Of course google charges apple for its maps. It charges anyone who makes over 25k api calls per day. Apple must make millions of gmaps api calls per day.http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-15523050

Just because they charge others does not mean they charge Apple. The Apple mapping on iOS provides an enormous amount of search advertising revenue, much more than many other uses would.

Won't Google Maps be available as an App in the App Store anyway? Or you can just save a safari link to it. I also don't think Apple can match Google Maps anytime soon. But I also don't think I will be forced to use Apple Map if I don't want to (though it will be a default choice and it will probably be fine for lots of purposes).

Yelp has 100MM listings which is what apple is using. Does anyone know how many google currentl has on their maps?

Also do you think that apple will allow a google maps app?

I'm not talking about software issues. There are fundamental data errors that will take years to fix. There is a difference between software coding and data. And yes I have reported it to apple.

Dude please save your energy, the people arguing clearly haven't read any of the many pages of this thread, nor understand the actual situation.

They charge Apple.

Apple would've paid Tele Atlas (TomTom) a phenomenal amount for world wide mapping.

They're not going to do that unless they thing they're going to make more money than continuing with google. Apple are like any other business in that they are doing it for the money. Shareholders demand that.

I can't understand why so many are griping about map detail! TomTom, Garmin and just about all GPS manufacturers license their map data from outside entities ..what's to stop Apple doing the same? Also, C3 mapped landscapes for smart missile technologies ...do you really believe they got the detail so badly wrong and still managed to win government backing?

I think those bemoaning the Apple Maps app already are jumping the gun. Apple have a long tradition of playing their cards as close to their chest as possible, for as long as they can get away with it.

Wait for a later Beta to see what's really capable.

Guys come on, how can anyone side Apple on this one.

Just simply imagine Flyover as a replacement for streetview. Its ridiculous! I am sure most if not all of us have been saved by Google's streetview once or twice before.

Actually TomTom don't. They own Tele atlas. It's Tele atlas data in apple maps.

I'm sure C3 did a great job with missile guidance systems.

But you know, how a missile hits a target from the sky and how I drive to my local store along the street are really quite different. Unless of course, Apple imagines most of us fly to our destinations..... or move around like Spiderman.

Maps is being billed as THE major feature of iOS 6 and right now I don't see it living up to the hype. I totally get that Apple has a huge challenge instantly catching up to what Google has been able to do in 6+ years of mapping, but that doesn't change the fact that nearly ever single one of the hundreds of millions of iOS users actually USE mapping daily on their devices and so a downgrade will be noticed and felt in a huge, huge way.

I had hoped that the actual mapping cartography would be more beautiful and in this manner it is a mixed bag. It certainly appears "cleaner" in the screen shots and the vector graphics with the ability to spin the map is great but when scaled to the same size it is clear that google maps shows more information and shows meaning in a clearer way. i can tell what the major roads are, what neighborhoods are, landmarks etc. very easily details that apple maps seem to either leave out or only show when zoomed in to a very close, close scale. the loss of street view i knew was coming but the 3D flyover is in no way a fix for it, in particular since only a handful of cities are actually modeled right now and even if the rumor of "100 cities modeled" in the near future is true you can bet it still doesn't help us suburbanites or rural dwellers while street view had almost it all.

It also appears satellite data, at least today, is either missing or older/less detailed that what google is offering. I am confident it will get better but within 3 months? There are also numerous reports of inaccurate road placement, missing roads, areas where road data is 5+ years out of date etc., while google always seems to have it right for me.

I am not a mass transit user but millions are. apple's lack of transit directions in this first version will be a huge, huge loss for many iOS users vs. what the current mapping solution offers.

the turn by turn is great, glad to finally see it, but since it only works on the 4S and future iPhone you have to wonder if the losses in the core mapping features, actual readability, transit directions, street view, satellite image freshness, and basic road accuracy is worth it when many iOS users won't even have the feature?

i am sure it will get better over the next couple of years and likely will catch up with google in the deficiency areas, but what a painful time it will be.

Does going to maps.google.com work on Safari on the iPad then? Can you use the maps there?

yes it does, it even will use iPhone and iPad location for the maps in Safari. it is not as quick and seamless and the native app however, but it will work.

Is this meant to be a serious response?

...and whats with the constant anti-apple rhetoric, are you trying to whip up a protest group? at least wait for the final release before you start waving placards.

That is all.

I worry how long Apple's maps will be 'beta'. Siri has been 'beta' for too long IMO. It is a main facet of most iPhone advertisements just like maps is frequently touted about with iOS 6.

Apple has already *repeatedly* said that they want to attack Google irrespective of profitability. Jobs said he would spend "every penny of Apple's $40 billion" to "destroy Android".

Shareholders are not going to look at a specific decision: overall Apple is extremely profitable, and until it isn't they won't demand anything.

I've never seen a GPS that's a patch on Google Maps.

Hahaha. Hahahahaha.

You're kidding right? Given the track record of US smart missiles hitting the wrong target?

Same nonsense we heard with Siri. Stayed junk.

Go away...

"I'm a developer, and..."

Sure you are. What you meant to say was, "I paid 99 bucks, and while goofing around with this software..."

This I agree with.

Apple isn't going to preview the full complete functionality of their maps when the OS is still months away from prime time. If you REALLY think Apple will release a product that is a DOWNGRADE from the previous counterpart, you don't know Apple.

You can bet they are working around the clock to improve Maps. It WILL be as good if not better then Google's. Even if it's out of spite and takes half of Apple's resources.

...
C3 is Swedish and the same company that provided Nokia's maps before Apple bought them out. :p

See the link for an example of Nokia maps' level of detail >Nokia Maps<

there are some really ignorant & idiotic responses to any logical suggestion that Apple MAY do well with its Maps app. What gives ..Trolls?

I am certain the final product of Apple maps will be as polished as every other apple release.

But Sir, you must be in self denial to think that Apple will be providing a substantial alternative to streetview in the final release. MAJOR self denial. haha

no self denial here, more a 'wait & see' attitude.

You, on the other hand, are trying your hardest to convince others to throw the gallows lever now! I think you're about ready to adopt an Android device. (..haha)

Youtube Video of how it's done

The second article agrees with me.

The first article sources the second. I just posted link to the second invade you missed it.

Actually the second proves you wrong. Here's a quote from it:

"And mobile numbers will include not just Android but also the similar deal that Google has with Apple to provide search, Maps and so on"

Even as an Apple fan, I have to agree with this. Hopefully they add some street view replacement or integrate it in.

quick question when IOS6 drop in the fall do the people that stay on ios5 google map stop working or what? I am so glad i did not upgrade to the 4s(have the iphone4 now) now i can use my upgrade for the nexus

If you stay on 5, you keep google maps, at least that's what's being said for now. Guess it's a wait and see.

Edit: In the Beta notes it says "earlier iOS releases will continue to use Googles service"

...because Apple loves to give its competitors a leg up on Apple devices. They're cool like that.

<sarcasm>

Seriously, Apple maps may be cool in 5 years, but I'm afraid it'll be devoid of so many features we are used to with Google maps that it'll only be a big let down.
