Apple does have the responsibility for making sure that the production of a luxury consumer good does not cost human lives. However, nobody has demonstrated that the suicide rate among the Foxconn employees is higher than anywhere else.

What we do know is that the working conditions at Foxconn are worse than in the West. Apple should be putting pressure on Foxconn to raise the conditions of the workers, and perhaps give consumers the option of paying a premium for a model of the iPhone that is made in a country with a better human rights record than the PRC.

Be still my bleeding heart!
I don't hear anyone complaining about the fact that China is STILL a communist country with VERY heavy restrictions on press and media, we don't hear about even a 1/4 of what goes on there. Foxconn is the very least of our worries.

This is weird. Let see who say will not buy the iPhone. Why don't so sell your current iPhone too.

Hi All,

I was wondering what others are thinking due to the news reports of Foxconn's serial sucides. For those who don't know, Foxconn is Apple's sole-source manufacture, manufacuring everything from iPhones to iPads to iMacs and Macbooks.

I just recently read about all this myself, but when I did, I'm horrified, and I can't get it out of my mind.

Engadget's article can be seen here http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/19/the-fate-of-a-generation-of-workers-foxconn-undercover-fully-tr/

I really wanted the new iPhone, too.

What are everyone's thoughts on this? Is this electronic greed taking people's lives?

diven talk ***** man!

anyway, have a look and see if you have any products made in india

China's society and labor laws are totally different than the western world.

it's more of a cultural issue than anything else. Until the chinese ppl decide to take their labor laws seriously, this stuff will continue to happen...

Anyone who answered Yes is a hypocrit.

And if you wear Jeans and other clothes, you too are a hypocrite.

I've purchased all my clothes at the Gap over the last few years and they have been accused over the years of using child slave labor. Hasn't stopped me from buying clothes. I am positive you too wear and own some questionable things.

It sucks for these people, but you can't really do anything about it. Apple won't worry if 10 people do not buy an iPhone because of this. Neither they do if it are 100, or 1000, or 10.000, or 100.000. Fact is, if they sell 9 million iPhones and 100.000 decide not to. Than they will still sell 8.9 million iPhones.

There are probably about a dozen things in the room where you are right now, which have been created under poor conditions.

This may sound ignorant, but: you should 'continue' with your life. Help people whenever you can, but don't blame yourself for something that happens on the other side of the world.

It's just like eating meat. We kill all these animals, but it's still a part of our nature because we need food. That's just the way things work, unfortunately.
