I agree with quite a few posters in here. Are people really this stupid?

This is why the government mandates companies put 20 different warning labels on everything, because people are MORONS and cannot read or comprehend what they are doing. You sign a contract, and agree that you are stuck to that phone for 2 years. If you want to upgrade once a year when the shiny new iPhone is introduced then either pay retail or Im not sure if its an option for the iPhone, but pay the 1 year subsidized price.

At Verizon the 1 year subsidized price is only usually $50 to $70 more than the 2 year so its worth it for those who want to switch often.

And it says im not eligible till 1/6/2011 which isnt even this year. I mean really, by then, Apple will be teasing us with another iPhone.

And you'll be right back here complaining they won't let ya get that one either.

People, honestly, AT&T doesn't forbid you from getting the 4, they just won't subsidize it for you when you haven't fulfilled your commitment on the previous phone they handed you subsidized.

I'm not sure it's stupidity. It's an entitlement thing. Which I guess breeds stupidity as you call it. But it's more an ego-centric thing. "I want what I want when I want it regardless"

For better and worse - that's part of the societal "norm" now - instant gratification. No one NEEDS a new phone unless theirs is broken. And certainly no one NEEDS an iPhone when there are so many other phones on the market.

Some people should learn the difference between NEED and WANT. Because I think many don't truly "get it."

I'm not eligible for an upgrade but I am eligible for an early upgrade (as you are)

I just sold my 16GB 3GS for $300 on CL. Meaning I will only have to pay $200 for a 32GB 4. Is that so bad? No. Not at all, considering I bought my phone in October.

Just do that, if you didn't qualify it was for a reason.

This thread is hilarious....

Here in the UK and I'm sure in the states too... early upgrades are just not available on any other handset.... Obviously the carriers are trying to capitalise on the high demand and get customers locked in for another 18m or 24m. We should count ourselves lucky that we can upgrade even a few months early...

I personally am due an upgrade on 10th July with O2 UK and am entitled to upgrade 1 month early due to my spend level.... All my friends who were rubbing their shiny 3GS' in my face last July feel sick now... That same feeling I had last year...

But you should know what you're signing up to when you sign on the dotted line!

Such is life!

I'll assume that's rhetorical.

Personally, I'm already off contract, and debating getting an iPhone 4 unsubsidized. Sure, I pay more up front, but then I have the freedom from a contract. On the other hand, I don't pay a discounted rate for my service, so I'd in effect be paying a double premium for an unsubsidized phone. Is the lack of contract worth the extra $400 to me?

Clearly it's not, unless I put a premium on my non-contract status. At this point I'm not sure how much that's worth to me.

I know i'm going to have to pay full retail which works out good because i will have my upgrade next year since i've only had my iphone for 12 months.

But my friend who signed up for his iphone on the same day as me is getting an early upgrade discount. Which IMO is crazy because we went to AT&T store together on the same day and got our phones at the same time and we have the same rate plan also.

I'm a little pissed and not because i feel like im entitled to a free phone or discounted phone. But i feel that they need to make sure that the upgrade process is pretty much fair and it's really not for my situtation and to be honest i feel he shouldn't get an upgrade if i can't have one.

But i know AT&T doesn't care :D

This is what I've been telling people all along. Financially the smarter move is to sign the contract and take the subsidy. Would you leave $400 laying on the side of the road just because you had to cross the street to get it? Nope. You can always legally cancel the contract and pay the $325 ETF. It's the smarter move.

Edit: Also, I've been saying since I started in wireless back in 1990, this subsidy crap is just that...crap. We should just pay outright for the phones and be done w/ it. The entire thing causes way too much heartache and confusion for the average customer. What it does accomplish though is bringing down the initial cost of getting a wireless phone for those that couldn't afford it otherwise, but I'm not sure this is good either.

I Just call AT&T and they would not talk to me about the upgrade and told me i have to hit *NEW# and then i will receive the info. And then they told me to go to a store and waste more time b/c they would be able to help me a little bit further.
this is so stupid from AT&T
