What's really sad is that Apple knew the status of their maps app. They decided to launch iphone5 and ios6 anyways. Steve never would have done that. To Steve, first impressions were everything.
Ok apple maps suck, we all got it, bbc news got it, everyone got it around the world and theynsaid they're fixing it... Within a couple weeks i'm suremit'll be in a usable shape and in a couplemmonths in top performance shape, patience people...![]()
I apologise for assuming that my £530 iPhone 5 would be at least on par, if not better, than the previous version. I'm sorry that when apple proclaimed their maps were the best thing since sliced bread, I thought they would be at least "good". There are certain things you come to expect with a top of the range smart phone, maps is one of them.
I have the feeling that if the iPhone 5 was incapable of making calls you would pass the blame onto me, I after all should have went over the beta with a fine tooth comb, and naturally not expected any improvements when it comes to the release version.
Given your outlook, god help the majority of smart phone customers who aren't particularly technical and don't come on these forums.
Is it me or is pdqgp running in full damage control mode for Apple ?
Let it go man, there's tons of issues, some universal, some localized with the maps app. Don't try to tell others what is fine or not and what they lost will eventually get fixed. You're not being paid by Apple to do this, let them take care of this PR mess they created for themselves.
No doubt the iP5 is better but if Maps was a Key feature you were so pronouncedly focused on having be perfect then I do feel you need to have done the research on that feature prior to buying. What role do you feel you own on mapping? Did you do any research on the beta of the new OS or Maps?
You're right, there are people here in the states that buy a Verizon iPhone then bitch that it doesn't do voice calls and data at the same time. There are those that buy AT&T iPhones and live in NYC where reception is known to be horrible. THEY DO OWN THAT, not Apple and not the carriers.
Given your lack of research, buying on assumptions and believing solely in keynote announcements and that simply an expensive smart phone will yield utopia in terms of mapping, God help you in your future purchases. You joined in September so perhaps you're one of those that wasn't particularly technical and didn't come to the forums. I'm sorry but again, research falls on them and you. To what degree, we can disagree, but you do have a role in the decision you made to buy what you did when you did.
To my knowledge, you are the first to post a favorable review from Asia. Users from Korea, India, and Japan have all posted negative reviews, some with very detailed explanations. Living in Vietnam, I really don't dare to make the upgrade to iOS6 at least until I am sure there is a Google maps.app alternative (not browser based.)I'm living in China, and I'm very happy to have the apple maps.
Everything is more detailed, better positions of the locations.
Google only does or English, or Chinese, where Apple gives everything in both languages, that's convenient.
By being blind just because Apple is taking away the dominance of Google is not the right way.

I read plenty of iPhone 5 articles prior to buying it, and in not one of them did it mention the impending doom of maps. I know many people with iPhones, I knew that they were very functional. How was I supposed to predict that the maps would be horrific? I have other things to do in my life rather than spend an eternity double checking every iOS feature.
But really, when paying that much for a phone, especially from a company that supposedly prides itself on everything "just working", I shouldn't have to do any research at all.
You may think differently, but I am of the opinion that companies like Apple should not be reducing functionality and calling it an upgrade.

I'm In Hangzhou (zhejang province)
The map details apple is using is from TOM TOM, many people are using their navigation system in their car.
Apple does the navigation.
I will check some other locations, and compare them,
Keep you posted.
I'm not saying spend an eternity double checking every iOS Feature. However, if Maps are that important to you then I would have thought you'd have done a little reading. This site is dang easy to find on the web and the iOS 6 forum has been here for months.
You're reasoning is very flawed. Very flawed. Consider yourself lucky what's happening to you is just a phone. I know a lot of Jaguar owners who no longer think it's funny to hear jokes about their mechanics sitting next to them.
I don't think giving Google the boot is a bad move. I also don't go expecting the debut release of their maps is going to be perfect either. Lastly I don't think them adding turn by turn is taking a step backwards. I also don't think making a huge stink about either considering there are at least 4 other mapping apps that are free to nearly free to just a few bucks that do 10x better jobs for everything your looking to do. Just get one of them and move on with the results of your decision.

