Yes it does because the problem can be easily taken care of at your local AT&T store, all they will do is give you a new SIM, unlike CDMA which the entire device is attached to an account.

No it does not. Because I can call sprint or verizon and do a MEID change to another phone and vice versa. They store the iphones ID's so they can't be changed.

I agree with JD914, Since I had the orginial iphone, and I changed my phone number and AT&T sent me a new sim card, and when I called they asked me to read the number off the sim card, and then I upgraded to the iphone 4 (AT&T) and when I activated it asked what the phone number was and I typed it in and then it brought up the IMEI, and the ICCID number, automaticly so AT&T dose attach a phone number to their iphones.

Scott,

You're not the only one. I noticed the wrong phone # came up when I activated my new iPhone that I received today as well. MEID on box matched paperwork, but the phone in the box didn't match. I'm on the phone with VZW now seeing what they can do.

Steve

Hey Steve, I saw your comment on CNN site, again sorry there are more of these mixups out there. Good Luck with VZW... keep us updated.

Update on my situation, the person from Chicago got home from work, tried to activate their new iPhone4 from Verizon... it failed. They called their cell# and I answer... I verified that they have the phone with my ESN# in wrong box as well. So I explained what I tried already... and suggested they go to Apple store as well.

AT&T iphones were attached to a Phone number

AT&T iPhones(All Versions) out of the box were NEVER attached to a number.

For example:
If you get shipped an iPhone and the included sim is a differ number than the one you expected or ported. You can easily just go to any ATT store and they will give you a sim with the correct number. You just put it in the iPhone and activate.

Today, got my new Verizon iPhone4. Great, ESN or MEID on the box matched the # on the Customer Receipt... however, those don't match the MEID on the actual iPhone in the sealed box. Nice, it's someone's phone in Chicago (312) area code. I find out after activating the phone and then calling Verizon to try and fix the problem, they can't say I need to return and order a new one.

So much for staying up until 4am pre-ordering this... I put an iReport on CNN, maybe it is happening to other people, a slip up at the factory?

Just FYI there was a user on TiPB forums that had the same issue. Maybe yours got swapped

Oh man talk about bad luck, maybe someone might come across this thread and put you in touch with someone higher up in verizon that will make this situation right. Good luck

Same thing happened to me. I ordered a 32 and got a 16 GB. I was able to activate the 16 GB. I don't know if this helped but after the wrong number was activated I did a restore and wipe the device out. A different number came up and i called Verizon back and they were able to activate the phone. I am getting a credit for the difference because I did not want to return and not get one after the 10th.

I hope this helps

Edit: never mind.

OP, sucks to hear about your issue. This is one of the problems with CDMA. I wonder though, what happens if you do a restore to your device? Is it still associated with the other number? If that's the case, wouldn't it be exclusively related to Verizon's system? Why exactly can't they just change the information in their system? I really doubt its a warranty issue; I'm sure someone high enough could get it done. I'd call again - and cite the CNN article this time.

Same here, Wrong verizon iPhone4 in box

My serial number is wrong and my MEID number is wrong none of them match the one's on the box! Idk how to fix!

Unbelievable that a huge tech company like Apple is putting phones in the wrong boxes. Don't they have some type of screening technology. I mean the boxes literally have 4 barcodes on them, you'd think they would be used to check that the right devices are in the right boxes. This might turn out to be a huge disaster if it's more widespread.

Blame verizon

I didn't try the restore device thing. But yes, I agree about Verizon should be able to change fix this in the system. I told them its like the initial assignment of the phone. They told me that could only be done at the 'factory'... And best way would be for both me and the other party to return phones, and get new ones. Hopefully correct this time. In some way, I think they are also worried about fraud. I mean they don't know for sure if I have both phones or stole it, I guess. More likely, just not setup to handle this condition from Customer Support Call Center.

Scott

Try a restore and when the my phone came back up there was a 0000000XXX number and when I called Verizon for the third time I got it activated. It took me three calls to Verizon before I talked to someone to activate. They said the warranty would get messed up if I activate the wrong phone. I would rather have the phone then try getting one on the 10th. Good luck keep us posted if the restore worked. Make sure you do not use the backup of the phone when you do the restore. Do a plain restore.

The JOY of using a wireless carrier that doesn't support SIM cards!

Mine is all Fixed!!

Got off the phone a little while ago. Verizon/Apple managed to reset the MEID for my account to the phone I actually have and got it working for me. :D

I can't complain too much since it got resolved in 1 day. It would have been nice if it hadn't happened, but they resolved it quicker than expected.

Scott, Give VZW a call back if you haven't gotten yours resolved yet.

I recommend you elevate your complaint because what they're saying doesn't make sense. The factory (aka Apple) doesn't have anything to do with phone number assignments - how could they? That's entirely up to Verizon. Verizon probably have some system that automatically designates MEID numbers to accounts.

I have no doubt that someone can change it - it's just a matter of getting past the point of "it's not my job" and finding someone who is a) competent, and b) willing to actually see it through. Edit: and as others have said, it seems that the issue can be resolved. I would just keep phoning; if you get someone who doesn't seem helpful just hang up and phone again.
