I was thinking that myself. If it's just a retro fit with a bunch of wasted space it just won't be right for a pro box, IMHO.
come on now, it's not a a bad looking case at all. With the extra space you can slide in a few more harddrivces. :D

What would suggest for the MacPro case? Maretials, look, options?

I think with all the extra space they would be likely to add things like,
second optical bay
three or four hard drives
more ram!!
maybe an additional PCIEx16 for SLI

But who knows. One thing is for sure though, a case redesign would have cost $$ so they are able to offer the new gen at a lower price point. Maybe only $50 but I'd rather have the $50 than the new style case.
Just a thought...

here's how it's going down, Keynote start's Jobs enter's a little update on how things are going with apple, next an update on the features of leopard and the first bomb of the day, Now on stores!.

Nice job, but you needed to get the color casting a little better of the Leopard disk. How about this:

Remember the beige G3's? When Jobs first came back, he put the 233 G3's into the same beige boxes the old 604's were in so that they could be released sooner.

They weren't exactly the same. They were similar, but at the point the G3 was released I don't think Apple was thinking "We're switching processor so we also need to switch case style".

This is a highly unpopular viewpoint, I know, but I have both a Beige G3 and a Blue and White (the BW's at work, the Beige is at home running Jaguar and being a large storage area and communal web access machine in the living room), and I have to say I think the Beige is infinitely more attractive than the Blue and White. In fact, I've always thought, since I got it, it's a very attractive looking machine, conservative but elegant. But then the whole translucent colours and bulging curved surfaces thing I thought was garish, whether it was from Apple or anyone else.

The case LOOK (and materials) is fine. My objections with the G5 case are 1) it's so freaking big and heavy and 2) it offers little user functionality. I'd like to see Apple slim the case back down to a G4 size. The MDD case size was perfect, and it held 4 HDDs and 2 opticals. The only reason the G5 case is the size it is is to accomodate the all the fans the G5 required + the monster heatsinks. I also wouldn't mind having more FW and USB ports, but that is a logic board design issue.

I think the new MBPs would be the "one more thing." Everyone expects the MacPro to be released, or at least announced with a shipping date. Few expect an all new MBP, case and all. Personally I think Steve might save something like that for MWSF. I guess we'll see.

Case design

It's just a banner and not a product announcement! Everyone's acting like a picture of a G5 on a banner is a picture of an intel Mac Pro. If Apple intros a new Mac Pro I can just about guarantee you it'll be a redesign.

Link from 2003.

It appears that Apple filed a number of new trademarks in early July.
Apple has added Lynx, Cougar, Leopard, and Tiger to their collection of trademarks, under the common category of "computers; computer software; computer operating system software".

This may suggest that Apple will be continuing on their recent spree of naming major Mac OS X releases after members of the feline family.

Most likely candidates for 10.6 and .7 unless they go to OS11. :)

OS X feature hopes.

I previously added a couple features I'd like to see in Leopard, but there's one feature I don't hear many people talk about, but I'd like to have.

With Core Audio, I'd like to be able to route any audio source to the Music Express. I'd also like to have multiple sound sources out, for say a home system that allows me to push different music to different sources. So if I have 2 music expresses and a m-audio card, I'd like to be able to send 3 different music sources to each card. Sounds nuts, but it would be a great feature. Complete audio flexibility.

Take it one step further and allow iTunes to stream several tracks to different audio sources. That would be a nice direction to make a Mac center of your home entertainment system.

Why do I feel like nothing big is going to be announced...maybe I'm still jaded after the last keynote....

I just wanna see some new toys, iPhone, new Pod, something really interesting..

But, my guess is the big deal will be the new Mac Pro, and it will look just the same....and will be not very exciting, but it will be really fast...and of course the new OS, but it won't even be available for another few months at least, so...meh to that too...

refburb prices...

I'm very excited to see what Monday brings....

I'm having a strong feeling about seeing the new Nano as 1) I bought one recently and every time I buy any Apple Product it is replaced a month later, and 2.) the refurbished price got a nice price cut. Grrrrrrr. (same with displays.)

The rumored features of Leopard aren't exciting to me though. They are what you'd expect. Updates to the core apps. I'm hoping there is some killer new features that's aren't just under the hood improvements.

I've always wanted Apple to steal that one useful feature of Windows, double-clicking the title bar to fill the screen with the current window. I think the only reason they haven't is 'cos they didn't think of it first.

Is there a keycode to do this? The maximise button is too small and doesn't always fill the screen...

Wish they'd put it in Leopard.

As mentioned, we've seen the trademark for Lynx and Cougar. And we haven't seen Lion yet. Nor Ocelot. (I've always liked that name.) So we've got at least enough to last through 10.9. And, of course, there are many more 'big cats' out there with more esoteric names.

What about "Kitty"?

10.5 will be the last version of OS X ..Then it will be OS XI. ;)

Definitely possible. But for the record, OS XI < OS 11 < OS X "Puddy Tat". "OS XI" is teh lamers. :)

Unless they combined it to Osxi and pronounced it Ozzie. Like Ray Ozzie, now that would be funny.

Touché ;) Still, I really think it will be released this year so I hope they have all the artwork finished.

Uncle Walt says it sucks.

Well, Panther was previewed at WWDC 2003 and released in October 2003, too separate Disk Art. Sorry to burst your bubble again, but the disk art is not finalized, although its of marketting quality. I think the product box using that graphic art would hot!

courtesy of dictionary.com:

mountain lion
n. Chiefly Western U.S.
A large powerful wild cat (Felis concolor) of mountainous regions of the Western Hemisphere, having an unmarked tawny body. Also called catamount, mountain cat, panther, puma, also called regionally cougar, painter.

Hell. They've already used "puma" and "panther;" as long as we're re-using synonyms here, i've got my fingers crossed for OSX: "painter" or "catamount". :D

I couldn't agree more. In terms of style points, the G5 case is all aces. However, if they could keep the style while making it smaller and lighter than a sherman tank, I'd be quite pleased. And if they try for even a second to sell a Mac Pro without FW 800, I am storming my way to Boston to shake Steve, myself.

Hahaha

Thanks Hurtley! Of course there are other kitty's. yeah, Lion, and Cougar is nice, Ozelot, too. Kinda like Cougar. I always thought the bigger the (OS) number the bigger the CAT:D .

What I like to get from the WWDC is the announcement of a new formfactor for the MBPs. AT least a bit different. No screen wobble (a better hinge design to avoid that), and better quality control...

We'll see.

Let me guess... you're a former Windows user?

I'd hate it if they did that. And I know they won't. It goes against the way the Mac has worked since the early 90's.
