WWDC 2006 Keynote Coverage

Hahaha, I love Apple and their humorous banners! They always think of something funny. I can't wait to hear Steve's random cracks on Windows while giving his keynote. The crowd always gets a kick out of them. :p

Just about all companies give there product a code name and then a release name once it's ready for the retail stores or a public beta like you see windows vista.

Indeed. I sort of forget, but at what point did Apple decide to start making the "code names" part of the official name of the commercial product? I'm thinking it must have been with 10.2 (I don't remember them publicizing Cheetah as the name of 10.0 or Puma as the name of 10.1).

I guess it's almost a necessity given the unique product naming issues with OS X. On one hand, Apple is basically limited to doing single-point version increases with each update to OS X (because if they actually were to jump from 10.x to, say, 11.0, the OS X name would no longer mean anything). But if you just advertise "Mac OS X 10.5", it's hard to get people too excited about that. So I guess it makes sense for Apple to go ahead and really push the cat codename stuff as the final product name. Also, probably easier for the average consumer to just remember Jaguar, Panther, Tiger, Leopard, etc. than individual version numbers.
 
I will be surprised if Vista comes out with most features in leopard, even if they are hacked wanna be copies. They have done it before and with the preview Apple will just give them one more chance to do it. What I don't think they will be able to copy is the features in the iApps that will come out or core video effects. Well, not without raising the requirements to run vista yet again.

I know Apple has the balls, but that's asking for it. Leopard better be good incredible.

Panther?

Let me steer this off topic real quick. I have read before that Apple has two OS teams so "in theory" Leopard would, in fact, be Panther 2.0 and 10.7 would be Tiger 2.0. Again, in theory… Can someone clear that up?

I became a hard core Mac user after Panther was released. I was wondering if Apple took stabs at Microsoft when they were introducing Panther. :confused:

Nothing they haven't done before. Like the "Redmond, start your photocopiers" thing for Tiger. And Redmond did exactly that, it seems. ;)

They did at WWDC '04 (when Tiger was introduced) with slogans like "Redmond, Start Your Photocopiers" and the word "Longhorn" in the Spotlight search field. ;)
 
This is all so yummy! I'm quite excited. I've been preparing for WWDC big time....i've got the MR Live site as my homepage, the MR contributors' updates coming to my mobile, i've been watching all the old Stevenotes just to get all psyched up!

My cup runneth over with excitement.

Too bad I'll be in class all day tomorrow and won't get the minute by minute MR coverage...unless I bring my macbook to class with me. :D

haha! Yea I'm going to be glued to my Macbook watching the updates and jumping with excitement when something is announced :D

Then when the online video comes up on the apple website ill be watching it start to finish and nobody will be able to bother me lol :p

No offense, my friend, but I'm glad Apple isn't taking any marketing cues from readers of MacRumors. ;)
 
I'm at work tomorrow too, but seeing as my 'boss'/co-worker is also a huge Apple fanboy, and since the Keynote starts at noon local (CDST) I'm expecting that we'll fire up macrumorslive and eat lunch whilst get text updates. Too bad there's no live video tho...
 
I hope this one is as fun and entertaining as MWSF 06 was, what with Paul otellini coming out in the intel bunny rabbit suit and delivering the chip so to speak :rolleyes:
