Everyone is a geek in their own right.
Depends really on any one person's definition of the term.
(Which really sounds geeky to say...but it's true.)

Would you consider someone in an extremely modified car that drives past you on your way to work to be geeky? Maybe not, but the truth is...Yes they are.
Most car dorks, like computer geeks (mac or pc)...have an absurd amount of love/care for their form of expression, and with that comes stupid amounts of knowledge for what they use to express themselves with.

I think I worded that correctly.
:D

Couldnt aggree more!

No pocket protector but the calculator is on hand most of the time... my wife routinely calls me a nerd, although I try to convince her I prefer "geek" as a label.

What I'd be interested in seeing is a breakdown of those who vehemently deny being a geek, and those who will admit it and their ages. I suspect that the younger crowd will probably be more in denial while those of us over 25 will more freely admit to the geek label.

I also would guess a strong correlation between the denial/admittance and relationship status single/coupled.

Right...but doesn't everyone being a geek (in their own right) make this a moot point?

Not really, the question is, "Do you consider yourself a geek?"

While gearheads may fit the previously mentioned definition of geek, how many of them would apply the label to themselves?

The sheer fact that many in this thread have denied being geeks (for whatever reason they perceive) shows that the question is valid.

Look at me I'm white and nerdy - great song - better than the original!

What is interesting is that the computer has become a household appliance. AND one we tinker with - upgrade, relate to and even post lame things (like my post here) on internet about. When was the last time anyone upgraded their fridge, dishwasher or TV. At some point u buy a newer model but thats not like putting in more RAM. When was the last time anyone put more power in their microwave?

I'm beginning to enjoy this forum :)

Right...but your taking my words out of context. The whole of what I said sums up to this...
Everyone's perception of the definition of the term "geek" will differ.
But ultimately, no matter how you choose to express yourself (whether you deny it or not) and your 'knowledge' in that prefered form of expression be it graphic design, cars, computers, acrylic paint, crayons, gardening, accounting, plumbing...etc. will ultimately make someone question their knowledge in that field. Essentially what I am trying to say is everyone will excell beyond limits that others may have in certain aspects of life. So be it, whatever form you choose to express yourself...but, Yes, everyone is a geek in their own right.

I would like to dabble in the afore mentioned age field/range of those that admit vs. those that deny being a geek.

...and yes I did throw crayons into the list, but c'mon, some people just aren't acclimated to coloring. :D

How does one know when they have attained 'geek' status? For example, my two biggest hobbies are video games and weightlifting. I love to read inside, but I also love to go hiking outdoors and take pictures. I spend a lot of time on the computer, but I also spend a lot of time at the gym getting in shape for my enlistment.

I don't know if I'm a geek. But if I am, I don't mind.

Im not a geek but I have tech knowledge. I would consider myself more of a gismo junky. I like the new gadgets that come out. They fascinate me but not to the point of consuming my life.

That's a good label. I would consider myself a tech-enthusiast fundamentalist.

When I'm on MR I'm usually listening to music etc. as well. At least that's my excuse.

If you're a member of a weightlifing forum, regularly post there, know the names of half the muscles in the human body, and correct newbies that get the names wrong;
- if you know the names of 10 food additives or ingredients that are good for body buiding that most people have never heard of,
- if you can name 5 of the amino acids that make a protein,
- if you have an opinion on which of the weight gain powders are better than which others,
- if you wish you could help your gym with choosing which new machine to buy or help with setting them up

- then yes you're a weight lifting geek. :)

geek vs nerd vs professor vs expert ???

So, is a geek someone who is heavily into computers or is it just a person with a lot of knowledge about a specific area (see title)
