Has there been another developer conference that required a lottery for tickets?

Apple. Dying. Doomed and such
And why other developer conference don't need lottery system? If WWDC is just so expensive and unpopular, why ****** they want a lottery system to sell the ticket? They can just hang it as a premium product in online Apple Store and it will be sold out right before the conference starts.

Why is it so expensive?
(I understand its a week full of useful things for devs)

Skipping over the early access to betas and the sessions:

  • Colleague networking
  • Labs to test the new features
  • Potential to have aided access to roll the new tech into your app
  • Direct access to Apple Engineers, Evangelists, QA, PMs
  • A trip to the Apple campus Shop (usually with discount)
  • Parties with product Demos from many companies
  • Lunch time exclusive sessions with names: previous guests include
    • J.J. Abrams
    • Levar Burton
    • Douglas Addams
  • A chance for any dev over 35 to feel obscenely old
  • A chance for any dev over 35 to see friends in Apple and the industry that they don't usually
So... Shrug... I guess you're just paying for a ticket.

(10 time attendee. Clear lucite backpacks one year. Barbie goes dev. One year there were iSight cameras for all attendees)

It seems the majority of people think $1599 is a lot of money for what it is. It's not just the event. You get to spend time with Apple developers, go to sessions and much more.

and what happens to the ones who don't win ?

Apple listens to their their customers but APple gets to choose who attends a conference meant for anyone (at least that's how it used to be)

Personally, u have a better chance with Powerball. u may not be a winner, but at least u probably will get something, even if its small change.

I wonder how many people have been selected this time, is it more than last year? Considering the event will be held at the Bill Civic Auditorium (the same place they unvailed the iPhone 6s, iPad Pro and Apple TV 4) and that building is huge i'm guessing they are allowing more people to attend this year, otherwise why host it at that venue?

The lottery system is more fair than the "hope you wrote a good bot to monitor the WWDC page for changes and purchase tickets" that it was turning into. I believe the last year before the lottery it sold out in something like 7 minutes.

Never been to Apple's but been to other companies. The place isn't cheap to rent and just to run the whole show is crazy. There is a lot going on behind the scene. As for customers, there are session and guest speakers https://developer.apple.com/wwdc/schedule/

Also that price is not terribly out of line with other big tech conferences (for better or worse).

Why buy an expansive lottery ticket when you can watch it for free on Apple.com?

Do they actually stream everything during that week-long schedule of discussions/presentations? That would be cool if so.

Otherwise, it's a nice opportunity to get away from work for a week and enjoy the festivities (while your company foots the bill, no less, which is probably the case for a sizable number of attendees).

It actually sold out in 30 seconds (2013) - for the same price as now. Really it is unbelievably cheap - everything from the one to one labs with Apple developers, meeting other developers to free breakfast & lunches and parties by themselves are worth more.

What has started making it expensive is San Fransisco hotel prices: they are higher than even Manhattan - $400 a night (well more than the conference cost) for a decent room in the same area as Moscone.

Why would you pay that much for a ticket?
Because that's what it costs?

Only in Fanboy land can the "winner" of a lottery be so lucky as to win the right to pay over a grand to attend an event. LOL ....
Ah, yes, reactionary commentary that discounts the context and essentially anything else from actual reality, with a "LOL" thrown in for a good measure.

My hotel is .3mi from Moscone and $120/night. Last time I went I stayed with a friend who's company put him up in a $350/night hotel over looking Yuerba Buena Gardens.

I'm watching it on my computer = $ 0.00 spent ;) ⬅️

If it the same as last year, only the sessions in Presidio. Also, no labs.

I've never seen so many happy to "win" a $1,500 charge to WWDC. Except, I'd go at least once in my life if I had the funds. Good thing this ticket is tax deductible for the professional developers!
