I don't think that's true. You're allowed to buy the kits from authorised Apple resellers and and are allowed to install it yourself. That's what I did.
 
I got mine from an authorised Apple Reseller here in Spain and installed it myself. I sincerely doubt that it would void the warranty.
 
are there really any installation fees? i thought that was included when you bought the module.

i just got mine a couple week ago, and had them install it at the store. yes, i had to lug the beast in, but that wasn't that big of a deal...

took 'em all of 10 minutes or so.

You don't need to bring it to Apple to have them install it.

A few weeks back, I bought the Airport card at my local Apple store and came home and installed it myself. Took about 10 minutes: plug the card into the board, connect two wires, slide two drive bays back in, done.
