"I'd rather wait and watch that one. I'm happy with my iPhone 8 — which is the same as the iPhone 7, which is the same as the iPhone 6, to me,"

While they’re nearly identical exterior designs, a lot has changed internally from the 6, to the 7 and to the 8. I feel like Woz of all people would appreciate the internals of a device more than how it looks.

I wonder if it’s because he has a plus and doesn’t want to lose any screen size (horizontal points)?

The reasoning Wozniak is saying makes it seem like he likes things that "look consistently similar", and is not one to want to try something really new...

Actually "no"

He gives his reason in that same article, but you omitted it in your copy/paste

"But Wozniak also said he was skeptical that the Face ID feature would work the way it is supposed to"

His mention of the iPhone 8 is just and observation of how the design has not changed in all those years.

Can you blame them? The iPhone 6 form factor has gone on to sell over 800 million units. People still bought it, and Apple knew they would. When I hear someone writing or talking about how the 6, 7 and 8 are different phones, I can't help but laugh at how Apple's marketing and branding is so successful that it can convince people of things that defy common sense.

Now, Apple has realized that the 6 form factor has run its course. Even without the announcement of the iPhone X, i still think iPhone 8 sales would have been anemic, although not as much as they have been with the iPhone X announced.

And this explains why he's not upgrading. It's a wait and see approach. He has no faith in Apple. Why should he, they don't have him to enlighten them :D

Considering he's usually seen purchasing the new iPhone this is more a stab at Apple than anything else.

Nice of him to have his better half beta test Face ID before he jumps on the notch.... I mean X

So Woz thinks 6, 6s, 7, and 8 are all the same?

There is essentially only four different form factors from iPhone -

Generation 1
iPhone
iPhone 3G
iPhone 3Gs

Generation 2
iPhone 4
iPhone 4s
iPhone 5
iPhone 5c
iPhone 5s
iPhone SE

Generation 3
iPhone 6
iPhone 6s
iPhone 7
iPhone 8

Generation 4
iPhone X

The 4 & 5 looked the same from the front. I think of the 4 still in its cocoon before the 5s/SE was its final metamorphosis. But people view it as a totally different design.

People just need to compare it to automobiles where each generational design goes beyond 2 years and is more like 4-5 years. Automobile manufacturers may change tail lights every year but it's usually considered part of the same gen.

Functionally though, all of those iphones do all the same things. to him, that's what matters.

he's been around the block long enough to know better than just looking at the spec sheet

Phones are getting to a point where theyre a commodity.

by your system i think the 4 and 5 are totally different platforms.
the 5 is a unibody aluminium chassis
the 4 is a stainless steel band onto which components are attached.

I mostly don’t disagree, especially for the average user. These phones are reaching a point where they can be used by most people for 2-3 years or more.

But Woz being someone very technical I still think he would appreciate how much the internals have improved. There’s 3 years of changes in there.

People are just way too hung up on how a phone looks. The 5s to 6, for example, was certainly no larger a leap in most regards than the 6 to 6s, or 6s to 7, or 7 to 8.

If the 6-8 are all the same, then the X is also just the same with a new display and no home button.

Woz was against the grain of the Apple ethos we know since it was just him and Steve. That seems to have always been the case and continues to be. At least if you believe what is written and said by those who should know. This is business as usual. I'm surprised he has an Apple phone at all.

I agree. People are so easily mislead based on looks.

GM/Pontiac/Buick/Cadillac/Chevrolet used this to maximum effect in years gone by. Nameplate engineering. Sell the same car as multiple models at differing prices by changing some lines on the sheet metal.

Apple changes some curves on the case and the masses are mindlessly impressed. They create their own bleeding edge chipset and the masses yawn.

But people view them differently because of a different back and slightly taller dimensions of the 5 because 3.5" to 4"? The 5 is like the 4s Plus to it.

It's weird where Apple goes with the rears.

Generation 1 (same front/profile)
Metal, Plastic, Plastic

Generation 2 (Same front/profile)
Glass, Glass, Metal, Plastic/Metal, Metal

Generation 3 (Same front/profile)
Metal, Metal, Metal, Glass

Generation 4
Glass

Best Gen 1 design - 2G
Best Gen 1 specs - 3Gs

Best Gen 2 design - 5s
Best Gen 2 specs - SE

Best Gen 3 design - 7 (matte black)
Best Gen 3 specs - 8 Plus

People need to realize that Apple is very conservative with design changes. Look at their MacBooks and iPads. Same for years.

Will be interesting if X is similar to the 4 where it starts with glass this year and next year before returning to metal or something else by 2019.

When he was dating Kathy Griffin, on her reality show, his net worth was stated as $1B. Mostly in Apple stock I assume (which has gone way up since then.)
He is listed everywhere as having a net worth of 100 million. Not sure how he is a secret billionaire

true. but technical guy or not, i bet he's not running out to buy the latest macbook pro every year despite the huge technical improvements. I think the iPhone is getting to that point of a product's life cycle.

the iPhone x is trying to break that mold, but he seems to not be buying it. whatever. i can see both views.

“Everywhere” being random guesses by people on the internet. On the Kathy Griffin show she stated his portfolio was worth $1B and Woz was sitting there and didn’t deny it.

I can understand his feelings on this. I am not rushing into this device either. I had a bent 6, so being an early adopter hasn't paid off.

I think I'm going to sit back and watch how this unfolds.

I’m only getting the X because I’ve had the same iPhone 6 Plus for over 3 years now lol and the screen is smashed. If I had anything newer I would have waited.

Woz was an engineer and developer. He knows there will be issues with version zero components. It maybe hardware or software or a million other things. The next batch will have things ironed out.
