I bet for 65% of the population it could but not for people who create content. For my mom, sister, nephew, neice, wife, both brother in laws it could easily do 99% of what they use a computer for. For any of my Blogging or tech geek buddies, no way.

Id say a majority of folks only use their computers for email, Facebook and surfing the web. Only a guess though.

Would you agree?

I hope to when the next ipad comes out but, yes there is always a but, I do have a mac mini. What I want to replace is my laptop, an original core duo macbook. With the ipad, and a decent vnc app, I'll use the ipad for all the goof off stuff and use vnc and the mini for handbrake/TVshows/audiobookbuilder/iphoto.

That is my hope. We'll see in a couple months.

I think I could replace my MacBook with it as long as I still had my Mac Pro. The iPad can't do everything that the Macs can do or at least not as quickly or as well but it is a very functional time saver. I have created documents, spreadsheets and such on it but more just to see if I could do it.

While I have a keyboard for it, I'd rather not have to carry a bunch of peripherals for it. One of its biggest advantages is the lightweight ease of carry.

I just need a USB port and a display out (VGA) option that works all the time with all apps (and doesn't require jail breaking).

An integrated file management system would be a bonus.

No, as to put it simply the iPad does not run the programs I want to use 99% of the time.

No--I'm not ready for that yet--but I do think I will get a laptop of some sort next instead of a new iMac--maybe even a Macbook Air.

It's designed to be an extension of a computer, not replace one. That's why it needs to dock/sync.

I pretty much did I think I've touched my desktop twice since I got my iPad.

Not Yet

Using an iPad to be productive just doesn't have the meat on the bone. Since the iPad will not let you store files on the device (yes, you can email them to yourself), and the distaste it has for Flash, and the fact that you can't DL anything "foriegn" like a citrix plug-in, there would be NWIH I could live with just an iPad. If I did, I would never read my hospital email, and I would never see my website again.:apple:

I'm currently using a rev. A MacBook as my primary computer, my wife has a new iMac upstairs that I rarely use, but my thought is that I could retire the MacBook and get an iPad when the new version comes out. I think it can realistically "do" everything I use my laptop for frequently, and I'd still have the laptop for the specific tasks that require a "real" computer (I datalog the ECU in my race car, for example).

The wrench in the works for me is the new 11" MBA. For the cost difference, I get a full OS, bigger screen, camera, bigger HD, etc. I'm also used to sitting on the couch with the laptop on my knee, and every time I play with an iPad I just can't picture being as comfortable using it while sitting (especially typing). I'm really on the fence, and if the next iPad/iOS doesn't really have some surprise features, I think I'll swing toward an MBA.

I do believe that eventually, the iPad/tablet will effectively replace laptops for most people, but I think they need to mature a bit.

I am looking forward to the day I get an iPad. I have an old iMac, which is necessary for iTunes, photos, and files. But the reality is, I do almost all of my web browsing and emailing, Facebook, games, etc on my iPhone. I want an iPad to replace my iPhone as my mobile web device.

Fingers crossed for more storage and the ability to transfer full-resolution images. Then the iMac would be even LESS important.

Absolutely not.

The iPad is a fun device and all. But when it comes to doing serious work, it is just a play thing.

Absolutely not. My iPad is an extension of my Macbook Pro with my Evo. There's just too many tasks that I need to do on a real computer that I can't on an iPad. For instance, I need Excel, PowerPoint, and especially Outlook to run ny business. There's no way I can effectively and efficiently do on an iPad.

IPad is ok to take to coffee shops or to surf the web or read the news in bed but to replace a notebook.. I don't think so.

No because then id have nothing to sync with and justbjust stupid.

How would you plan on updating your iPad?

Bring it to the Apple store. But seriously, who doesn't have at least an inexpensive desktop or laptop?

Free Citrix app maybe??? From the App Store. I store files on my device.
Distaste for Flash is a BONUS. If you designed a flash heavy website, you just left out 10s of millions of people, to include not just iOS, but Windows Mobile, Andriod (pre 2.1, which is still being sold), and those of us that did away with Flash on our Windows/OSX machines. Hey, this is 2011, not 2001, get with the times

I tried it for a week while my MacBook Pro was at Apple getting a new battery...
No thanks! I found myself extremely limited, especially while web browsing, as I use a lot of flash based sites. I also found the spelling correction on pages both extremely helpful and annoying, so I couldn't turn it off.
All in all, I like using my MBP for Lecture Notes quite a lot more, and the iPad is not going to replace it anytime soon.

If your computing needs were limited to surfing the web, lightweight email and you never had to send/receive "real world" application attachments....maybe you could get by with an iPad and keyboard. Otherwise, its a secondary computing device, not your primary.
