.... Backed up, of course:D). Probably my biggest motivator is the dual 16X PCIe slots as compared to todays.... Fortunatly, I have the patience to wait for some benchmarks.

Psh! I skipped CD entirly! I have a tape-deck-adapter that goes from the tape drive to my MP3 player :D I perfer that over optical media :p

Excellent!

I have no choice but to buy it because my clients are switching to HD video and I'm still using my G4 that I bought back in 2002 if you can believe it. But I was really hoping for a Blu-lay burner in this release.

Now the question is:

When I buy this and next year they release one with a blu-ray burner that I so desperately will need, can I add it on then? And will it have software compatibility issues with let's say DVD Studio Pro or DVD Player?

While expensive, a good on-the-fly solution is to just buy a PC and add a blu-ray burner. Or you can mod one to shove it in the MacPro (I recall some users doing that...). These solutions are if you need it in the next month and cannot wait an entire year... And if you did shove it in the MacPro, you would probably have some issues with DVD Studio Pro. Probably. I don't know for sure.

I can. I used one up until last year for editing with MiniDV. Dropped a few frames here and there, but I think it was the old tapes. Worked like a charm, though :D

i would only buy the 8 core version. The quad core would be a downgrade for me no matter what Apple says on their website. Unfortunately, the 8 core is now pretty much too expensive for me at this time.

No.
Pathetic video card choice. Only 2 video cards ?
No pro video cards.
No updated ACDs to go with them.
Absurd standard memory.
No Blu-ray.
Totally disappointed.
Going to get a pro workstation from BOXX.

It still works like a charm for me. If it wasn't for the video standard change I could probably use it for work for many years to come. That's why I am amazed at Mac's durability. I can't imagine working on a PC for 7 years without having smashed it to pieces at some point. :)

Yes! I'm in....and I don't want a handout.

My dual 2.7 G5 is showing its age, but it is 4 years old....so I can't complain. I'm sure I can sell it for decent money along with my 23" ACD and pick up a new MP, ATi card and 24" LED.

BOXX rocks on the Windows side.... I had the pleasure of working with one for a short stint. But as I probably said before, I'm using Final Cut. True, I could use other editing software, but then that takes a learning curve that I don't have time for (curse film hobbies/full-time chem student).

However, "Pro Video Cards" basically is the 4870. Unlike the Windows cards, which use DirectX as compared to OpenGL, basically any video card would work just like their "Pro" varients, just less VRAM. Check my knowledge, I could be wrong.

"No Blue Ray", well, no blue ray from Apple. There are other blu-ray solutions.

In all, somebody else here said that the new MacPro seemed to be like a stopgap.... I'm thinking of agreeing with him/her. The BTO options are a little whacky with the nVidia 120 (a la 9500 GT, how does it compare to the 8800?).

It still works like a charm for me. If it wasn't for the video standard change I could probably use it for work for many years to come.

Ditto. Minus the fact that mine died a very explosive death when the PSU died. Ruined the rest of the hardware, and the room it was in smelt "interesting" for a few weeks. lol, power surge :p

Already placed an order on one with the following specs:

Two 2.26GHz Quad-Core (would like faster but too expensive), ATI Radeon HD 4870, stock 640GB HD, Two 18x SuperDrives, AirPort Extreme Wi-Fi Card, IWORK '09 PREINSTALLED, keyboard with num pad, wired mighty mouse, and an iPod dock.

This heap of recyclable metal cost me $4,894.26CAD, but it's a big upgrade from my two other systems a PowerBook G4 (final gen) and a P4 1.8 Ghz PC.

Placed an order today for 2.93 octo, 4870, wifi, apple care. So yes I would. Of course the only reason why I bought it was just to piss off the people that couldn't afford one.

Congratulations. Maybe I'm not thinking this through but I don't see the need for wireless Wi-Fi for a machine that's sitting in one place all the time.

Trying to reduce the number of cables and avoid drilling holes and threading cables through the walls, that's my reason.

Bleh. Yeah, playback of Blu-ray media is not supported, making it only good for data. That and the product page was a mess.

Personally, if I have to burn a Blu-Ray video disc and there's nothing from apple that works, then I'll have to do the final production on the PC side. And to answer your next question, yes, a totally different computer. My gaming ship could probably double as the final stage with a Blu-Ray burner or authoring drive, since someday I may sell the damn things (which I doubt).

ManukM, why do you need blueray media?

EDIT; "damn things" refer to HDCP Blu-Ray media.
