I dont know why i get the feeling this is an April Fools Joke... surely apple cant make such a mistake.. I do believe you but i also find this shocking for such a high company as Apple
 
Having worked at Circuit City AND Best Buy all major retailers (Costco included) will repackage and re-shrink wrap products and sell them as new. Its extremely common. Most likely what happened was that someone had a return and the clerk didnt check so they had the warehouse reshrink it, then it was put on the shelf, the whole time noone knowing that the returned iPod was a brick in the box, then you bought it and saw that it was a 60gb.

I agree about the news station though. They would LOVE a story like that. The manager also needs to lose his job over automatically accusing you. I have zero tolerance for that type of thing. I can see where hes coming from BUT if he knows the company reshrink wraps he should give you the benefit of the doubt.
 
thanks for the support guys.. upon closer examination the shrink wrap does look a little shady.. almost like it's a little burnt on one corner... so I'm thinking you're right and costco may re-shrink these.

Perhaps I am ignorant, but I don't see what good the BBB ever does. They don't have any authority to do anything. Can anyone explain what good would come of contacting them?

I've had several good outcomes through the BBB.

A few years ago, I got the old bait-and-switch on a GBA SP at a Circuit City. After the BBB contacted Circuit City, someone from their legal department called me and sent me the GBA I was looking for.

Last year, I had my old bluetooth speakerphone removed from my Taurus to be placed in my brand new Mazda RX-8 at Best Buy. The installers claimed they knew what they were doing, but they tripped the security system and rendered my two-week old car inoperative. Going through the BBB, I was able to get the purchase price for the speakerphone. They were going to handle the towing and repair as well, but the Mazda dealership did both free for me.

A lot of the consumer stories on the local news are enterprised from BBB files. Also, they put out reports on bad businesses.

That is what I did when I purchased my 80GB Classic from Costco, prior to signing the credit card receipt I opened the box in front of the cashier to make sure that I got what I paid for.
 
Not unheard of...

Once, my friend bought a nano from currys, and all he got was some chinese fake with a huge screw in the back, but it was in all the proper pakaging etc... so it must have been a scam done on currys, who didnt bother to check it, so the store manager did have a point....

It can get the attention of the right people at a company. I was having difficulty with BB once and finally resorted to a BBB complaint. Was contacted the next day by a high ranking customer satisfaction employee. Too bad she screwed up too in trying to make things right :eek:

OP, being that the 60GB iPod is a Photo - it sounds like the box was re-shrinked post Apple...Since they don't even make them anymore, so it couldn't have been a manufacturing error, right? Did it look used?

I read that he recieved a Video iPod. But either way, it seems like this could not have been done on Apples part, only by a Cosco employee or someone like that.
 
Well, on the side of the OP if this was a scam I doubt he would have mentioned that it was different. The smart thing would have been to just say, I would like to return this. Chances are the people at Costco have no idea what they are looking at. Given it looks similar they would have taken it back no questions asked.

So either the OP is stupid or is telling the truth.

The BBB has always helped me as well. My bank lost a deposit I had made, causing several late fees and was also turned over to a collection agency demanding a $25 service fee. I kept calling the bank and wasn't getting anywhere so I reported them to the BBB. About a week later I got a letter from the president of the bank apologizing and told me to come in and it would all be sorted out, which it was.

Well, if you're trying to scam someone out of an iPod, why would you do it from the one store that's guaranteed to have a record of your name, address, SSN, credit card info, all your previous purchase and return history, etc? If you were going to do this, you'd buy it at Wal-Mart, and pay cash anoymously.
 
yea I thought about that afterward too.. there is no way the old lady at the return desk would have been able to read the serial number on the ipod... it's so tiny i can barely read it. she would have never noticed it was a different version if i didn't say something

but at the same time if i tried to return it that way and someone Did notice it was different... then i look REAL bad and i could see why they would think i was running a scam

Even walmart requires you to give your name and address when returning things. Even so, it makes no difference. Once the store has looked at it and accepted it, it is in their hands. They agreed to take the item as a return in its current state. Even if they came back and said... wait a minute! This isn't the right iPod, or whatever item. It is still in their hands. A scammer need only say, "well that is what I got and you guys checked it out."

Anyhow, good luck OP. If this iPod was indeed the product of a scam, it truly does suck that someone didn't consider such ramifications when doing what they did. Then again, they are a scammer...
 
to bad you didn't end up with a ipod touch, that would have been sweet. I'd go to the manager again and if that doesn't work, throw some punches.
 
Score one for the good guys. I went through the regional manager... ( I guessed his email address first initial.lastname@costco.com). I have to go Saturday to get it straightened out, but it looks like I'm going to get what I paid for.

You can always just compare the plastic wrap you got with the plastic wrap from a real box. If the plastic wrap is different then its proof that it was tampered with before the costco sticker was put on since theres no way you could have placed a costco sticker on your own plastic wrap.

Sorry, off topic, but accelerate (go faster)? I've not heard that word used in this context before. Escalate (go higher), or is this a dialectal difference or a translation issue? If so, which dialect/language?
