I think most consumers would rather have something that still works quite well, for a lower price, than the 'latest and greatest'. While the IPad 2 clearly is faster/lighter/has cameras, if you don't need that stuff, but want an IPad that is still plenty capable, why not go for a 1 and save some $$ that you can put towards a 3 next year?
Besides, when the 3 does come out, maybe the 2's will also be reduced in price, that would be sweet. Of course, then we will be having this same disussion...LOL

So you spent $200 more on two pieces of old, used, second hand kit versus a new iPad 2...smart.

Indeed, it was a smart decision if it met his needs.

Not everyone has the same needs or priorities. Seems obvious, but based on their responses it appears to escape the grasp some of the posters here.

I bought an iPad off craigslist for $350 and saved about $200 because if I bought an iPad 2 in stores it would have been about $560 for me thanks to california's sales tax. I just wanted one to play games and surf the internet in class. Only about 3 of my friends have a device that has face time and I have an iPhone 4 and a lap top if I really need to see someone's face while I'm talking to them. Easy decision for me.

Some people in this thread don't understand that others may not need all the new features.

I bought an ipad first gen on the day of the announcement of the 2nd gen. I bought it mainly for reading pdfs. I don't see how the new one is going to help with that. Plus since I will be on rotations, if it is lost or stolen, I would rather have the cheaper one.

What about this one? Found a 32 gb wifi that is mint and four months old. Includes apple case, screen protector and apple component video kit for tv. They accepted 375.

Thoughts on this deal?

Not bad. In case you didn't have it handy, here are the Apple Refurb Store prices: http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/ipad

That's a good basis for comparison.

I'm puzzled though; if they've accepted $375, aren't you somewhat committed to that price? Unless it isn't as they described when you get there (assuming craigslist or similar), renegotiating an agreed upon price is not going to make the seller happy.

As to whether the included accessories add value to you, that's a personal decision. I'd have zero use for a component video kit, and if the screen protector is the wet-application vinyl type (Invisibleshield) it'd have zero value to me as I hate that kind. You may be different, so you're going to have to decide that one for yourself.

I'm thinking about getting a 16GB refurb for $350 and a 64GB iPad 2 later so that I can do some true multitasking. Your thoughts?

iPad 1 16gb wifi £289 brand new in uk

Hi, the iPad 1 is an amazing deal now, nine months ago it was state of the art tech that everyone wanted and it still is amazing compared to other tablets. The new iPad 2 is going to be thinner, lighter, faster and have two cameras but hey hang on isn't iPad 1 thin enough, light enough and all ready pretty fast? I think so, and I defo don't need a camera. I think iPad 2 dosnt have enough new features to warrant the extra £150 and these reduced iPad 1s are a bargain.

Good point you know with these great guys at apple bringing out new stuff we will be having this conversation ever Jan for iPad 3, 4, 5, 6 etc and then every June for iPhone 5 and 6 and 7 and every September for iPod nano 7 and 8 and you get the picture!!!

Many companies and employees won't be able to purchase the iPad 2 because of the camera. Unless apple is planning a corporate iPad 2 without the built in camera, people will not be able to bring an iPad 2 to work just because of security policies.

I was at my local apple store today and there were 8-10 people in there buying the 1st gen iPads. Do they not know that the refresh is this coming Friday? Maybe they were taking advantage of the discounted pricing but even with a discount I would still hold out this late in the game.

I waited until the 2nd gen came out to get my first gen. I did so because I knew the price of the 1st gen refurbs would come down just like the mbp refurbs did when the 2011 mbp came out. While I could have bought a 2nd gen the 1st gen is more then adequate for my needs and is easier to carry around then my laptop.

It isn't surprising that people are flocking to buy the 1st gen. It came out 10 months ago and defined the tablet market for a reason. That reason doesn't disappear because version 2 is on the horizon. In this economy many people are looking for ways to save money while still consuming.

Still will buy 1st gen iPad for a good price. Plus it is very good as ebook reader to read every electronic book + pdfs. Camera and other goodies are not so essential.
