Services. Services. Services.

Eddy Cue is now the most important and influential person at Apple and a cert to be the next CEO.
Eddy Cue always walks on stage like he just teleported from a Las Vegas casino and is surprised to be where he is but rolls with it. I hope he's not the next CEO and they get someone more tech-minded.

Maybe Scott Forstall will come back and save the company. If only it needed saving . . . they have too much money to appeal to the people they won over when Steve Jobs first came back. Apple was at its best when it was on the ropes. They had an infusion of amazing software by acquiring NeXT. Now I can't even get Disk Utility to work and I prefer pretty much every third party app compared to Apple's equivalent offering.

I’m not sure why this warrants an event. Bundling the same old premium channels like hbo? Spending a billion on a few shows? Another failed attempt at a news app? This should be called the dumb and dumber event.

Netflix spends 15 billion a year on content. And apple thinks this is a Netflix killer??

I look for the tv app to get worse. Look for apple to nag you to sub to crap “premium”channels like the cable people do. None of this will make a dent in services revenue while being a loss profit wise.

Because Apple is announcing multiple subscription based services.

Somw people thinking Apple will hold a keynote for an announcement of the Mac Pro and iPhone SE2. The one tomorrow makes sense. It’s a big swing for Apple.

What does any of this crap have to do with tomorrow’s keynote?

I guess the question should rather be: What does tomorrow's event have to do with a company that used to be known for building professional computer equipment? Somewhere, something went terribly wrong in Cupertino.

Soon, the Apple data centers will host a myriad of Windows PCs for their streaming service for games.
The rest of the servers will be busy streaming video content to their consumption devices: AppleTV, iPad and iPhone.
The Mac will only remain for the few people who write software for those iOS gadgets.

Kiss your "professional" Mac equipment goodbye, because it has lost all relevance for this "new" media corporation.

I’d rather just give HBO $10/mo. directly in order to support their programming. Apple always wants such a ridiculous percentage of profits for doing basically nothing.
If you've been subscribed to HBO for more than a year through Apple, you're already giving them more than that. Apple's cut is only 15% after year 1 so that's $12.75/year for HBO.

Apple have a livestream running now at the Steve Jobs Theatre. It's also being reported by The Verge.

https://www.apple.com/apple-events/livestream/

The video is stylized to look like a CRT television set, and has been switching between a handful of different angles of the theater. Presently, the theater’s screen has a classic Apple screensaver on the screen, although some Twitter users have spotted some other things pop up on the screen, like a screenshot of an incoming call from Captain America himself, Chris Evans. It seems likely that that’s a nod to the shows that Apple is expected to unveil, as Evans is starring in one of them, an eight-episode thriller series called Defending Jacob.

Another Twitter user pointed out that this isn’t likely a live stream of the theater, noting that the company is probably in the midst of rehearsing for tomorrow’s event.

Apple wants the press to focus on nothing but its services after tomorrow's event. I'm confident there will be no hardware announcement tomorrow. Earliest you see the new Mac Pro is probably at WWDC

I still think something new (AirPower?) could come sometime this week but not be announced at the event - with the focus solely on Streaming Services. It will just be added to the store once iOS 12.2 is released. AirPods arrived with little to no fanfare.

Apple is the one calling it a Netflix killer. Did you read the article? It’s funny stuff. They could be. But need to get a lot more serious about content and quit worrying about bundling other channels.

I don’t think Apple is willing to go all in.

to other leading TV brands such as Sony and LG and to cheaper brands such as TCL and Sharp via Roku.

Since when is Sharp not one of the leading, premium brands?

Give us a source and I’ll believe you that they’ve actually said that.

Apple of 1980 is not the Apple of today. Many companies change focus. Less and less people buy dedicated computers or laptops.

Keep hoping they release an updated Mac Pro for the 300 people who still want one

It’s why Apple released the AirPods, iPads and bands last week. Tomorrow will be all services and maaaaaaybe the Air Power

Oh good! Tim, I can help. This is for your next briefing:

The things that would benefit Apple would be:
- an optimized, less confusing GUI
- stable software
- great hardware (including for pros)

The things that would threaten Apple are:
- a portfolio that is too big to handle
- buggy software
- little innovation
- bad customer service

Love, an Apple Customer.
Apple has great hardware, stable software, simple to use, and all their products can fit on a table.

You failing to recognize innnovation doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

Because apple has a very valuable product, a loyal customer that is willing to spend money.

Don’t give me wrong I understand why HBO would join the Apple thing… But I would think they would simultaneously lower the price of their direct offering to directly compete with it as well

Just FYI, Tim Cook is probably not spending his Sunday perusing the MR forums in hopes of getting advice on how to run Apple from some anonymous stranger who can barely run his own life.

Sitting in the UK, so none of the above is especially interesting to me.

Even if I were in the USA, I don’t think I’d be interested.

Wake me up in time for WWDC.

What we need is an à la carte service based on number of shows. For example, $10/month can access 10 different shows regardless of network (though I'm sure tiers would be needed). I have zero interest in 99% of what I have available to me through conventional subscription services.

Cable channels used to be (and still are sort of) bundled together. You couldn’t just get ESPN or Comedy Central, you had to get all the channels. Now we can get some networks directly, but we have to pay for all their shows.

I’d be happy paying per entertainer. If you find someone you like you pay an monthly or annual fee to support them. Anything they are involved with you get to watch. As they get more popular they start to cost more, and likewise as they become less popular they go down. Grandfather people into rates and let them say, “hmmm I liked this actress in that show I always watch I’ll start to follow her”. Than Hollywood says, “hey people are following her, let’s give her more content and see if it translates to money.”

Oh crap, I just invented a version of YouTube where we pay upfront.
