Wouldn't this be a nice looking iPhone 5?

I do not like it.
I think the iPhone 4 looks better. And I don't see the point of a capacitive home button. I generally unlock my phone by pressing the home button, which I assume won't work on a capacitive one.
If the top looked the same as iPhone 4, there was no capacitive home button, and the back was fully aluminum, then I'd probably like it.

Ooo, good call. Didn't even notice the lack of an actual Home button.
Move me to the "Dislike" category.
I didn't notice the capacitive home button either, however, besides that one thing, I think the phone is still great looking!
I won't hold my breathe for a notification LED.
I'm not really digging this design... I'd rather keep the current design and just bump the specs.
I agree, besides it's time for the mechanical button to go. Give us touch sensitive.
The image is a screen grab from the web. I don't care for the white, it would be best in Black.
Overall, other than those details it's just fine.
Oh, that's what the green light was. I wouldn't have an issue with a notification LED, but I don't like the placement in your prospective picture.
Also, lack of a home button is not a winner in my book. I'm not saying it can't be done, but you're not doing it right.
ETA: to answer your post, I don't think it'd be good looking at all. I'd be thankful that I couldn't upgrade until 2012 if that came out.

New Iphone 5?
This would be the best look for the new great number 5, notice the green light towards top, looks like indicator light, this very well could be a real' look at whats coming........I love it........chrome bezel/yes, aluminum rounded back/yes, new indicator light/yes, 4"screen/yes, NFC capabilities/yes, among others/yes!!!! : )

I think its time Apple brings their unibody technology from their Macbook lines to the iPhone don't you think?
While they are at it, make the Apple logo on the back of the iPhone light up! (Of course with an option to turn it off?)
Nice mock-up! it looks really good, i like the centered camera.

And honestly, put an iphone 4 (without a case) next to a macbook pro, it already looks like it's designed to fit with the MBP lines.
