You don't get a billion in cash giving away something many people will never use. You can, however, get a billion in cash while forcing everyone that buys a product to pay for a device they'll never use.

I don't understand why people don't use them, I can't live without remote buddy!

I never use my remote aswell, and in Europe Macbook Pros are cheaper after this update (in norway the base model went down 1000kr (~150$)) so the penryns are atleast here much cheaper, even if i have to pay the extra for the remote.

I'll agree, it's a very small percentage of the cost of a MB/MBP, but we're not seeing it from the same perspective as their bean-counters.

Bingo.

People who bitch and say that $2 or even $20 is nothing to apple have no concept of margins.

By the way, how come nobody ever says a thing when apple starts bundling in stuff they used to charge for? "ohhh in that case, it's cause tech prices went down- they're still greedy bastards!"

I think the problem is perception and visibility. Bury the cost of the remote in the price of the laptop. I would not quibble or notice the extra $19 in the price of the computer but when you see it charged separately, the optics are not good.

the new MBP base model should be lower than $1999. considering that the cost to build one is cheaper than the previous model.
🙂

why do ppl complain about things like this? If you don't like the fact that apple isn't a charity and actually wants to make money stop buying apple products... its that simple...

Cause some people here think they live in a commune or something.

I don't quite get it. I always wonder what professions they work in. I also assume they have never taken a business 101 course.

Whoever said that not getting a $20 remote for free was a dealbreaker -- WOW.

I hear you. But $2018 and $2518 are terrible price points!

What if they included the remote but took out another $5 cost item.. people would be complaining about that. And since I would imagine most people don't use their remotes, apple decided to ditch the remote instead of whatever other items that's inside the laptop itself or use a cheaper part on something.

No way does/should apple just eat the cost of the remote. If you're a shareholder (and I am not) and they did something dumb like that, you'd be suing with good reason.

I get it, Apple never does anything wrong. End of transmission.

Odd. I would have thought the words "forcing everyone that buys a product to pay for a device they'll never use" would have been considered criticism of Apple. I guess we're speaking a different dialect.
