I don't care about where you live or where you go. That's why I said on a worldwide level... in which case accuracy isn't subjective, Google has it.

The facts.
It doesn't matter how much or how little of a head start Google or any other mapping company has over Apple.
Apple was fast on rushing the maps application, took away working maps, and replaced them with their own subpar offering.
Apple DOES force people to use their maps as one can not choose another as their default for Safari or Siri, numerous 3rd party apps, location reminders or Find my Friends/ Phone.

Here it is, 6 months later, and my phone still doesn't even know where my house (or anyone in my community) are.
Google doesn't have accurate POI's in my area. So yes subjective (Google what it means ).

Apparently you don't know how to click other apps that aren't stock Apple made apps, huh?
It does matter how long a company has been working at a project. Silly guy.
Any who. I don't want to argue. You have bias against Apple I know you do. They are every online taught tech experts scapegoat. Good luck in staying mad at a company

Sure, blame me because you can't comprehend what a worldwide level comparison means or that there aren't any other apps to do what I request.

"Siri, remind me when I get home to ...."
Please tell me what app I can click that will do that for me...becuase, thanks to the new maps, that doesn't.

Here's the lovely Bosphorus Bridge seen from Apple Maps.

And your point is?

Bosphorus is not a 3D city. That is a common graphic display of a manmade structure being shown with a 3D terrain overlay...the same thing happens with Google Maps in similar situations.

By the way...don't try to drive to Bosphorus with Google Maps or you might end up a little wet. Where are the thousands of threads complaining about this?

I agree iOS Maps aren't that good at road coverage when it gets to outside of 'rich countries', that there are black and white satellite photos, shop icons on wrong places (I hope that Apple will unbind from Yelp and make their own review service) and that the search algorithm isn't that good.

But when it gets to 3D imagery, Apple flyover provides the best 3D city imagery. By comparing it yourself it will look obvious who takes the crown.

But the thing is that it is better to have 2 alternatives rather than just one. iOS Maps covers has cities that Google doesn't, and vice versa. Which in fact - great. I can check biggest cities in Switzerland in Google Earth, and I can check most of the biggest cities in US in iOS Maps. List of 3D cities in Google Earth and in iOS Maps.

It is clear that the optimal option is to go with iOS where you get both, instead of just 1.

Forget Nokia's Ovi Maps, they licensed their 3D cities from C3 Technologies, which Apple acquired after. They didn't have any But if you want to explore Europe's big cities that Apple Maps nor Google Earth doesn't provide then check it out.

Apple just updated Maps in Japan today. No software update is required, as it's all automatic.

http://9to5mac.com/2013/03/11/apple-releases-enhancements-to-maps-in-japan-without-6-1-3-update/

They have, you are right. Still no building names and most things are missing as before. Still some improvement better than none. Sadly apple maps is still fairly useless here. I guess it'll take some time (years).

Oh and they added some extra map symbols too.

Before the rumors start about Japan, those are symbols for buddhist temples.

Lol, nice. Although living here might make you wonder sometimes.

There where I live (Sweden)

Satellite image:
Apple
Google
Doesn't need a comment, obvious who wins this one.

University where 12k+ students studies:
Apple
Google
Google's stretches the university boarder too far, includes the buildings that don't belong to university and misallocates big bus station (isn't shows) Apple's shows too little details, unlike Google's.

Gas stations search:
Apple (It really fails to find any station and points just to repair services)
Google (Only one gas station company shown. That isn't search, that is promotion!)

Police station search :
Apple
Google
Both fails to find a police station. Google one points to some shops that arent related to police at all. Apple one points me to the nearest city's police station (20 km), which gets a tiny plus.

Both have a lot of flaws there where I live. I don't see any complains when Google Maps does a bad job, but when Apple Maps does a bad job, it hits a first page. Overreaction without a doubt. I hope that they will acquire more satellite images. I don't know if they already done that and just working on placing them, but I hope they will fix it soon.

Most annoying part is that some of most important things aren't mapped (police and gas stations). Google maps uses it maps to promote gas stations rather than show nearest one, which is very disappointing. It made me see what Google really stands for - advertising. It makes us think that it does good by making things available for free, and doesn't mention that if you search for a place, it shows the ones that pays Google. I hope that Apple will unbind from Yelp and start putting all (by all I mean all, unlike Google) places on their maps. Because money-oriented maps isn't what most of us want.

Flyover was significantly expanded in Toronto today.

My apartment is finally in 3D, and before today, Flyover didn't come anywhere near it.

I'm an Android guy, but the other day whilst driving from South London to Nottingham, my mate used apple maps to navigate us there.

Around Peterborough, apple maps decided to take us off the motorway (obviously we thought it might have some quicker alternative route), drive through a town, re-enter the motorway on the other direction, then come off at a junction + re-enter on the other side (so as we were then) and go through the town again.

Stuck in a loop. Bizzare.

I think that flyover is sometimes very useful, when people don't know where you live and you send them a screenshot of your building in 3D.

I'll keep that in mind the next time my friends decide to fly a helicopter to visit me. In the meantime, I'll continue using Google's Street View.

Here is an example of a no-brainer explanation where to turn and how it looks with 1 picture. The route can also be marked if you write in address and navigate there, but I was lazy and done it in a paint lol.
Now show me the way Street view does it better. Don't tell me that with the satellite image it would be the same thing, 3D view looks more natural than Satellite view and you remember it better, unless you travel helicopter.
P.S.: It isn't my home, and I chose a random address.

Apple has my home address wrong. Even though I've reported it repeatedly, called their support lines, and everything else I can think of, my home (and roughly 100 of my neighbors) shows up at some random point in the middle of the woods a few hundred yards away from anything.

Since I don't live in a major city, there is no Flyover.

With Streetview, I could easily show someone what the front of my house looks like (not that it'd be needed since Google actually knew my address).

Even in cities, not every door is properly marked. When a building has multiple entrances, Streetview easily let's someone know which is the right one.

The thing is that I said 'Flyover can be sometimes very useful', I was saying about Flyover itself, not about the maps in overall. Anyway...
I agree that the overall maps aren't as good as Google maps at the moment of speaking. There where I live, they have black and white satellite view, and messed up POIs which annoys me. I hope they will fix those things in a short term, since Google maps need a competition, because it seems that they use their maps to promote certain companies here in Sweden, which annoys me also.

I see that Apple is now hiring loads of people to check and correct map accuracy and mapping data. This all seems a bit cart before the horse to me. They have obviously decided to take the Lotus (Lots Of Trouble, Usually Serious) cars approach to development and testing, allowing your customers to be the test drivers and only once you know all the problems, hiring people to put it right.

I agree... the 3D view looks alot more natural. Much better than street view.

The apple maps in Japan are continuously improving. You can see the symbol of restaurant, bank , and cafe (such as McDonald, Starbucks, KFC) on the maps. Just search any places in Japan, you will see the change. I hope Apple can continuously improve the maps around the world. Apple really need to improve the maps around the world to the level same as the improvement of Maps in Japan.

This is where I believe Apple is going with navigation...100% 3D with their C3 Technologies view versus the building view that currently shows up in 3D cities.

More natural and would explain why they are removing almost all cars from the streets to make the navigation as clear as possible.
