TiVo & Apple

Back to the resurrected TiVo rumor. A year ago select Apple stores began selling TiVo (Article here). TiVo recently released their Hi-Def DVR but only available through DirecTV. TiVo continues to say that they have no plans to release an HD-compatible standalone DVR. Apple on the other hand seems to be all about HD lately with a new version of Final Cut, a new codec and new DVI HD display's on the horizon. What if, for the last year - TiVo and Apple were secretly working together on the first standalone Hi-Def TiVo DVR?

So here's how to play this thing...

AAPL - buy on the hype, sell on the news.

If in fact there's no iMac @ WWDC, then the analysts will be left holding the bag (temporarily) on their "promise" of new (G5) iMacs @ WWDC and their $39 price target will seem a little further into the future because the new G5 iMac revenues (driven by all that pent-up demand) won't be flowing freely just yet. Of course, the stock price is all about discounted cash flow. If the cash flow is further into the future, then the stock will go down. Apple's stock down 4% Monday. Buy slightly out of the money puts on Friday. Likely you'll see a 12% return 3 days. (Annualize THAT!) ;)

TIVO - buy Friday on the anticipation of news on Monday.

Granted it is an extreme longshot that Apple would announce a TiVo partnership (for the same reason they cite for the iMac...no video feed ), but TiVo is just off its 52-week low.

Even if nothing happens, TiVo is adding customers at a pretty torrid pace. Granted most of them are DirecTV and Murdoch's probably going to drop them like a rock once he gets a replacement product ready, but who knows. TiVo is such a good service (had it since 2001) with such loyal customers (sound familiar?) that "it just might work". Gotta add a little excitement to your life, baby!

MSFT (ugh)

One word for you: Asymptote! (look at the 5-year chart)

(run away! run away!)

I don't own a TiVo, but I do own a 50" Toshiba HDTV, and with the slim (but growing) choice of Hi-Def programs I dream of an HD DVR. For a while I was recording HDTV on my G5 with Apple's Virtual DVHS. Then 5C data encryption kicked in on Comcast and now I can't even do that. A Hi-Def DVR would be sweet. Not sure how it would benefit me if Apple did it as opposed to anyone else, but they are always good at innovation, so I would dig a surprise ;) Oh, and my 401K/pension is growing nicely with SHW - my parent company :D

That is exactly what I'm looking for. I really enjoyed watching MWSF '04 at my local Apple Store in January. So I plan to be at CambridgeSide Galleria about 11:30am on Monday. They setup chairs and had great hospitality.

It looks like Apple is going to role the highlights of the keynote into a presentation on June 30 (Wed).

"Every Wednesday Apple Stores open an hour early to offer free special presentations and demonstrations for business professionals. On June 30, visit Apple Store to get the inside scoop on all of the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference happenings, from Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ keynote address to the unveiling of “Tiger,” the next release of Mac OS X.
Presentation times vary" ---- http://www.apple.com/retail/

A few days late, I know. But if it is not released through quicktime, you can check it out there!

Counting Cables. Hangable iMac=ugly?

Hold on a minute. Let's forget about whether or not Apple CAN make a hangable G5 iMac and consider whether or not they SHOULD or even WOULD. Image you got this nice shiny new metal encased 20 inch LCD with a CPU stuck to the back. It's hanging above you desk and it looks great (Yes, I know you COULD put it in your living room, but WHY. I for one do not want to email, browse, edit video, etc. from across the room on a couch) Anyway, let's even imagine that you have a standard wireless mouse and keyboard. Great. Now you have to plug in all the other spokes to this digital hub: power, ethernet and/or modem, printer, scanner, speakers or audio out, audio in, USB for digital camera or card reader, USB or Firewire for external disk drives, iSight, and last but not least the iPod. Now who would want that rat's nest running over your desk and up the wall? Not me. Just my $.02.

