Right but Telsa stops at 250 miles, my gas guzzler gets more than that on a tank and refuels in 2 minutes. The point is limitation of technology.

The only fallout seems to be a vocal minority here on MR. Other than that by all objective indications, the path Apple has taken is successful.

No notch is not going happen. Flush camera is not going to happen. USB-C, that rumor is up for grabs. But that EU directive is still pending. 120hz refresh should happen, but who knows.

When it comes to cars, perhaps. There's no parallel between mileage limitation and screen/display/sensor design. Apple had already filed a patent for a camera hidden behind the display since 2007 and the current miniaturisation options are leaps and bounds ahead, providing ample room for experimentation on such a feature. Problem isn't the tech, it's that there's no one around there to push the envelope even to what looks like a saturated market.

I know the no-notch is not going to happen but not because it couldn't happen.

With the Apple Upgrade Plan, upgrading every year was nice. Just paying half the phone price, then giving it back to Apple wasn't all that bad. Could I have done better selling on E-Bay/Other Sites? Maybe but the risk goes way up.

My wife and I are planning on keeping our 11s for 2+ years after doing the Apple Upgrade Plan for the last few years. But we always say that... then that "You can upgrade now" email comes by and with a few clicks, we're signed up so easily.

I'm really, really quite curious about this model, albeit from the comfort zone of being content with the 11 Pro.

Corona or not, after establishing the grinding tik-tok-tok design refresh cadence and having not particularly tried to impress with new designs on any product category for years (except for the watch S4 and Mac Pro perhaps), they'd better flex their trillion dollar muscle when it comes to their flagship product.

One question remains: without Jony on board (regardless if he's insufferably vain, he's a rockstar designer in chief) who's responsible for the new designs and keeping a modicum of a consistent design language across products?

We all Apple lovers have to be thankful to Jony, all he did ... But truth be told ... the last years he wasn't adding value ... In fact, he is responsible for really big mistakes that had hurt Apple's image. Since the moment he left, everything went back on rails.

I would be so genuinely shocked if Apple ever put USB-C on their iPhones. I would also be so genuinely shocked if that EU directive ever went into effect—I wouldn’t even be that surprised if it passed, but lobbyists will do their damndest to make sure it never truly affects anything.

In Apple’s world, there are two connectors: Lightning, and USB-C. Lightning is meant for iPhones (and non-Pro iPads). USB-C is meant for everything else (and since they’re pushing the iPad Pro as a computer alternative, it makes sense that it’s the only iOS product with USB-C).

If you wanted to boil it down to its most shallow reason, I don’t think it’ll ever be on iPhones simply because Lightning connectors are thinner. There also happens to be far more Lightning connectors in the world now than there ever were 30-pin connectors (read: iPod sales were in the hundreds of millions; iPhone sales are in the billions). It’s not the crowded, fragmented market that the EU tries to paint it as. Virtually all smartphone owners can walk into a shop in their town and find the cable they need for charging or data transfer. And virtually all smartphone owners have at least one cable around that they’ve been reusing for years.

Circling around: imo, Lightning is probably here to stay until Apple really pushes people’s limits and takes all the connectors off the phone to begin with. ;)

5G has my eye, but being a long time Verizon user, who seems to be concentrating on mm 5G, and living in the suburbs, I wonder If 5G will even be available to me.
Yes it will google DSS Verizon will have nationwide low band as well as mmw by using DSS

The no notch is not going to happen, because, imo as I understand the general issues, the alternatives are worse than the notch. Didn't oneplus try with the camera under the display? How did that turn out for them?

You're assuming there are options to get rid of the notch and hide the electronics somewhere that doesn't increase the forehead or chin. That may not be the case and thus becomes a technical limitation vs a design limitation.

People are staggered in their upgrade cycles, so Apple releasing a phone every year doesn’t mean you get a new phone yearly.

Why is this so hard for people to understand? I buy a new iPhone literally every single year and have been since 2007.

The majority of people do not. People bought iPhones in 2014 who now want to upgrade. 2015, 2016, 2017 etc that now want to upgrade.

There’s demand every year. Not just from early adopters, but people who have owned hardware for several years.

I’ve been on the Program since 2016 and would process the upgrade online, but still sell the old phone via CraigsList and cancel AppleCare. Then I would use the money to pay off the old loan and have like $250-$350 in profit leftover. Which would take care of several payments on the new loan.

But now I think I’m just going to pay in full. 1 less recurring bill.

Maybe last iPhone to have Lightning port, 2021 we may finally see port less iPhone, a true future phone, no more wires

People don’t usually think beyond their own perspective and personal situation.

I will most likely upgrade from my 11 Pro Max to the 12 Pro Max. I'll speculate everything will be better but can Apple also make it lighter with longer battery life?

The new iPhones are waterproof. Does Apple's LIDAR setup work underwater?

I’m running my X into the ground before I upgrade again. It still does all I need and takes exceptional pictures. But I am sure some iPhone 6 users are finally looking to upgrade. Trust me, there is a lot of them out there.

This is where I’ve arrived, except that I’ll take advantage of Apple Card’s generous no-interest monthly payment plan for 1 year on any new iPhone purchase... It’s going to be great, no additional credit check, or needing to use a crappy Barclay card, no CitizensOne loan added every time on your credit account looking just... gross honestly, scummy somehow...

For the first time ever from Apple it’s been possibly to do monthly payments in a fair way with no additional cost beyond the one time entry fee of getting an Apple Card. Finally!

Yes people had been doing this, but tied through their carrier... I disliked that additional middle-man step.

Speaking of... how close are we to Apple becoming a cell provider themselves and being the new un-carrier the way T-Mobile was in the US for a while?

EVERYONE PANIC!!!!

Let’s drive up demand then we can all sell these at a premium, then apple will know how much to charge for next years phone.

They’re already forecasting a 20% shipping cut... making these exactly 20% more difficult to obtain now...

Better get your preorder reflexes ready... it’s gonna be an iPhone OG situation...

If demand is truly down 20%, and they've cut manufacturing 20%, then it would likely be roughly the same difficulty to get as before.

I wouldn't worry too much about it.

With all the COVID-19 facemasks going to be worn, plus I wear sunglasses with a less than stellar success rate on FaceID. Will the new phone have fingerprint auth?

Uh what? Your post makes no sense.

Most people buy every 3-4 years, but some happen to need one this year.

I’m currently typing on an iPhone 7 Plus.

Reread his post. That's not what he said.

Good point. I do have an Apple Card that I love. Might go that route next time.

I’m not sure if Apple will ever become a carrier, but I wouldn’t be surprised. When they started making their on SIM cards that’s when I was like “wow... first step”.

We’ll see.

Hopefully will be worth the wait....from sounds iPhone 12 will be available from September. Adding more hype for the pros.

With highest ever unemployment (and rising) and an economy fallIng into depression - and CoV infections continuing to march forever upwards- how relevant is a super fancy (unnecessary) electronic "toy" when the future looks so grim?

My guess: The 2020 iPhone SE will be their savior. The 12 series- a flop

Aside from C/19, This really isn’t news. If you look at the iPhone X, That officially launched in November 2017, which was two months later after iPhones typically launch in mid-September. And secondly, I don’t think ‘smart phones’ are generally on consumers minds, given the uncertainty of a lot of non-essential workers who are Decommission/furloughed.
