You are clearly missing the point. Why would Apple wait, Apple Maps is excellent, even in its early stages. Apple believed it could do a better job at Maps than Google (Spiteful or otherwise)... I definitely believe they can

apple is known to release quality products - not unfinished because of politics with google.

Back to the topic of Maps.. Apple made a decision, for whatever reason to sever ties with Google. This decision will have a negative impact on the usability of the device, but luckily for Apple, some users won't notice because they literally can't fathom the possibility of Apple doing wrong.

Surely not! No-one would be that blind a devotee!

Well, maybe one or two people.

Does Apple Maps access a different source for its Maps? Because on iOS6 I can now clearly see my house on satellite view. :D

I didn't read all 11 pages but....Google maps take forever to resolve. Many times i have to get going even with one quarter of the map a blank slate.

I do find it amazing that people beat Apple for a beta but Google gets full pass on beta for years....and with no intention of fixing it.

Quotes like:

I understand this is a marketing presentation, but only Apple could pull this off and actually have their fan base mesmerized. Although I am thoroughly impressed with the external design, there simply wasn't anything ground breaking in this product.

I don't really have any problem with most of those quotes, because as you mention it's part of the presentation. What would you want them to say "A new feature of the camera is panorama. It's an OK feature that we are playing catch-up with." They aren't too hyperbolic. The only quote I would have concern with is the "all new super-fast lightening connector". Did they actually ever say that?

The reason Apple got rid of google maps is obvious. And it is the right decision, even if it means some temporarily decreased mapping. Some things are better, some things are worse. Apple will be able to improve and update their maps significantly faster now that it is released to the public, due to crowd sourcing and more open development. This will create more competition with Google resulting in better maps for everyone.

If nothing else this will force Google to release their own maps app, which will likely have more features than the current google maps on iOS 5. This really is a winning situation all around. There's no downfall.

What did I want Apple to say? I wanted them to get up there and talk about new amazing features that were ACTUALLY new and amazing. Instead they resorted to the old and tired reality distortion field technique. It won't work forever.

All this talk of crowd sourcing and Apple Maps overtaking Google Maps as a result makes me laugh. Do you guys honestly think that while Apple tries to figure out mapping, Google will stand still? You are talking about the company that quite possibly has the best R&D in the world. Apple is ten years behind in maps, and they won't be taking the crown anytime soon.

This "argument" is repeated ad nauseum. Fact of the matter is, it will take Apple a long time to approach Google's current standards. Why should we wait for it?

And people were saying the same thing about google maps when it first came out. Why should we wait for these maps to be great? And now look at them.

Plenty of business school thanks..

If your BK / McD analogy is so concrete, then why has Apple relied on Google and Yahoo up until now? What do you think changed to make Apple second guess their strategy with regard to these services? What about all of the other external services that iOS continues to rely on?

Apple has relied on Google because they are in the business of selling hardware and developing media platforms and operating systems. They're not in the search business, they're not in the geolocation business. Google is tops at that, they partnered with them at a time that they didn't have the bandwidth for it.

Flash forward 10 years and the iPhone is down to subtleties and it's time to get serious about the next frontier- how consumers will use their devices day-to-day for the next 10 years and right now the future certainly looks like its about mobility, location, destination, geo-targeted information, navigation. So if Apple has decided to ween itself off of the Google nipple, starting with Maps and Local is 100% the right thing to do because in 10 years time the iPhone will still look like it does today and it'll be all about the community that uses it and how they interact with each other and the environment.

Oh dear. Ios6 final is out and no magical switch has been flicked enabling higher res maps meaning maps is terrible!

All you can see where My friend lives is a pixelated white cloud over the entire city!
It also has random road names that are completely wrong :(

but at the time Google Maps was not that bad compared to the alternatives. They were only a step behind Mapquest at the start.

It how they are doing compared to other choices right now. If Apple was only a step or 2 behind Google Maps it would be one thing but Apple maps are miles behind.

Are you for real? So you have gone from insulting my business acumen to admitting that Apple severed ties with Google because they are threatened? And you seriously think Apple is going to beat Google at their own game (search and services)? Wow!

The only thing I agree with in your last post, is that the iPhone will look the same in 10 years (might be a bit longer though).

What's with your sig by the way?

So we've gone from having the most amazing maps app to this half finished piece of crap?

Makes no sense.

How is this in the consumers interest?

Where are those people who kept saying "Stop bashing it! It is in BETA. Once it goes live Apple will throw a switch and it will vastly improve." Well, here it is live, and people are not impressed.

Please Please Google release a Maps application for iOS...

Apple Maps is the most rubbish thing ever ! I can't even see my house on the map anymore...

Fair enough. Maybe apple should have waited until they perfected it before releasing it. But like others said, maybe google will release a map app.

Hopefully apple can quicky fix the issues they seem to be having

well it does not work for buses. that makes it pretty much useless for me. Google maps worked great for bus planning trips. so Now I have a great 3d map that does not work. But hey in a year apple will have an update with the new feature. but it is nice to have a bus button that does not work.

I'm happy that I decided to wait on purchasing a new iphone 5. I'm also going to wait on updating my current phone to ios6. Good luck with those maps :p

wow, trying out maps for the first time. Looking at my location it's just a blur on the screen. Really really bad satellite images.

Not to worry.. In a year, at the iOS 7 keynote, Scott Forstall will be talking about a new industry first. A purely innovative and magical feature. "We are adding transit information to maps! Nobody has ever done this before".

So not looking forward to the new maps app. Read pretty much bad reviews about it and it looks like the released product is pretty sorry compared to what we had before. It is too bad the Google v Apple war is making us suffer with an inferior app. Here's hoping for rapid improvements.

I hope Google comes out with a map app soon that is decent for the meantime.
