It’s clearly designed to use the virtual keyboard as a crutch when voice input isn‘t enough. But you’re supposed to use a real keyboard when working/typing more than a quick message. text input paradig is going to shift as visionOS is adopted, and I won’t be surprised if the end result is something totally different than what has been imagined yet.
I would love to see a virtual keyboard. You would have it appear virtually on a flat surface, and Vision Pro just registering keystrokes from a combination of visual input and sound waves.

On the other hand, if a Vision Pro has that capability built in, the potential for hackers to come up with malware that might hijack it and use it to decode someone else's virtual keystrokes – or real ones, on an actual keyboard –, albeit from a different POV, will definitely be there for the taking. Oof.

Then again, considering the advance of technology, the same could be said for any other virtual input method, unless you could customize it (kind of like homebanking apps already do, by randomizing PIN input matrices). And it's not like hackers aren't doing that already through video and eavesdropping IRL anyway.

As impressive as their presentation was, showing a room’s worth of floating screens and apps up and accessible, what I do question is whether we users, or the system itself, will get overwhelmed with so many available options/distractions?
I have 4 screens on my desk right now facing me, not including my iPhone which thankfully generally stays screen-down, and I don’t want to have even more screens up reminding me of all the things I have to do.

The other issue, which I don’t think they really got into (I only watched some of the presentation - since I had 3 other screens worth of things to do) is what typing on a keyboard floating in space is going to be like. Sure, in sci-fi movies it seems natural for people to air-touch screens or keyboards, but I can’t imagine doing hours of work typing while holding your arms and hands out unsupported. Sure, you could type on a desk or some other flat panel, but then why not just have a real physical keyboard?
I'm guessing that's where Spaces/some AR variant of Stage Manager comes in. Heck, even if the implementation is, as of now, absolute crap for seasoned macOS users, the name Stage Manager is actually starting to make a bit more sense. And, in a way, Apple UI designers had been gravitating towards this kind of thing for a long time now, ever since the original Time Machine interface, the CoverFlow acquisition, etc.… I would love to see CoverFlow make a comeback in visionOS and to be able to physically flick through stuff in space. They still have those patents and may resuscitate them at any moment. Edit: well, it seems they were embroiled in a patent lawsuit, that's why it's gone; in any case, if this new OS does stick, they should definitely buy out the patent holder/troll outright and bring it back.

This has flop written all over it. That said I’ll grab one because I want too and I can easily afford it.

Apple needs something to replace Siri. That should be this focus.

There are several pretty big hurdles to get over if the idea is going to be voice control/dictation with this OS. The first is it almost forces a user to be solitary so that whatever they are saying doesn’t disturb those around them. That might be great for someone working remote at home, but not so much for someone in an office.

Heck, I know plenty of people who won’t even call someone or leave a message on voicemail because they don’t like to talk.

The other even bigger issue is that a lot of people just don’t like speaking instructions. Part of the issue can be people being uncomfortable with hearing their own voice, but it’s also true that speaking without getting feedback from someone else, like we get in a typical conversation, is much more difficult to carry on for more than very short durations…unless of course the person is used to talking to themselves.

This conversational style of input could be the solution, similar to how the OS in the movie Her sort of worked. With AI progressing the way it is, this could be a great way to work with an OS, if you can get around the challenge of lots of people talking out loud in an office or academic setting.

Definitely seems like it's mostly to replace multi display setups and content consumption role of the iPad/TV for now. Both cases it can excel at for sure. But as with any new paradigm, the real "killer" use cases won't be clear until devs and consumers get to play with it for a while.
I didn't pay close attention to the degree of Vision Pro OS likeness to a combination of iPad/tvOS but that sounds about what we were exposed to when we first tutored on what it offered during keynote. I can't imagine that its offers any more software interface depth of IPadOS apps at best given how you control the OS interface environment with you hands. Perhaps that will be all we can expect for now, and they didn't want it to be difficult to use by consumers when it arrives next year.

The Vision Pro announcement echoes the iPhone unveiling in that “it uses the best pointing device that exists - your fingers”. It’s bold to attempt perfecting a new input paradigm, and build an entire product platform on it. The iPhone did this with multitouch & gestures, can the Vision Pro live up to such lofty expectations?

The BIG MISS for me, was a live demo. Steve Jobs loved to show, in real time, exactly how the experience ‘feels like magic’. They said the word ‘magic’ many times in the slickly produced keynote videos, but I never got a sense of what it’s like to actually, just use the Vision Pro. Perhaps the working UI isn’t ready for such showcasing, or the ‘magic’ simply can’t be felt in a 2D presentation - but they will need to do better at convincing people through a 2D screen, why an immersive 3D face-screen is indispensably better.

Believe me, I’m the last guy to board the “talk to my computer” train. Great on Star Trek, unless in reality. But I type on the idiotically small iPhone “keyboard” or the equally impossible to use iPad “keyboard” everyday, so responding to a text by typing on any tabletop isn’t at all a stretch. And pulling out a keyboard while at work/connected to your Mac is hardly a burden. Someday maybe there will be a newer/better interface, but for now VisionOS revolutionizes how we see computing not how we provide input.