I was going to ask you but you seem to have re-posted the screenshots. They are still a little small but we get the point. The double language thing must be a plus. I am curious what city you are in. Have you tried locations outside of your own city? I am feeling mostly negative about this but appreciate your input.
It was more a case of not realising how much I used maps on my phone until that functionality was decimated by iOS6.
I don't think theres any convincing you, apples maps are incredibly flawed and thats not my fault, I'm not sure I quite understand why you bother to come on these forums if nothing is ever a problem to you and you shoot down anyone who dares suggest it is.
Apple has produced a sub standard upgrade, only by discussing these flaws and keeping them in the public eye can we hope to see an improvement, if everyone simply told themselves off for buying the product every time something was below par, well I'm pretty sure we'd be a good few decades behind technology wise!
Anyway I'm off now, it's 3am here in Glasgow - you know, that place Apple thinks half of Edinburgh is![]()
The reality is that if every other mapping service has errors and problems after years (decades?) of work, what makes you think Apple can pull off a miracle in a few weeks?
Tele Atlas (i.e. TomTom) is notoriously slow to update its maps, but that doesn't always mean that Google is as far behind as they are.
Around here, the maps seem to be 6 or 7 years out of date - even the satellite view is more current.
I'm surprised OpenStreetMap isn't being used more - simply because the community fixes problems much quicker than any company ever could.
That's exactly what I was thinking when I first used it. Everyone in Apple who had any experience with the iPhone 5 or iOS6 must have known about how terrible the maps were, yet they still released it and called them "Beautiful".. perhaps we are all philistines and should learn to appreciate this wonderful piece of unusable technology!![]()

They should add google maps or something for the time being but they said its a cloud server that gets better with more use, and they could simple fix things by adding current map plans of tom tom or other companies to their own, atkeast to add labels and all that, they could do that quite swiftly within a couple weeks or month. It took google 7 years to get here, but itll take only 1-2 years to make something as google if not better with all these technological advances. Google maps didnt add **** in the middle east except for like 1-2 years now, so google sucked for 5 years for anyone living in the middle east and directions only worked like 6-12 months in the middle east, apple came full prepped for that... It does lack more than google but google has been here for 7-8 years!!! Apple maps aint the best i wont defend them, but like everyone is nagging and attacking them and they try to solve it but one day wont do, sowhy is everyone still nagging again and again, its all over the news and they are working on it... Like either stay on ios5.1.1 or add google maps to home screen, or use a third party app, or use maps.google.com in safari till its fixed. Surely ifyou think they need 6 years to get as good as google you're for sure wrong... Within a year I bet all streets in the world will be named inc. places like middle east and all. Even before then. I admit they shouldnt force us to use it, but like harassing them over it is plain dumb if done more than once...
Id love you guys to go to non technological places and see how iphones work without siri, facetime, or maps xDhaha no offense meant and i was quite dissapointed because i live in uk with a not so good map system but just i just added google maps to home screen or whatso
Why try to reinvent the wheel, Google has perfected mapping, it is a huge part of what they do. Same goes for YouTube, Apple was smart to discontinue their version and just let those who own the product, develop for it.
When it started, WE WEREN'T DOWNGRADING FROM SOMETHING THAT WORKED PERFECTLY!!!
Google maps has never been perfect! It couldn't even pull up my local post office last week, and kept trying to send me on some wild goose chase to a false location, which I would have followed if I didn't know better. Apple pulled it up correctly first time. Some searches are incomplete with Apples search now, but keep some perspective and remember that we are on this road because Google are punks who deliberately gimped iOS users for years!
I know what you mean. iMessage is another compete waste.
If you are quoting me to flame, look up the word sarcasm first.

I can't help but feel Apple wasted time and money on Maps. I would have approved the Google Maps application for launch and spent money elsewhere.

This is like Apple creating their own version of Twitter...just terribly redundant and not needed.
I digress, I assumed your specs list was to be believed.Try not assume in the futureit doesn't work for you.I forgot to update my specs down below that i have a 4S...
Somewhere in that jumbled run on sentence you forgot the very simple fact taht during development, Google just didn't have any competitors.
As of Apples release, Google is the de-facto standard to compare to. All of a sudden millions of people have been robbed of that.
Oh yeah, they can't go back either if they have a 4S. Apple doesn't allow it (great idea, Apple. Screw the customer and then they lose the ability to undo the change).
