On balance, I think I also would recomend the 17" iMac. But it sounds like it comes down to price (it always does for me, anyway).

But your story is very interesting to me, as I did exactly what you are proposing a year or so ago. I had an ancient PII running XP, 384mb of memory, not much disk: but I did have a decent monitor, etc. The solution was a mini (1.66Ghz Duo - the instore upgraded machines have 1Gb ram and a larger disk).

Considering that I use it for all sorts of high-ish end things (like running XP under parallels, Matlab codes with large data files, etc), it runs extremely well. Google Earth too.

As for waiting for upgrades, etc: I long ago stopped worry about such things, otherwise you'd never do anything!

Hope this helps your decision!

Get a 17" iMac if anything.

Any advise on where to get the best price for a mac in the New Orleans area?

he will be there just for a few days so ordering online is not an option. My brother is going along with him on the trip and may help him make the right :apple: or wrong  choice. :)

thanks

Apple store and ask for a "refreshed" units. These are returned units but have full warranty etc. You can't get a refurb from an apple store.

Hi,

I got our mac mini several weeks ago, and we love it. I would agree though to see if you can get it at a nice discounted price. We got our used one (shown below, minus the memory) for 375 with a keyboard and mouse, so the deals are definitely there. We just got a samsung 20" widescreen lcd for $200 (after rebates), so the setup is complete.

The great thing about the mac mini is definitely the size, as you can carry it anywhere, and that its so easy to customize with a screen of your choice. You can also upgrade the processor (and the hard drive, memory, wireless card, etc pretty easily). I'd say go for it, if you can get a nice deal on one. I also remember seeing apple refurbished ones for just above $500 also.

Good Luck!

The Mini is IMO going the same way as the G4 Cube.

For example, the low end iMac [...] costs £679

The following Mac Mini setup [...] costs £623

Canadian prices:
low-end Mac mini: 679.00$CAD
low-end iMac: 1,099.00$CAD

As you can see the price difference is quite huge over here, I have no idea how the prices end up being so close in the UK...

Like a lot others here, I would'nt recommand to buy a new mini as it's overprice. You can get a much better computer for the same price *BUT* if you can find (in the refurb or in 2rd hand) a mac mini core solo, you should jump on it and exchange later the CPU for a Core 2 Duo when the prices will be even lower than now.

That's what I did and I have now a better mini than the better mini that Apple sells today for cheaper ;)

my 2 cents
