I think this is what a lot of people are missing. People who are saying it finds their favourite restaurant no problem and that their workplace is shown correctly are forgetting that they already know where those places are! It's when you're in the strange town and get taken to the McDonald's that closeD down over a year ago, or taken to a pharmacist 15 miles away when there is one 200 metres in the other direction that the failings of apple maps will become achingly apparent to them.

This is from Google Maps last month. That's how wrong it was. I got lost for 2 hours trying to find the correct street since Google Maps was so wrong. Granted it's in Costa Rica but that's a big and popular hotel in Costa Rica. How could it be wrong?

I love Google Maps. I'm just saying...it has errors also.

Listen, all mapping and navigation software has issues like that. I've ran in to the problem of a shop or business being closed and out-of-business MANY times, in products from ALL vendors. TomTom, Garmin, Magellan, you name it. POI are not (and can't be expected to be) real time 100% always accurate.

In fact, I recently had a situation where a certain navigation software told me a department store was a mere 2.7 miles from my location. However, upon arriving at said coordinates I found an empty corn field. Literally. Turns out the store was about 18 miles in the OTHER direction.

I would challenge you to point out a solution that is 100% accurate 100% of the time in all scenarios.

Damn straight....of course I'm checking stuff I know. How would I know if a store is in the wrong place if I've never been there?

Still checking....

This sort of takes some of the excitement out of getting our iPhone5s. I travel a lot both domestically and internationally. The google powered maps have been invaluable for navigating around strange cities and finding places. It doesn't look like Apple's maps are close to there. i REALLY hope a Google maps app is forthcoming. Apple should have held this until it was ready for primetime.

I am looking on ebay to see if there's a chance I can sell the damn thing. The unlocked one seems to go for 1700. Mine won't be unlocked and that seems to go for 900. Should have bought the unlocked one and made a profit.

I am in strange cities all the time. I actually use google maps to brows the world ALL THE TIME. and I use terrain features all the time too to analyze geography. I am looking for map apps in the app store and it doesn't look good.

This swedish guy has a comparison of google maps on galaxy sIII vs iphone 4s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WYrfkJxcnI . Time to switch, I guess. But I believe there is no alternative for the Ipad with a display as good as the ipad 3.

Apple kept warning in the release notes that all satellite data is not yet available. So I'm hoping they get it together soon.

They are awful in their current state, even Bing Maps are better.

Garmin mobile for the BlackBerry OS was possibly the best and most accurate I've used over the years. Paid my once only lifetime fee for unlimited use (which wasn't cheap at $99.00) but Google maps on the BlackBerry was just awfully clunky even though it had street view etc.

Mapping software isn't cheap if accuracy is your primary need and I didn't feel like "renting" Telenav for ten bucks a month.

Back on topic, I'm no Apple apologist. If I see poor quality, I do bring it up and have a well used flame suit just for owning a Samsung Android phone yet still use these forums.

I feel I still have the right to no matter what phone is in my pocket. I find bugs in Mac games, I love my MacBook Pro and my ACD.

Regarding Apple Maps, I don't travel as much as I used to and know my town well. If I really need GPS assistance, I have the option of using my Galaxy S2 or my standalone Garmin GPS unit (which is long overdue for an update).

I live in Osaka. I'll have to try Maps out on my iPad 2. If Maps isn't any good in Japan I don't think I'll be updating my iPhone 4 until next year I think. iPhone 5S or even iPhone 6 in 2014.

I'm very disappointed in the routing. It is creating routes with disregard for the kind of road it is placing you on. I've tried several routes and it seems to prefer shortest distance. The problem is that it is electing to move from highways/primary roads and try to run me over the worst condition secondary roads possible.

Since forums are usually the place for ppl to post when stuff goes wrong, I for one am super pleased and happy w/ the new maps. In my area, (Duluth,MN USA), it's just perfect. Guess it's just a roll of the dice for your location.

Let's be honest. No navigation app is going to give you the shortest/best route you prefer. They aren't going to know which route gives you the fastest time with traffic at a certain time of day and the cycle of the traffic lights.

Just typed in my address when I lived in Shifnal, England...yes...satellite is crap...but everything else seemed to work.

I guess you guys are sol until it's updated...I'm mesmerized just looking at Rome in 3d.