Exactly. It’s an iPad and large display killer right now. Extends your mac and makes content consumption super immersive. The rest is potential we won’t understand until years later. I don’t think most people in 2005, 2007 or even 2009 could quite have predicted where smartphones would go. They were clearly the next step in computing, but what that next step would look like 15 years later was more nebulous. Let devs play with the hardware/software and come up with the next big thing. Current VR has been hamstrung by the assumption it’s a gaming device, but I’m not at all sure that’s where VR shines. Apple seems to be on the right track by focusing on mixing/augmenting reality not escaping it.

Cycling workout on iPhone? Wtf?
YES!

Apple is looking to leverage their iPhone's + Apple Watch + Bluetooth LE cycle adapters to replace the dedicated Cycling computer!

Brighter display,
More functionality - including fall detection or accident detection where even MIPS on a helmet would be limited (it doesn't log nor send your medical data specifically nor properly alert your emergency contacts - heck maybe even your insurance company in the future).
Vital signs is also logged to be send in case of an emergency.
ability to call 911 right away.

Many experienced cyclists that you see on the road - those with the ridiculous tight shorts, shirts etc may not even carry a cellphone on their rides and many don't use Apple Watch for various reasons - amongst them battery life and best in class complications on Fenix etc. Thus not having ability for cellular on watches. I've seen one in particular get smacked 4 lanes over in T-Bone fashion. I called 911 amongst many others in that area that saw it. I was SUPER shocked buddy was not only moving trying to stand up (cautioned against that by 5 others incl me) but also mentally coherent)! This was his LUCKY day or some angel was PRAYING for his ass!

So yeah this can improve data on the screen including a background ever present Map!
Can use FaceID to light up the screen and brightness as its locked while cycling to further face battery power - or implement head tracking in AirPods gen 3/AirPods Pro so that if you tile your head down the screen brightens up.

I already have something similar:

Under the mount you can get a tiny adapter to mount the action camera of your choice:

^ huge benefit to bike lane cut offs or ******s that are using their cars to threaten your life or just take it!

Case for the iPhone that works with the mount. I'd recommend this vs just the M3 adhesive universal adapter.

I predicted a possible way of Apple implementing Mental health as a journal or quick entry, even evolving it just last week here;

Well laid out. Yet also consider many Accessibility features needed by 'people who might otherwise struggle to use its standard interface for one reason or another' could not just be 'physically' limited but 'mentally' constrained.

example: MS affects motor control thus you'll have difficulty in controlling the interface. Some people are legally blind and not from physical reason (usually but some it's a disconnect somewhere within the cranium). Also consider some are born with challenges that may 'appear physical' in nature yet the root of the challenges is not.

As we begin to understand mental health more (ADD, ADHD, BPD) we'll start to see a connection where mental health needs may also be considered accessibility needs. Those I mentioned in this paragraph, many with severe symptoms LOVE the home button as its a mnemonic or fidget relaxation when using iPhone 8/SE/7/6/6S/5S etc.

We know Apple takes incredible care for accessibility features in all their devices and OS - leaps and bounds further than Android or Windows (to some degree).

While I agree with you, and I doubt mental health will be in accessibility - hopefully you can see some are related. Mental health needs most likely will be part of the Health app (Apple is moving Health to be re-branded Fitness I think).

Cheers.

While this is a great use case you’re doing via third party, and possible what Apple will do in part I don’t think this is the primary goal.

In this day and age of so many diagnosed with mental illness in the western world since Pandemic 2020 (especially amongst youth) .. I think this is more catered to those either experience episodes without their mental health situation or for those unaware they have such experiences.

This could have some algorithms to early identification and help with entries for journal logs. Heart rate, blood pressure spikes while at rest or tracking if certain locations “may” trigger a prompt for a journal entry log.

Maybe quick 3 choice drop down selections that get refined as you go through or not
. Then an area for manual text journal or voice to text entry.

Moreover for youth underage say 19/13 with parental controls enabled could help alert a parent - maybe engage an FaceID call for certain peak thresholds when reached. Should the parent be in a meeting at work then a trusted health care pro or friends or kids help line.

Someone on twitter requested a great feature where FaceID calls just ring untill hung up or unanswered so why not have a FaceID visual voicemail recording!? In the above paragraph brainstorm to have (corrected by removing: I have) THIS would be bomb! Something not shareable to protect a child’s trust and identity. This would go to help a child within parental controls have their own control - a real life growth lesson which is great.

In South America I’ve heard youth before 13 already have their own psychologist. And it’s perceived normal and to not have one it’s viewed as insanity. Polar opposite to the western world. Very interesting.

Details of my brain-storm from last week in the second quote above underlined were not matched nor detailed but something further down the line could be implemented.

This was after being super skeptical months ago when it was first accounted.

