Guys dont forget opening maps.google.com on ipad or iphone will give you a HTML5 app. You can then proceed to add the app to your Home Screen.

Walla, google maps, has more features than the ios5 app in some respects, but loses some others at the same time. Heres hoping for a native app some point.

...and this was what came up as soon as I downloaded iOS 6....see a difference?

Sad indeed...

better still, and I will give you a simple chnage to redeem yourseld. Here is a typical use of the maps applications.
I will meet you at exit B11-2 to go for a beer in Kabuki.
Show me the Apple provided marker... if you can...

try dropping a pin then getting walking directions to that spot with the web version. doesn't seem to work on my ipad.

I never said it would match the detail of the Google Map...I was simply pointing out that the detail is there if you zoom in to different levels....even the various exits (you can see a few of them clearly marked right on my image).

The fact that Apple shows it at various levels of zoom to keep the map clean or differently than what you are used to does not make it inferior in everyone's eyes.

Even if I zoom out to the level you showed, details show up that you claim we're not there as late as yesterday...why is that?

your quote "Shinjuku station does show the detail that the author was looking for..."

Clearly it doesn't show the details, 200+ exits and the west exit from Apple is on the wrong side of the station so you would be 10 minutes away from where you should be... Absolute classic. Thank you for the validation of my complaining...
Stop replying and embarrassing yourself...

The new maps app is better than the old but no where near replacing Motion X Drive for me to get around with.

I can see using it as a quick street view where available or even just at a glance but again not as a navi system when there are far better ones for just a few bucks.

Interestingly, the "terrain" layer is not available for the ipad web app. But it is for the iphone. So if you want to use terrain on the ipad type in the web address for the iphone page.

It's a band-aid and crutch. Google better get permission from apple to release a comprehensive app soon.

Or, with the better view on an Android device. Notice how public rail stops are listed, with the M icons representing CTA L stations, and the train icon representing Metra Commuter rail stops. Also, other items are nice, such as how the individual college buildings in the bottom left corner are labeled and drawn, and how titles are everywhere such as with street names, park names, museum areas, specific city areas etc...

As some other users are pointing out, what happens if you zoom the Apple map further in? Do you see the street names for those smaller roads, or the metro stops?

You do but you have to be extremely zoomed in and then good luck looking ahead on your route. You'll forever be scrolling on the screen.

Here's a question I have that hasn't been addressed thus far. Does Apple maps have any maps of the interiors of buildings? For example, zooming into the art museum in Chicago on Google maps shows this. One can actually even change the floor number with the sidebar that pops up. Does Apple maps do anything similar?

God no.

Nah that's google maps specific. Noticed it did that with ikea the other day lol

It's actually very good in my area. The most important thing is that the navigation is good. If you want to just look at a map, and Apple Maps is bad in your area, you can still use Google Maps (just the web version, not an app).

I am actually impressed. They have better data than TomTom in some places. My only gripe is that sateillite pictures are atrocious.

Whoa. That's incredible. My kingdom for a Google maps app on iOS that's comparable to the Android version.

I didn't realize how much difference there was between Google Maps on Android and Google Maps on iOS until I used a friend's Android a few weeks ago. I couldn't believe how much I've been missing.

This is kind of depressing... I would have expected more from Apple. Since I live near NYC and commonly frequent NYC, I would hope my maps are highly detailed. Waiting on my iPhone 4 to update to iOS 6 now and then for some experience with my iPhone 5 Friday!!

But yeah, I hope Google comes out with their own app on the appstore soon for google maps. The web apps were ghetto and remind me of the original iPhone before the appstore.

I really hope Apple decides to add things like rail lines, subway, etc. It saves my ass when I visit NYC as a Long Islander when I try to navigate the subway lines.

It is really incredible!!! Here are another few samples from Google maps, this time of a college, ORD airport, and a sears retail store. Every hallway and classroom is shown on the map at the college! Too bad I didn't have this for my first days of school, instead of having to walk around mindlessly!

That is truly out of a dream of the future (or an episode of 24). I really enjoy the technology coming out of both Apple and Google, but they tend to strike different chords with me. With Apple, I find myself thinking "wow, that function is really elegantly and slickly done." With Google, it's more like "did that app just do what I think it did?"

Those interior maps remind me of the feelings I got the first time I saw Streetview, or used a product like Ngram Viewer. I think that's why it's so special when Apple and Google play nice together: Apple's implementation paired with Google's functionality result in some phenomenal user experiences.

Apple uses TomTom maps so clearly they can't be better. Perhaps you have not updated yuor maps on TomTom.