Considering how absolutely unexpected AirPort Express was, and how the sole other update has been speed bumps in the PowerMacs, somehow I'm thinking of that mouse patent a long while back, where Apple patented a mouse with a circular scrollwheel (horizontal, a la iPod) instead of the normal vertical dial. That said, the small-form-factor iMac certainly does seem more plausible, but could Apple finally be releasing the heralded two-button mouse? (second button in the center of the scroll wheel)
Points to Ponder.

While the iPod wheel mouse sounds nice, I don't think that it would be all the ergonomic.

"All this speculation about WWDC, and all we get is a two button mouse!" I can see the Apple flame wars now

Broadcast?

****! No broadcast? This is really pissin me off. Why wouldn't they broadcast this one? Tiger is a huge ****in thing! Why would they choose not to broadcast live? At least at the Apple Stores. At this point is it not even at the Apple Stores live? What are my options here? If getting a huge ass 12 foot dish is my only option then ****. There's no way I'm gonna be able to get one of those ancient things. Why don't they just broadcast via Quicktime!?!?!?!?!?!!!!!

I am also very discouraged by the way that Steve Jobs has been asking lately. I plan on making a phone call to my local Apple Store to get the real deal. :(

Something other than "parts supply shortages" has to account for the thin inventory on the current iMac's.

I am starting to think that there will be a bump in the iMac's this coming week.

I am having a better understanding of the heat issues in doing an iMac G5. It would mean a whole new form factor, that may not meet the consumers expectations.

I'll repeat myself a bit. I think that the iMac needs to go to 8x SDD since the eMac has that drive. Also given that Apple added value by upping some minor hardware on the PB's, that same thought process has validity for the iMac. BT and AE built-in. I see 160GB HDD as standard. The 15" goes bye-bye. Video cards don't mean much to me for my use, but i could see an upgrade there (though some may not find it an upgrade). Price points would remain as they are now.

One thought that did cross my mind is, with the iMac, is the cooling sufficient to handle dual G4 processors? For if they won't do a iMac G5, then that would breath some life till the next update for the iMac.

Nothing ever meets consumer expectations, and there will always be things that someone will complain about. A competitor did something vaguely similar, or they did it cheaper, or they have some special deal that they prop up in hidden ways, or the consumer bought into the impossible, weaslish claims of most marketing departments... This is the reality.

I call BS, on multiple counts. The 8x Superdrive is a shoe-in, considering that Apple seems to stick to a single speed across the board for desktops, and then to a single speed for laptops. However, the rest is more than a little suspect. BlueTooth and Airport Extreme aren't built-in on the PowerMacs, so why would they be on the iMac? The same goes for 160GB drives and new graphics cards, since the standard on the low-end tower is 80GB and a GeForce FX 5200. I'm not sure exactly what you mean when you claim that the 15" screen will be dropped, but the addition of a larger model would mean either an even heavier computer so that a counterbalance could be kept, or the adoption of a wholly different layout.

Two G4s would eat about as much as the typical output for a 970FX at 2.0ghz, or right around 25 watts. This is assuming you're using a pair of MPC7447A chips clocked at 1.5ghz, which would output around 26 watts at typical. The cooling issues are similar, but not as pronounced.

If some major change wasn't in the works, there's no way Apple would have let the iMac lag behind the eMac for so long.

Also, don't forget that we have yet to see the "Power Mac 8,1".

Something "Wicked" This Way Comes - if not at WWDC, then at Expo Paris. ;)

Mmm... tastes like Strangeberry.
LOL :D I wondered what you meant, so I typed in Strangeberry at Google. Gotta love that search engine :p

January 27, 2004 - SAN JOSE, CA – TiVo (NASDAQ: TIVO) today announced that it has acquired Strangeberry Inc., a small Palo Alto-based technology company specializing in using home network and broadband technologies to create new entertainment experiences on television. The acquisition will enable TiVo to accelerate its strategy, unveiled earlier this month at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), to extend the TiVo® service beyond digital video recording to include a much broader, richer entertainment experience for subscribers.
Imagine what Apple could do with all this...
