Still not too sure why some folks are so "sensitive" over your Macs. I bought one, use it and am NOT impressed with it. It certainly doesn't measure up to my expectations. Especially at its "best of the best" for multi-media usage "hype". Its like owning a BMW with fixed side mirrors or seats that cannot be adjust. re: Fixed iSight camera settings and Fonts / screen images that get distrorated when enlarging - for better readability. Yet, many folks say how wonderfull the iMacs are. I don't get it.... I keep saying where there's gaps (explain where and what Apple needs to do to fix it) and people dance around my points. Or, they feel I'm insuilting their culture. I really don't get it. And if wondering, Win 7 has some huge gaps as well. Its register is a huge gap. Tell me "Win 7 has a huge gap by using a Register" and I will agree 1000%. But mention a gap in an IMac or Mac OS and people get upset. Or, they get very sarcastic about it. I really don't get it...

.

Then sell your Mac and built your own PC?
I don't get why your even posting or using a Mac if u don't like it

biggd.

My plan is to "run the iMac until it dies - or needs to be replaced". My wife uses it for pictures and my son uses it for iTunes. NO Apple Care for it. I will NOT be soaking another dime into it. When it dies, it dies.

I'm hoping now until then, Apple create "updates / patches" to fix some of its "most PITA gaps". Or, perhaps its future OS (Lion) will have less gaps. For example: Global size DPI ratio sizing, included iSight Camera Settings and in time, native BluRay (not 3rd party add-ons) are my biggest beefs. If Apple can fix these gaps (my top hated gaps), then I'd buy AppleCare or buy a future iMac. Currently, these 3 gaps PEE me off the most. And if I would have known these gaps existed in the first place, I would have bought something different.

Perhaps I have a lonely voice. But I get the feeling that others are pleased with its crystal clear screens (especially the 27" iMac folks) but are disappointed in extreme small text. Small text to the point where some folks are getting headaches.

I plan to keep our iMac for a while - since its good with pictures, iTunes, online spell check but for many other things, its not very impressive. Will keep it - until she blows or Apple releases gap "fixes".

When I initially saw this thread, not a single thought had crossed my mind that this thread will get 77 posts within just 3 lousy days:cool:.

Someone is happy about his Mac, that's good. That's exactly why this forums are here. Someone sharing his experiences with other iMac users.

I never thought a discussion about the iMac not being so perfect or about people saying they like Windows more would be become the main subject in this thread.

Somethings will always amaze you. Which also a good thing, I guess.

I agree. I share my experiences that my iMac has gaps (in some areas), it doesn't 100% impress me (for many valid reasons) and others get their nylons in a knot. It's like I was attacking their culture or religion. It too amazes me that when someone stands up and in Mac crowd and says, "hey - I don't like it and here's why", others get defensive.... That amazes me as well....

No one is attacking you, relax. What may be valid reasons for you, is not for the majority of Mac users. If you're not impressed that is your prerogative. No harm in that, you're entitled to that claim. Just don't expect every one on a Mac forum to agree with your reasons.

Your so called 'gaps' are obscure reasons not to own a Mac to most of the Mac users out there. If they are a big deal for you, don't use a Mac. The Mac does not fit your uses, or live up to what you thought it was, we all get that. But for 99% of Mac users it exceeds their uses.

But you will use a Windows machine that has more gaps than a sponge to the majority of Mac users. What responses do you think you were going to get?

This thread was about a person happy with their Mac. You claim to like Windows better and that Macs have gaps on a thread that the OP is praising about his Mac.
Did it ever occur to you that people on a Mac forum would not necessarily agree with you?

What do you think that if I went to a Windows 7 forum and said that my Windows Machine does not do everything I need it to do, not impressed with it, but I still like my iMac, what type of responses do you think i would get?

And good luck waiting for your Mac to die. It's not a Windows machine, so you will most likely be waiting for a very, very long time.

+ 1 here Spike, you are not alone. I like my Mac, and I think the experience I am getting by just using it on a daily basis worth the value I paid for it. My plan is to continue using Macs and PCs, as I think my spectations where not fully met on my Mac. I am also amazed when I see replies by efervescent Mac users in forums like this one: "You cannot do that", "buy more memory, buy a bigger external HD", "that is how the workflow should be", and lack of answer for several technical issues. Some fanboys here look and feel like a "mini Jobs".

Some issues I see that are real turn downs are:
- iMovie don't work with native AVCHD;
- no freeware anywhere to record Bluray;
- minor crashes for no reason: Safari, Recycle (specially secure empty);
- lack of compatibility with sofwares developed for older versions.