I am appalled by the new maps.

I loved google maps on my iPad (and on my iphone 4). Especially the TERRAIN view. Of course, the ugly-colored and annoying yelp-using apple maps doesn't have terrain view.

My main question is this: when will google come out with an app. And what will the app be like, will it have terrain, pins falling from the sky, etc.

Another question: when I use the google maps website instead, there doesn't seem to be a terrain feature either.

Finally, I guess I screwed myself by upgrading my ipad. Can it be downgraded or jailbroken back to the original google maps?

Terrible, just terrible. Do any retina tablets exist that have google maps with terrain?

The Nexus 7 has a screen pretty close to retina with Google Maps.

This is a real shame, just as I was being swayed back to getting the iPhone 5, we find out Apple Maps are the joke everyone using the iOS 6 betas said they were. I use Maps all the time, no deal Apple. Plus Australia won't even have turn-by-turn navigation...

It's bad

Apple Maps v1.0 does suck big time. I love Apple and have tons of their stuff. Great innovative company. But they messed this up BIG time. A week from now, this will make iPHone4 antenna-gate look like nothing.

I'm sure a year from now, IOS7 mapping will be pretty good.

I'll even pay google to download their mapping app.

After all of the bitchin' and moanin' on this thread, I have to say...I'm impressed as hell with Maps.

One thing I did check since it was a recent post, Shinjuku station does show the detail that the author was looking for...Google just shows the detail he was looking for when zoomed out further. Showing side by side Google and Apple Maps pics really isn't fair. Apple obviously felt that detailed info should only be visible when zooming in slightly closer to a poi to make it more legible...and I agree...looks great.

I was the OP of the particular Shinjuku Station thread. Having read this it is clear you are being dishonest about the level of detail at Shinjuku Station. I installed iOS6 on my iPad3 and looked at Shinjuku station. Unless you have the "magical fairy" edition of iOS6 the detail is not there. Show me screen shots of the exits, Yodobashi camera(largest electronics store in japan), indicate where the South and East exits are... actually just post me an image of the details compared to google maps please...zoom right in if you like... If you don't post it I will. Actually, I will have to post it as I KNOW it doesn't exist. It's in front of me... luckily I don't use the iPad for much more than surfing the web.
Another clear example of blatent untruths on forums... sad...

Precisely. Navigation and routes is one of those things you would think a computer would be great at...but, in reality, the logic is troubling for it. It can easily work out a path(s) between A and B but optimizing that path with all the variables (traffic, road type, etc) is no easy task. For me I'm just thrilled to have it and that it gets me where I need to go...I don't get too pissed off when it makes a mistake or whatever. Except one time in the hills of Arkansas when I was routed down a "road" that was more of a slow moving stream! (LOL)

Google reroutes you based on traffic.

I am really beside myself on this one. I'm a pilot, usually spending a lot of nights in different hotels, in new cities. For the past 4 years I've used the maps app to scope out areas near hotels, because it used to LABEL almost everything in sight.

Now, there are virtually no labeled places!! Amazingly, and here's the BEST (sarcastic) part... The data is THERE!!!!

If I search for virtually anything I know is there (Starbucks, El Dorado furntiture, Dunkin' Donuts... Etc.) it magically appears, with FULL information; however, the app will NOT just show what is around me with labels.

This is BEYOND frustrating!!!!

Hmmmm...your original Maps image you used as an example of no detail...

Correct?

I was hoping for last minute changes to maps by Apple on the official release of iOS6.
Didn't happen.
Now the Apple Map icon is stashed in my "Junk Folder" and replaced by the Google Map icon created through Safari.
Really sad, especially if you're from Japan like me.

...and this was what came up as soon as I downloaded iOS 6....see a difference?

Sad indeed...

details please. Show me the exit numbers and south and east exit. Without this info you might as well be as detailed as the earlier beta image.

just show me the detail you saw that compared favorably to google maps.

I never said it would match the detail of the Google Map...I was simply pointing out that the detail is there if you zoom in to different levels....even the various exits (you can see a few of them clearly marked right on my image).

The fact that Apple shows it at various levels of zoom to keep the map clean or differently than what you are used to does not make it inferior in everyone's eyes.

Even if I zoom out to the level you showed, details show up that you claim we're not there as late as yesterday...why is that?
