after all the threads about light bleeds and other physical faults with the 3g iphone, i took mine out of my incase case today for a closer inspection. and not only does mine have clear light bleeding on the left side where the glass meets the plastic, but look what else i noticed.

the glass towards the top of the phone actually sticks out of the body! the bottom is perfect, the glass on top is completely flat with the casing, but the top, especially top right sticks out close to a millimeter.

now i'm curious, imagine you had just found these physical faults with your 3g iphone, would they warrant going back to apple for an exchange?

here's some pics...you can see the second pic shows the bottom, and its fine, glass is flat, but the other 3 pics showing the top right demonstrates how much the glass sticks out.

same here, i'm not weird about things being perfect but c'mon, when we pay $2-300 we should get nothing less than a perfect product.

problem is i won't be back in the states till another 2-3 weeks (i'm in the UK now) so i don't know if apple will exchange it after the 14 days return policy, anyone know the rules on returns past the 14 days?

I returned mine for light leak. So, yeah, I would definitely return yours with the mixture of other problems it has.

I Have exactly the same problem as you do. I probably wont return it, but it's because we don't got applestores in my country. And my operator would probably laugh at me if I would ask for a new one because of that :p Haha, call me a coward :). I'm getting over it :D

I had that exact same fault with my first 2 exchanges (white 16GB) and they were both exchanged in store in the same visit....number 3's fit and finish are perfect but now I think I have negative blacks again!

Unless it's just the angle of the photo it looks like your sleep/wake switch is crooked too.

Yeah, return it. The sleep wake button does look slanted.

If it takes close inspection then no, I wouldn't bother. It's unique, love it :)

If the light bleed is really bad and bothers you then return it. Just bear in mind that you might get a replacement that has technical defects, not just cosmetic ones :)

I would return it because it may be an indicator that there will be a problem with that area.

Of course you could keep it until there is a problem. As long as it is under warranty, you would be okay I would think.

It's PROTRUDING not PERTRUDING. And no, I personally would not return it.

You hear about other people having cosmetic problems like light bleed, so you, not having noticed anything wrong with your phone up to this point, meticulously inspect it for problems, even though up to that point you were perfectly fine with it, and discover these GLARING IMPERFECTIONS that threaten to DESTROY THE VALUE AND ENJOYMENT OF YOUR PHONE...

Why not just not look for imperfections? It would save you a lot of aggravation.

good to know, personally i think $300 and a total of around $2000 for the 2 year service isn't chump change, so if you are ok with a product with shortcomings in its build quality that's fine, but i'd rather get what i pay for.

    yup it is.

but i wouldn't even mention that, it's more the glass sticking out that worries me.

Should fall under AppleCare, not exchange policy.

My glass also sticks out a little on the top, but my sleep button is perfect. Since the glass issue doesn't affect the performance of the phone I'm not going to exchange it. The seal between the glass and the bezel is tight and in good shape. Other than a few minor aesthetic blemishes the phone functions perfectly. Now if I had a negative black issue or dead pixels, that would be a different storry.

Good luck finding happiness in perfection, keep looking and you'll always find something wrong.

Agreed. The next one will have a slight imperfection as well. It's an endless cycle. There is no such thing as a perfect man made phone, I'm sorry.

Does it bother you: Yes or no?

    If so, take it back.

    If not, who cares?

The light leak would bother the hell out of me. I may not rush to the store to swap it out, but if I found myself around one I'd talk to them about it. It's a manufacturing issue and should be covered on your 1 year AppleCare plan so you'll be set.

I had the same thing, also bad finishing on the black backing, it stuck out from the sides.

Made an appointment at the genius bar at Regent Street, London. Swapped it over, completely pleasant experience, I was not made to feel like an annoying customer.

So yes if it bothers you exchange it and do it at an Apple Store if you can because they're great there!

    Tom.

PS: my new one is just about perfect except for a bit of glue between the bottom left chrome corner and black back, doesn't bother me though.

I would take it back and then check the replacement in the shop for any defects. Obviously nothing is perfect, but for that price it should be.

The main questions are: does this annoy you at all; does it warrant spending a few hours going to the Apple store; and will you look obnoxiously picky explaining the problem to the Apple geniuses?

If you can answer those questions in a yes, yes, and no order, then it should be brought in. But if I were in your shoes, I would have answered those in a no, no, yes order.

I think that you are being a little bit too picky with your device here. But if the glass were moving more and more out every day, then I think that you would have and excuse to bring it in.

I don't think you'll look picky - Apple products have an expectation of high quality. Think of it this way - if you were pitching it to Steve, would he complain about the build quality?

    Absolutely.
