Nothing great about that article...

[ed note : article in question http://blog.telemapics.com/?p=399 ]

What did you find that was wrong with the blog exactly ? Guy is knowledgeable in the area of maps, had made a prior analysis of the beta application and now details what he thinks should be done to fix the issues with what Apple has shipped.

Which part do you think he got wrong ?

How could Apple do this to its users  The new Maps app is so terrible. I can't even find my home as it doesn't have a name of my home's street LOL

Maybe it's just a PR trick =D

What is ? Again, if you have an issue with the article, please state it clearly. Guy seems to have a good grasp on what he's talking about.

Much of the time I'm using Maps outdoors or in my car. I need the kind of definition, visibility and clarity that exists on Google Maps.

That is the one universal issue I have a problem with too. Sure the Apple maps overall look nicer, more "polished" and "prettier" to the uglyness of clashing colors used on Google Maps. But there was a definite utility to the ugliness of the design of Google's solution : it was meant for readability.

And for a map, looking pretty is not going to improve user experience and usability. So in a sense, I think this is one issue Apple simply chose wrong, saw a problem where there wasn't one. "Maps being ugly" is not a problem. If they are ugly to be readable, then it's fine !

Sorry that I don't write it clearly. I meant the comment I quoted might be a PR trick, since the article is fine & I don't see the problem with his points too ;)

interesting article on the impact of new ios6 maps around the world.

Transit: Removed from 51 countries with 4.9 billion people.
Traffic: Removed from 24 countries with 2.4 billion people.
Street View: Removed from 40 countries with 3 billion people.

In total, 63 countries with a combined population of 5 billion people will be without one or more of these features they previously had in iOS. Apple is risking upsetting 70% of the world’s population

We've already discussed this article earlier this week and frankly, the conclusions are downright silly. Call me when 100% of the world population owns iOS devices.

Reality makes this article rubbish. The installed base of iOS isn't that big.

yep thats true i noticed that aswell.

Still don't get why Apple don't use Tom tom's data in the UK and other countries where Tom Tom sell sat navs. Surely it'd be the wise thing to do....

I really hope that google releases an application for their maps! apple's maps are awful!!!

So do I, but will a standalone Google Maps app integrate with iOS fully? For example, if someone e-mails you a street address you can click on it in Mail and it opens Maps and shows the location. I doubt that a Google Maps app will be able to replace that functionality.

One thing I can say is that yesterday, Apple Maps on my iPhone 4 running iOS 6 got me to the Verizon store that had just moved six weeks prior to a new location that I'd never been to before.

Google Maps still had the old location and no trace of the new location. So, in at least one instance yesterday, Apple Maps was more accurate than Google Maps.

Well thats true, it integrates very well.

But Does Apple Maps? Work? No.

Google maps WORKS.

Of course not. A Google Maps application also won't replace MapKit which now is stuck using Apple's Maps instead of Google Maps like it did in iOS 5 and prior.

That means that all apps built on top of MapKit in iOS 6 now use Apple's maps. simply installing Google Maps does not fix the issue for a lot of other apps/services you rely on with iOS devices.

At least Kim Jong Un will like the new and improved iOS 6 maps:

I haven't read every single post of this endlessly repeating thread but my god, has none of you Negative Nancys ever tried using any of a number of different GPS or Navigation apps available out there?

Personally I like to use Skobbler (GPS Nav 2) over the old Map App.

My wife and drove down the street...in Chicago...and there are NO places listed for blocks and blocks, regardless of the zoom level. This is a part of town where literally every building is a business. No names. Zero. Please try to excuse this Apple apologists!!!!

Well it didn't take long for Tom Tom to push the blame on apple and all their layers into the app. I travel a lot and if the maps app is an utter failure, I may just stick with my SIII. Apple has 30days to straighten it out. I'm not gonna wait for it to be one of their 200 new features on the new 5s.

There are changes to a neighborhood that I'm familiar with that Google had a year ago that Apple doesn't have. I think the full sat. picture looks great as do some NY scenes - I don't like the look of the standard.

It is not what you'd expect of Apple especially since they bought a bunch of technology and partnered with Tom - Tom. Does TT have some of the same errors?

Tom Tom Is Not the Problem

Install the free Scout by Telenav app (now with 12 months of free premium service) that uses the Tom Tom base maps. No compare that to the Apple maps. No comparison, there is much more detail in the Telenav app. While the Tom Tom maps may not be nearly as good as Google, there is something in the Apple implementation which has neutered the maps by stripping out lots of details like bodies of water, train lines, parks, etc.

While that would work, every time I click on a address from an email or contacts it will launch apples app. I have no issues with using 3rd party apps (use android as well), IF apple would allow me to select what I want to use as the default. But that requires them to give up control and that's not happening. Because they force you to do it their way and their way only, it becomes more of a hassle. All of a sudden iOS isn't so seamless, and that's why we buy apple.

can anyone tell me how maps is a "cloud" business and will improve over time by its users? that apple statement seems like BS to me. i doubt if i look up a "grey area" for 100+ times, the map source material will magically improve lol

I agree. I actually don't like the Scout app... I was just using it as an example of how Tom Tom data is not solely behind the Apple map fail.

It is apple
If you search by location where you are then it's accurate and recent data. If you search for an address or poi then it's a complete disaster which is apple's fault. I bet google and everyone else has patented the searching and parsing of strings so apple has some work ahead

WAze, navigon or tomtom. Apple maps are crap

No doubt the iP5 is better but if Maps was a Key feature you were so pronouncedly focused on having be perfect then I do feel you need to have done the research on that feature prior to buying. What role do you feel you own on mapping? Did you do any research on the beta of the new OS or Maps?

Sorry, but you don't get to blame people's normal expectations.

This is Apple's goof, not the fault of its customers.

I'm wondering if Apple farmed this work out to an offshore team, perhaps in China (since those maps seem to be better than anywhere else).
