Sorry if this has been discussed before, but is there a reason Maps voice directions can't be sent via Bluetooth? Many of us have Bluetooth integrations in our cars, and other routing apps (such as Waze) can send voice directions that way. It makes it incredibly convenient, as we can continue to listen to the radio or whatever, without having to worry about volume of the stereo vs. that of the phone. Am I just missing a setting somewhere?

They could have released their new maps as a standalone beta product while leaving Google's maps in the main app and in the Map Kits.

While not as many people would have used it as they are now, they wouldn't have pissed off the masses, had to publicly apologize, or endured the onslaught of negative press. Not to mention, those who would have used it would have been far more understanding and eager to fix and update the maps.

How long does it take Apple to fix something? Dropped a pin last week to move a business a block down to the right location in Greenwich Village NYC, still not fixed yet.

Should be GTG by iOS 9. The good thing is you know where it is, which makes you have the edge. If nobody travels and stays where they are, around what is familiar to them, maybe iOS 8.

Google is the only party that has mapping data? Not true. Parties that own mapping data include Bing and Nokia (as you point out), but also Navigon, Magellan, and Garmin, plus a slew of other entities like Waze, MotionX, and Telnav. Then there is TomTom, whose stand-alone app works very well. So Apple must be butchering TomTom's data somehow. So, yes, Apple is reinventing the wheel. With the money they have they could either buy this data outright or at least license it. They may have to do this until they get their stuff together.

Where did I say mapping data? If it wasn't clear enough, I meant that Google has the best data source for POI's.

I didn't think this was a bit deal until I tried to use it on a drive to Maryland from NJ yesterday. Was pretty terrible. i have upcoming travel plans and the lack of public transit data is going to be a PITA as well. But hey i can always downgrade to IOS5 right...nope. Maybe Apple really wants me to go get a Samsung.

guy in my work just came in and started ranting about apples maps. "my house is just a big cloud wtf?!!"

"went to use streetview yesterday to check parking but no streetview, do you have streetview on yours? (android)"

"oh yes" i say - very smug :)

"cant even get streetview on the web page, they have a year to run they should never have done this its shocking"

me: :) (very smug)

p.s this is the iphone guy who said i should be buying an iphone and he didnt even know what widgets were  didnt know android has had voice to text and turn by turn directions for nearly 3 years.

I was talking about getting a nexus 7 and he just drones on about the ipad. I hope he shuts up now.

Yes, we all know android had better maps for years, because the 'do no evil' Google refused to update iOS maps!
So why are you indignant that Apple decided to do something about it?

You must be missing something as it announces TBT via Bluetooth in my Mazda and Ford just fine. Wish I could help on troubleshooting but I am not aware of anything special to do in order to get it to work.

Yes, it's perfectly reasonable to have to wait a year for maps that are comparable (if we're lucky) to the ones we had just a few weeks ago.

No, but it's the reality when dealing with 3rd party data. Apple can't just "fix" their dataset in the live database. They first have to find the source of the mistake (is the source data wrong ? Is their conversion of that source data wrong ? Is there a front-end bug that's miss interpreting the geolocation data ? ) then they have to fix that source directly (either by sending the report upstream to the data provider or by fixing their conversion routines or by fixing their app bug).

If they just move things around in the final dataset, any future merges of updates from their providers could squash the updates and bring you back to square 1. You obviously don't want that.

This is going to make going over each report, no matter how trivial, quite an affair. This is going to take time. Now guess why Google is trying to move more and more of their mapping data collection in-house. It's to basically streamline this process and remove data format conversions and waiting on 3rd parties to fix mistakes in datasets.

Another day in an unfamiliar town and another POI that a friend suggested, The Cottage in La Jolla, CA for Breakfast. Basically a "Hole in the Wall" place but I was able to find it using Apple's Maps App. Try the the French Toast and the Eggs Benedict.

Compared to a classic Nokia mobile phone, the iPhone doesn't even come close in call quality... and comparing to all the other things the iPhone does very well it's still the weakest function. Sorry if you feel offended by that...

So why aren't you carrying a classic Nokia mobile phone?

Why have a beta version in a major product release?

Google has been doing that as long as they've been in business.

So the day I updated to iOS 6, I thought to myself "why all the complaints? The new maps are great. I can go to 3D view and actually be there"...

Then I tried ordering a pizza at a local chain that had multiple locations. The one that used to be located near my house has been closed for approximately 6 months. This was updated on the Google Maps immediately, never making me accidently call the wrong location.

Foolishly, being used to Google Maps' constant updates, I searched for the pizza shop and instinctively went to the first location. Little did I know, it was the one miles away. They still had the one listed near my house that closed, and the number they used to have got taken over by a location a distance away.

Long story short? This lazy guy had to drive 5 miles instead of .3 to pick up the pizza. Boo-hoo eh? I miss my Google Maps.

Given two products, one that needs improvement and one that works, you honestly think the the public would spend time reporting issues when they could just use the existing framework? It would become a newsstand - shoved to the last page along with the other apps you don't use.

I know Apple is just getting into the "maps" game, but this is unlike them completely. They usually have everything they release polished and good to go. But no, their maps app looks like a side project they wanted to throw in for iPhone 5. I know it will take many years to even get close to Google but I think it was rushed for no reason and they still had a year left on their Google contract. Why not take that year to make it usable?

You know something is really bad when the CEO of the company has to release and apology for how horrible their app is AND list alternatives. I don't blame them for doing so but how could they not have seen this coming?