Mental health mental shmealth
Hmm. Kinda ignorant, as most people in the western world typically are about mental health. Many believe the 'stop whining' yet as we've seen silence and lack of communication can lead to some dire consequences that many others pay the price for.

Not related to mental health:
Your daughter has nobody to talk to about her sexual urges or encounters with guys in high-school and wants to go all the way. Parents or other family doesn't talk. 3months or 5 months later she cannot hide the bump. Guy has moved or his parents kept quite moved etc, Guess who's to deal with a pregnant daughter with grandkid on the way?

Now consider mental health from a kid emotionally connected and emotionally super sensitive. Too much bullying today, in the USA leads to a high school shooting. Let's pray nobody's kids are at such a shooting on these boards. When I was in Gr 5 bullying was normal - I hated it. 1 kid loved to show off how great his WWF grip was (think Ultimate Warrior against Iron Sheik). I was in his grip. I couldn't breathe. I had train-track metal braces on (the is early 80's). Almost passing out I bit him - REALLY HARD. Passing out momentarily I didn't let go - or couldn't because of my braces I'm really not sure.

I met the guy just 4 years ago, high school get-together with a few friends, all the age of 46. I didn't remember until at a VERY lively bar he jumps up and shouts 'And YOU ... you damn Tasmanian Devil! You BIT me! You SCARRED me for life!' and lifted his shirt. Now a 10yr olds mouth isn't big to cause bit marks. But when you get older they spread out. CLEAR as day each of my teeth bite shapes were imbedded into his side gut. The entire bar was silent for an aching moment. 'Dude you actually remember that?! I'm sorry but man I tried tapping out an couldn't' breath my face was in your gut smelling your flesh what else was I to do being bullied" entire bare LAUGHED. We all did and all forgiving. It could've been worse.

Our Gr 10 teacher had long talks with me to deal with my anger then. Didn't work until the final bully Gr 7 - broke his notes in 2 places all from watching uppercuts of Heavy-Weight and Middle-weight boxers with my dad. Judo classes wasn't gonna work against 8 guys. That uppercut changed their minds.

At 21 at a bar one of those old middle-school bully's tried to start **** with me and his new crew against me at a pool hall with 2 of my friends. That pool stick came half an inch of his nose so quick he didn't even get 1 step from standing still after his verbal threat! He pissed his pants before I was told to leave a banned.

Bullied kids don't play games the older they get. Bullying causes mental health issues.

Mental health - good
DEFINITELY Good!

BPD is the toughest to diagnose and even harder to treat! I don't think Apple has BPD in its radar just yet.

Still this is a GREAT start.

Apple is now our mom.

Same rhetoric was stated when ScreenTime was pushed by one of Apple's largest investment funds leader. At first I thought really we need this? Why can't parents do their jobs?!

Because the majority of students influences after Gr6 is from their peers NOT from their hard working parents. Those that are wealthy are even MORE absent. Thinking giving expensive gifts will guide and glue their kids to their every word yet it ONLY increases the issue.

Lack of maintained and structured communication amongst home and core family members is what lead to super sensitive gen Y and Z's that believe everything belongs to them - just like the baby boomers that were handed everything in a blanket of pure assurance and security.

Today's society has many mothers working 8-6 just like many fathers do.
They all go a mortgage to pay off as the saying goes.
When your kids gets beat to hell or sexually assaulted seems that ONLY THEN will most parents in western world will get involved.
That or if the kid plays in a band with the same instrument as one parent or in a school team sport as another with possible nationals competition! or lil-girls are dressed up like super-models with 80/90's glam-rock big-hair to perform in some nut-crazy beauty contest: they're just 4-8 yrs OLD!!! GROSSS!
(notice that Varsity Jackets are NO LONGER a thing?!)

yeah BIG possibility for mental illness to develop so if mom's and dad's are not fulfilling their roles somebody has to!

Ugh. These doesn’t seem good for mental health IMO. Just makes people more narcissistic.
Maybe ... but it's better than the alternative:
gone un-diagnosed,
lack of communication - even if not mental illness some youth really need an outlet to communicate to - especially if they don't fit in.

I sincerely hope this does NOT lead to rapid diagnosis of anything. This really needs to be carefully thought out by Apple - if not could lead to a MAJOR lawsuit I don't think EVEN their lawyers are ready for.

its a good move, but careful baby steps with implementation.

Nah, man, I was just saying that we've no mental health left at this point, without actually saying it. Of course it's important!

I get all of that for road biking - I'm a mountain biker and I would never ever strap my iPhone to the bike ...

Sounds like you're a casual mountain biker.

I know a few that actually do strap their cellphones (iPhones, Samsung's etc) during their cross country, downhills etc. Their phones are in a protected hard+rubber armour case that then locks to the mount. Their human bodies suffer more damage than the bikes which suffer more damage than the dirt/mud/tree stumps, than more than the phone - in that order daily during each summer. Of all 8 guys non ever needed repairs or replacements on their phones.
