I called Sprint again after running my Speed Tests and they said they would reprovision the device. I don't think that's going to do a damn thing and I'm getting more and more frustrated by the minute because it sounds like the tower near me might be a Sprint Partner 3G Carrier which is what's causing my upload to be throttled to 70 kbps or lower (per the Sprint Data Chart on their speeds).
However I'm certainly not roaming because there's a separate bill section for roaming data despite the fact that I'm unlimited.
So, I was told by technical support that I will be getting a better data speed when all the registration finishes within an hour. I'll re-run the speed tests but again, I'm not holding my breath.
The big question is if 70 kbps is a limitation of my Blackberry, or if my iPhone will also be restricted to 70 kbps too. That's just unacceptable speed, anyway you slice it.
I'm not sure what to do now. If I wait until my upgrade I go into another billing cycle and if I cancel mid-cycle I lose out on the remaining month. Not sure if Sprint pro-rates or not. I can upgrade on 1/18 or I can leave Sprint to AT&T by 1/11 for the new plan. Activation is waived with AT&T and I'd have the same exact features and plan I have now, excluding unlimited data, and I'd go down from 1500 minutes shared to 700 (but, we only use 200 per month and now we get rollover if we need it).
My ETF with Sprint is $50 per line (2 lines) regardless of whether or not I cancel NOW or wait until mid-April when my contract ends.
I know there are a bunch of posts on this thread that show people have used over 1 GB of data within the first week of their new iPhone, but I just realistically don't see how I can do that with the slower upload and download speeds I'm getting.
I opened Macrumors.com Mobile Site on my Blackberry over 3G and it took between 50 and 75 seconds to load, every time. Over wifi, luckily, this was around 10 and 15 seconds, every time. The Blackberry was actually FASTER rendering the Wifi page than my iPod Touch 1st Gen, but I think that's moreso because the Blackberry is newer.
Anyway, while Download is certainly an important factor, I can live with the advertised 3G speeds on an iPhone, but the 70 kbps upload's gotta go. I take lots of pictures as is with my Blackberry and upload (takes forever) to Facebook and other social sites and e-mail them to family/friends, and with the better quality of the iPhone pictures, I shudder at the thought of how long it would take to do a single file.
