Im in NY maps isnt that bad. Some spots arent clear and the graphics are off but turn by turn navi works flawlessly.

Not used them yet myself, just read lots of reviews.

http://gizmodo.com/5918176/google-maps-vs-apple-maps-a-side-by-side-comparison

"devoid of useful information" - I've seen hundreds of comments like this in reviews of Apple Maps.

Not that I care, I won't use them on my iPad and I have an Android phone.

The roads are there yeah, they're just missing names!!

I've never used Android myself, but read lots of Android reviews on MacRumors.

"Laggy and unstable"- I've seen hundreds of comments like this in reviews of Android.

Hard to rate something that you've never used...just saying.

(Note: I am not knocking Android, just making a point about judgements made from others opinions)

Sure it's all Apple's fault?

I've been unhappy with Google's map app on iOS and for the last two years have been using MapQuest for free turn-by-turn. It's my go to map app. I only use the built in Apple/Google on for mass transit, which still isn't always accurate.

Are you sure this was all Apple's decision, give the patent lawsuits between the two companies? The drop came shortly after the verdict. Google may have declined to renew the contract, asked for an outrageous amount, or demanded cross licensing of patents to continue the contract.

I have no way of knowing, but it is suspicious.

Apple's map will be great, will improve or will be a bomb. If it's not good enough, I'll still be using MapQuest in the US and maps.google.com for mass transit, which really doesn't need constant updating anyway.

Why not also assume that apple didnt want to renew google maps contract ? Or do you think that they just said "fck it lets just make our own maps and stick it to google" ?

Did the Lawsuit kill Map?

It's just interesting that Youtube was there until late betas which also seemed to coincide with the lawsuit.

It could have been either side, I'm just guessing the lawsuit soured relations more than people think.

I think the removal of all Google integration was long coming...not a big surprise...and the YouTube app sucked anyway.

Having used iOS 6's maps since beta 1, I find them to be very usable. Sure, the lack of things like transit directions makes for an adjustment, but the general usability of them is very good. I've used the nav capabilities as a primary nav system in the Washington DC area from the beginning, as an experiment, and I've only had a couple occasions out of hundreds that the new Apple maps have given me screwy information. I really hope they put the transit directions back that google had, but overall, I like the simplicity of the new implementation better, and [most of] the needed data is there. Since its not even first generation yet, I can only assume it will get even better...

It took google 3 years to perfect google maps, this is apples first few months. Give it time, and if you want a far comparison, then go look for the google maps beta and compare it with the first release of apple maps

Recent lawsuit had nothing to do with google mate, reasons why? Well apple contract was over and there was no need of "stock" youtube, same as Maps i guess they know google is going to offer the apps on the store so why bother having the youtube app also.

Anyway i think whe always look for the darker scenario.

Point taken. There's a slight difference in people on this website complaining about Apple Maps and reading reviews about Android on here though ;)

im going to get really p1ssed if people keep giving apple the benefit of the doubt if they say "beta"

it's not beta when they release the program to the public!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

then apple should of waited 3 years before releasing their own map program.

it's clearly spiteful.

f u apple.

Maps in iOS 6 is magical! Apple has intentionally stripped the unnecessary bloat out that plagued us in Google Maps, and provided us with a magical intuitive interface that aligns perfectly with the feature lacking, behind the times, crap OS known as iOS 6.

If Apple made a brick, I would line up to buy it..

You are clearly missing the point. Why would Apple wait, Apple Maps is excellent, even in its early stages. Apple believed it could do a better job at Maps than Google (Spiteful or otherwise)... I definitely believe they can

You must be joking. Apple Maps is pure garbage in its current state.

  • Sparse POI database
  • Cartoonish looking maps
  • Many sidestreet / secondary street names missing
  • No transit information
  • Extremely poor coverage outside of USA, Europe
  • No street view
  • No layers (Sat, Terrain, etc.)
  • No offline support
Do you honestly think they are on the verge of overtaking Google Maps? They essentially bought a generic map database from a 3rd party (which was designed for Navigation only, unlike Google Maps which is designed for reference as well), and put their crappy iOS frame on it. I suppose you think Apple could make better cars than BMW, and better jets than Boeing?

