somewhere warm, dark, and cozy
Looking at the photo below, take a quick guess as to which app I used last. What I'm debating right now is whether I should exchange it and go through yet another painful process of setting up a new phone. I never restore from backup. I would hate to have to deal with potentially more serious display issues down the road. And on top of all of that, my power button doesn't depress deep enough to give that satisfying press feedback. It's starting to drive me nuts.

Of course you should exchange it for a new one. Just set the new using iCloud backup / iTunes encrypted backup and it will be ready to use as the last phone. No reason for not using it.

Exchange it. One reason I dont buy iPhone when the launch, quality seems to be not as good as they rush for volume.

And this is just another worry sign OLED problems just dont go away.

Sure it is burn in and not some visual transition after effect (In which case it could just be a software bug)? If you power off ad back in is it still there?
Looks like actual burn in. Image retention is a different thing where there is some ghosting which goes away.

How long did you have it on the calculator like that? Burn in is usually a longer process (for example, a lock screen), no? That seems strange.

Either way, definitely get it changed.

That’s an idiotic rationale to delay or avoid replacing a clearly defective piece of equipment - back it up via iTunes (or Apple Configurator), make sure to select ‘encrypt backup’ - as it then stores and restores all your passwords - and get your iPhone replaced under warranty (and subsequently restore via iTunes), since it’s clearly defective.

Ultimately, your choice if you want to live the next 2 years with a defective iPhone that will on,y get worse.

so XDR is too freaking bright for the OLEDs to recover from. Nice

No surprised - again, I’m not a big fan of OLEDs for that, and many other reasons. IPS LCD will remain superior on many fronts, specifically longevity and reliability. The move to OLED was driven as a #MeToo gimmick and endorsed by decision makers that have no understanding of these issues and only value appearances (OLED, at first, looks pretty).

To answer some of the questions, I had the calculator on for about 30 seconds. The "burn-in" goes away after about 2 minutes. Whether it's an actual burn-in or image retention/ghosting, it still worries me. My previous Pro Max had no such issue.

That’s not burn in if it goes away, that would be image retention. I would get a replacement though, that does seem very quick for retention even if it isn’t permanent.

What other reasons?

I've got a feeling that always using Dark Mode will be the burn-in death of these OLEDs. No facts to back it up, just a feeling