Peace! :)

I think you missed the point. The iMac isn't perfect. I can go "on and on" on the many gaps with the iMac machines and with Mac OS. Every time I bring up an gap, people think I'm attacking their "super perfect" iMac, Mac OS or Apple company. Would I pay "Dell, and it was $950 " NO. Like many, I got "sucked into the hype" of iMac and after a few months of using it, I notice it isn't perfect. It has gaps. For 2 to 3 times more price then my HP Laptop, I expect more. Much more. Thus, I no longer have "that WOW" feeling. Think of it this way.... If I bought a BMW instead of a "generic" Chev, I expect much more from that BMW as well. After all, BMW has a market repuation of smooth and easy to drive. Much better then a chevy. If iMac and OS is that great (better then a Windows clunker), do tell me the Apple native solutions (without 3rd party solutions) for the following?

- Ability to change Font & Menu sizing without text distoration? Windows 7 has a DPI ratio in a central location. What's Apple's Mac OS solution?
- Ability to play BluRay on the iMac. No, not 3rd party solutions. Native solution from Apple?
- Ability to change iSight Web Cam settings from within Mac OS? Why do I need to buy iGlasses (3rd party solution) to change simple things like lighting and zoom?

Like I keep saying... IMac and OS have "gaps". And they will continue have gaps - until people lobby - to fill these gaps. I'm not attacking your family's culture or religion. Just saying that iMacs (today's models) has gaps. And, they can do much better.... Sorry if others cannot agree (and cannot provide native solutons to my above 3 examples).

.
If you can go on and on about "gaps" with IMac’s "text distoration" etc., then you should have put that in your post, instead you posted a comparison based on information you are now admitting was completely inaccurate. I was just pointing out this inaccuracy.

Some of their products are ridiculously priced, the Imac is one that happens to hold up rather well when compared to similarly equipped PC's, because a similar monitor would be at least $800.

If you wanted to rant about the 15" and 17" MacBook pro being overpriced, I would be right there with you. But the IMac and 13" MacBook’s stack up rather well when compared to other PC's.

I actually HATE my Mac because it never breaks down. I have no reason to take it apart, no reason to upgrade it or install the OS. It OWNS me simply because I can't get in there and fiddle. After 3 years it's slowed down a little, and I'm so eager to just rip it apart and replace stuff, but aside from a SSD drive and a Lion install..... I'll prolly have it for 5 more years

One reason I seriously do dislike my Mac is the fun it takes out of my trips to MicroCenter. I used to go to MicroCenter and come home with a new video card, new sound card, new processor, new motherboard, etc, now I get none of that.

I used to spend about $1200 a year on new PC components, now I spend about $400 a year selling my old Imac and buying a new one.

I do miss the feeling of getting that brand new Video Card or 2, however.

WOW feeling. Not for me.

I miss the abilitty to enlarge text and menus without distortion. I miss the ability to remove a USB device without dismounting it. I also miss the ability to turn down the volume level without hitting some key on the keyboard and I miss the ability to adjust iSight camera lighting and ZOOM ability. I also miss the ability the download movies much faster. GAPS that Apple needs to take seriously and fix. If I would have known about these gaps, I would NOT have purchased my iMac. It's a simple as that.

I bet u don't miss PC viruses
Or PC bloatware
Or cheap PC parts
Or a OS that slows down after a month

Interesting...

I've yet to get a virus. If wondering, I do "clean" usage of computers. Don't open FREE items, don't open stuff from unknown folks and don't visit SMUT sites. And, I keep tight firewalls as well...

Cheap parts. Yes. That's a good one. My Password drive for PC is $20 less then a My Passport drive for MAC. Exact same drive, same size and same USB connection. One is formatted in PC and one is formatted in MAC. Yet. They charge more for the MAC drive. Someone see's MAC on the label and they must charge $20 more for it. Yet, its the exact same physical device. Yes. I like lower costs parts for the PC.

What good is a high res screen of the iMac if its text and menus are too small to comfortably read? Ask the folks with big 27" iMac who are getting migraines. Do you want a migraine or the ability to enlarge text and menus without distortion? I know which option they would pick....

Oh - forgot to ask. How do you play BluRay on the iMac without going 3rd party parts? Great iMac but it cannot do native bluRay. Another gap that folks keep forgetting about...

Why would anyone buy blue ray? It's garbage.
Why pay when i can download, for money or for free

Why can't anyone answer my question???? How can one change font / menu size "without distortion" on the iMac? Even when I click "A" (for zoom / font size increase), its text becomes distorted. And, menu size won't change with "A" - only raw text. Both text and menus remain small, hard to see and being so small, it gives some people headaches. Why can't anyone answer my question? Like I keep saying above. WOW - I cannot believe that simple global font / menu size change cannot be done on the iMac systems. Sad. Very dad....