I am shocked at how blind some of us have become (I say us, because I am a fan of Apple too. But I refuse to blindly accept everything they do just because they are Apple). Just because you like the company, it doesn't mean you have to adopt / defend everything they do. Fact is, they are WAY behind Google in the services department.

I think in USA and maybe canada apple maps is good but here in the caribbean is pretty minimal, im sure it will take a lot of time to be really usefull.

I agree that apple should have waited but others might think not :) either way i use maps services rarely.

They can, no ones disputing that. Whether they have is the question. The maps although usable are not up to the standard of Gmaps- even in they early stages they should have at least been on par with google maps IMO.

I'm going to say right off the bat, that I'm not a fan of Apple Maps in its current form.

The primary objective of any map should be functionality to help you understand an area & get you to a destination as easily as possible. In the case of a map, that means detailed information.

It doesn't mean minimalistic, pretty, "less cluttered" etc etc

It is a fact that, at this stage, we have lost a lot of the functionality of mapping from our devices until Google releases a stand-alone app.

Anyway, I have a slightly different point I'd like to address. I'd read previously that the 3-D vector graphics were supposed to be less processor intensive when compared to Google's street view, however, I'm finding that if I browse on 3-D for a period of time, say 10 minutes, it trashes my battery & the phone gets fairly hot.

Anyone having the same experience? I'm on a 4S, by the way and it seems obvious to me that street view is much quicker to navigate & the 3-D vector graphics on Apple Maps take longer to draw - In other words, it even looks more processor intensive visually.

On another note, I'm happy we now have free turn by turn capability, however, when I tried it for the first time recently it was lagging to the extent where, if I did not know the route, I would miss a turn. Might be a problem with my phone, rather than software, but I'll be keeping an eye on it.

This "argument" is repeated ad nauseum. Fact of the matter is, it will take Apple a long time to approach Google's current standards. Why should we wait for it?

Totally agree. I used the Maps App for the first time this week. I was hoping the critics were wrong but it's a total downgrade from Google Maps.

Much more laggy, not as accurate, 3D looked terrible in my opinion. Turn by turn is no substitute for what's already out there. Such as disappointment.

Confident it'll get better but knowing Apple it will take a long time.

I hate to say this but i'm hoping for that Google Maps/Navigation App for iPhone asap.

Google maps = 10 year plus development.

Give Apple a chance FFS.

Turn by Turn is absolutely brilliant and i'm coming from the TomTom app which I haven't used since installing the first beta.

The problem with Apple Maps is not that it's not 'as good as Google maps' - its that in its current state it isn't reliable.

The lack of satellite images is really poor, but you can use maps without it.

However, the vector maps are where the big problem is. They have so many errors. Now this may depend on where you live, but in the UK they have towns placed many miles away from where they should be, they have huge data issues.

The average person will type a town name into their iOS 6 device and start driving there - they will end up many miles off course.

Everyone needs to stop apologising for Apple, and saying 'oh but its new'. If it wasn't ready, then it should not have been released. They are the biggest company in the world, they have the resources.

If a new mobile OS came out that didn't let you call people, or called the wrong person, would that be ok 'because its new'? no.

Look, can't argue with the "Google maps = 10 year plus development" statement, but the fact is that Apple have decided to change the built in Map App to their own which isn't as good in comparison (yet), and that's not a good move when we're used to a certain standard at the moment.

That's the point myself and others are making, simple as that. I've reliable upon that app many times without fail. The Apple Maps app isn't providing what I am USED to in the built in maps app.

I'm sure it will get better, but the built in option is now sub-par and I will be using third party apps for maps.

Good job that us Apple users are a great community and that we report these issues and advise on misplaced POI's. Right?
