The extra money you pay is because it looks better. And you also get a product that everyone and his mother doesn't have, walk into Starbucks or on a train or at an Airport, its a sea of white and Apple logos nowdays.

Plus in my opinion the white looks cheap and tacky.

I'm really not trying to convince you of anything. If you understand that Apple is a business, and you understand that Apple is in it to make money...and you understand that she knew she was paying for a colour and did anyways...Why did you post about how she got screwed?

Perhaps you should go back to my original post and read it again.

My question for the forum was if this was really the current state of the B vs W MacBook. My knowledge is a little old, but I'm pretty sure that the black one used to offer something the white one did not.

I then made an off handed comment that my friend, when buying her very first Mac from the Apple store felt a little ripped off when she realized she paid $100 more for a color she could have cared less about.

I was personally caught off my guard when she figured out she bought the top end MacBook, but then asked me if it was true she could have gotten a White one speced the same for less.

Oh well. Her fault. But again, the thread has taken a jump in a different direction as people decided to respond solely to my comment about her feeling a little ripped off. Remember that this is her first Mac and she's not used to paying $100 for a color option on a computer. However, my original comment was still not about how Apple ripped her off (I never placed the blame on Apple), but about whether Apple was no longer distinguishing between the W and B MacBooks...You know, outside of that $100 ;)

Cheers,
~Earendil

ps
as a side note, "ripped off" or "screwed" is a relative word, without an exact definition in our great english language. A $100 "woopsie" as a percentage of gross income could feel like a "bummer" to one person, and "life is over" to another. There, feel free to argue semantics with me in a PM if you like :)

Can we please drop the White vs Black as a good deal and if it's worth it?
That was never the original question, and if people want to debate that one there are plenty of other threads for that.

That said, my question is answered I think, so feel free to hijack the thread and take it where ever.

Cheers :)

I never go refurb when buying computers. Nothing like being the first to turn the computer on the first time and knowing there is no dust or scratches anywhere on it. I don't care how much money a refurb costs.

I always go refurb when buying Apple computers. Nothing like knowing a certified technician made sure the computer will turn on the first time I get it, knowing its in like new condition, and comes with the same warranty. I don't care how much more money a new one costs...

I prefer the white. After using the Black one for a few days, all those smudges and things look nasty. Plus after a year or so the trackpad looks like *****.

Some people buy cars or motorcycles and then pay $3,000 to $10,000 or more for a custom paint job.... and we're worried about $100???? LOL

I bought three new MacBooks in the fall of 2006 when the Core2Duo processors were introduced. Two white ones with the SuperDrive and one BlackBook. My wife asked why the black one was more, and I explained it as the "black tax" for a little extra style. I was replacing a much beloved 12" PB with a MacBook, so I got the black one knowing I was paying a premium for style. The larger hard drive was a bonus.

Actually, the thread title should be:
Wtf is with the slackers who can't even look up the specs before buying something?

The specs are listed clearly on apple.com
It takes all of 30 seconds to click on Mac, MacBook, Specs
(or 5 seconds if you type in the URL directly)

How about you read my first post again, look for the question marks, and look at my previous two posts.
If you actually read the thread, you will find (off topic) discussion on the apple.com layout for the specs.

She lost $100? Because she bought a better computer, with better specs, that she asked for?

That's like saying that she lost $800 when she could have gotten a PC with similar specs.

That's a terrible comparison. BlackBook to white MacBook is $100 for difference in color.

PC to Mac is $800 for a far better OS with far better preinstalled software.

You have got to be kidding me...

You have got to be kidding me...

Not kidding at all! Anyone who buys a MacBook Black pays $100 more for the color. A simple comparison of specs on the Apple Store site will show this plainly. Anyone who shops responsibly would have known this before making a purchase. It's not a rip-off... it's an option, that comes at a price. And they're complaining about it?

Thank you for quoting me again at the end of your post. It works really well.
You missed the entire point. First, I'd suggest looking up the word "Semantics". Second, go back and read the only two question I put forth in my initial post. Oh what the heck, let me help you with that one too...

So you pay $100 for a black painted computer?
Am I missing an important spec here?
To which the answers have been given, they are simple,
"Yes", and "No". My case is closed.
No one is complaining. And I have already state that I think she should have done a little more research. You are preaching to the choir.

Now, I'm going to stop feeding the trolls, and unless anyone has some legit questions for me, or comments pertaining to the point of the original post, I'm out.

Parting comment for fun: It actually is NOT made clear on the Apple website. If you go to the Apple store and want the best laptop Apple has for $1500, you are going to go with the Black one because it appears to be the better model. It is not Obvious that the white one is just as good as it. If Apple wanted to make it obvious, than the color would be a $100 option just like the HD and RAM.
"Easy to prove" and "obvious" are not synonymous.

Peace out.

Material vs. Color

Having owned the white Macbook I realized that you're not so much paying for the color but for the material on the laptop. The Black matte material is much less prone to scratching than the glossy White and hence worth more in my opinion being someone who hates for their laptop to look all beat up. I had the white MacBook for 3 mths and couldn't stop the dirt from accumulating on the palmrests as well or the scratches on the outside so I gave up, sold it and got a Black one.

Having never owned either, that is a factor I've never known or heard.
Thanks for the input duky!
It's not actually a different material though, right? Just a different finish?

I have had both, but switched to black too. I have heard that the black is a different material. I have heard that it is the same too. It sure seems like a different material and it does resist scratches and it is easier to hold and handle. And I said "and" three times...

Perhaps she preferred the black to the white? I know I do (well I still don't really like either MacBook). If it was personal preference then I don't see how she was "screwed" the employees probably assumed that if you come to them asking for a black MacBook thats what you want. Plus I don't think you can get them to upgrade the HDD in store you have to DIY or custom order it online.

You wouldn't expect this from a car dealership. The Red one has a better engine in it, but you miss the littler Asterick that says you can get the White one, swap the engines, and get it for less?

Actually its exactly what I expect from a car dealership. With cars solid paint is included in the price, but if you want metallic or pearlescent paint you have to pay extra...

Besides if she really feels ripped off for not doing her homework, she can take it back. Apple have a 14 day return policy that she can use if she is not happy in any way.

Color v/ Material

Yeah I'm not sure if it's a diff material or just a diff finish. Either way, I think it's better quality so I guess perhaps you can look at the price diff that way.

If the white didn't yellow and show dirt easily I'd have gone for white. I got black for practical purposes really, maybe a few other blackbook purchasers thought like me.
I couldn't care about status symbols and the like, I seldom to never take it out and I think my GF'd love me either way =)