.

Why can't anyone answer my question?

Because the operating system does not provide a way to do it.

You cannot perform the total equivalent of the Windows "Large Font" (+125%, +150%) settings.

Since somebody mentioned TinkerTool, I have tried it and it helps with some things. Like Mail. You can set your Mail reading and writing windows to be large enough to read without any kind of distortion or breaking of tables. However, there is no viable solution to tiny text like that found on the tabs of the various Safari windows when you have several tabs open.

You also have to be careful not to set System Headline and other settings beyond 14, because the operating system's table will not expand to hold a font size like 18, and you'll just end up with an ugly visual with part of the headline hidden.

When you combine this with the easy ability to zoom the Safari browser windows, this might be enough for a large number of OSX users who miss Large Fonts.

But it's still problematic trying to zoom and focus Pages and Numbers windows.

All I can think is that we're supposed to either get used to it or move back to Windows.

Here is a link to TinkerTool, if you want to try it: http://www.bresink.com/osx/TinkerTool.html

I do not get any kind of distortion when using this application. You can even set font smoothing higher to assist with the crispness of letters. But I fear that even using this tool, you are simply never going to get the equivalent of the Windows Large Fonts option, an option that it's very obvious that many of us miss when we move to OSX from Windows.

Here's to hoping that OSX Lion includes this kind of operability.

Let me say, too, that even after the careful application of various font settings in TinkerTool, I am still switching on the fly between my native resolution of 2560x1440 and a more visible setting of 1920x1080.

This is at least easier to do than it was on Windows. :)

I already put in a post on the same topic that there is a Safari extension called AllPages Zoom that when set on one page will be set globally for all sites until it is changed. I am using it as I type. But it seems you just want to rant without investigating and more than likely just a person who enjoys instigating argument, such as a troll. BTW, as far as I know "A to zoom" is a Windows feature, not Mac. Cmd++ increases text size.

my imac comes thursday and the main reason i bought it is that i am so impressed on the OS. when i go back on my desktop it doesnt feel as polished as the MBP does. things that i didnt know about annoy me now and i am beginning to hate windows. i already own a bunch of apple devices so i dont want to become an apple fanboy, but i really enjoy apple products.

if there is a cheaper alternative to an apple product which is just as good i will buy it, apple isn't the beginning and end for me.

I love the cheapness of PC's
But love the Mac OS way more; All the porn I want = 0 Viruses

mac...

I've been a PC power user for quite a while now. I started a new job a few months ago and despite asking for a PC, they provided a mac. At first I was so annoyed at switching keyboard shortcuts from home/work that I ended up purchasing an Imac 27 i7 to replace my 4 year old PC. So far, I've been incredibly impressed. I've experienced none of the issues debated on this forum related to the display, everything is actually much better than I could have hoped for.

It's going to be difficult for me to go back to PC someday(altho I feel that Steve Jobs will need to change his stance regarding criticism, otherwise he's poised to the same fate that Nintendo had in the 90s).

Sorry...

I'm not a troll. Just a person who keeps saying that "global sizing" of text & menus without distortion does NOT exist. A few folks have acknowledged this gap. There's some who continue to "dance around" like always doing CMD-+, CMD-+, CMD=+ (****, too distorted, CMD-"-" to make it read better) keys to constantly change TEXT size. Some people fail acknolegde their mighty iMac has a gap. A gap that "crappy Windows" system can do.

Guys - Please "relax".

My wife loves our new iMac for photos, for iTunes, loves typing on its larger size keyboard and loves its many other features. If truth be known, I love our new iMac in many areas as well. If only our iMAc had global size font / menu sizing. Then, I'd be 1,000% sold on the iMac. Currently, doing CMD="A" for better read-ability is a pain. A huge PITA. An area that Apple can do better. Hopefully, their next OS verion (Lion) will have this simple feature. re: Global font / menu sizing via DPI ratio adjustment. Especially since they keep making their screens with better DPIs - which by default, it making their default fonts / menus too small to read - which creates eye strain or headaches...

If you don't like the font sizing options on Mac, then either pay for Lasik, or switch back to PC. This is a known issue, and it doesn't bother any of the Mac users I personally know. I spend all day, every day sitting in front of various Macs, and I have no headaches or eye strain, and I'm blind in one eye!

I personally prefer the small font over wasting hours and hours of my valuable time keeping a windows system operating, but you won't see me on here blasting windows all day because of it's "gaps". Maybe someday Mr. Jobs will decide to address this issue, but I have a feeling that an everlasting thread on Macrumors won't have much to do with that decision.
