WWDC Snow Leopard and Safari 4 Screenshots

German site Apfeltalk.de has posted (via Engadget) screenshots from Safari 4 as well as Apple's preview release of Snow Leopard given to developers at WWDC.

Not surprisingly, since the next version of Mac OS X is being billed as having few new features, there isn't a whole lot to capture in screenshots. "No new features" isn't entirely accurate, of course, as Apple is focusing on underlying performance and stability in Snow Leopard.

The screenshots, however, do capture the new Address Book with Microsoft Exchange support coming in Snow Leopard. Apfeltalk.de also provides a series of images capturing Safari 4's "Save as Web Application" feature which allows users to save specific web pages as "Site Specific Browsers". This allows users to save specific websites as self-contained applications that can be launched independently of Safari. Fluid is a 3rd party application that provides similar functionality on current versions of Mac OS X and Safari.

News must be a bit thin on the ground :cool:

I hope Snow Leopard is at a lower price than Leopard, otherwise I can see quite a few people giving it a miss.
 
I'd love to know more about the format of the "save as web page" function in Safari. If it's another proprietary format a la Internet Explorer, then no thank you. I'll pass. If Apple is downloading all necessary files and bundling them into a single document where you can still get at the individual HTML and page elements, then bravo.
 
I still wounder why people want Snow Leopard to be less expensive?! Many people would change of machine to get more speed, you will be able to do soo just by upgrading software is a prety good news to me.

I would like to have more informations about Grand Central and OpenCL, thoses two features can be the real deal of Snow Leopard. If Apple can make them as they seem (so far not much have been say about it) to be, they can be a real break through of compuer programming.
 
I don't understand all this excitement over self-contained web pages. How is that better than just opening a tab in Safari (which most users will already have open at all times anyway)? If that's one of the major features in Snow Leopard, I'll pass. Then again, I don't consider Dashboard and widgets particularly useful either (over a stanalone app or a web page).
 
OLD! A friend told me about this a few weeks ago. XD Arn, catch up to the times... wait maybe I said too much already. :eek:
 
What's the status of ZFS in Snow Leopard? This is from a a user that released information to LoopRumors:

- the default filesystem in Snow Leopard is ZFS, though HFS is still supported
- the requirements on the DVD indeed state that it requires an Intel processor
- when browsing through the file systems, there was no mention of PowerPC in the entire OS
- a new version of Safari is also included, which seems to load pages a bit faster than the existing version

Does that mean ZFS is bootable in Snow Leopard?

I'm sure Safari will be snappier :)

Um.... because Engadget put it up.... and there were no screens of it yet on MR....

No acutally it was leaked--- and my friend had a copy of it downloaded. So.. lol I owned you. He said that when you open a simple DMG the finder crashed. XD
 
The icons generated for web applications look pretty spiffy. However, a REALLY nice feature that I'd like to see in a future Leopard build is making CUSTOM stacks via drag and drop. That'd be awesome.

Duh... how else did you think they'd free up space and make it more reliable?

There's already a freeware app out that does the same thing, either removes ppc code from all your apps, or all the intel code....

I forget what it's called but it reduces your applications folder size in half, as well as your memory usage, not to mention faster app load times...

Well, I hate to rain on everyone's parade, but I know who submitted that info. It was a friend of mine trying to dupe LoopRumors. :rolleyes:
 
The Web Inspector has been redesigned in Safari 4 preview as well. I don't care for the new layout at all, especially since I have to use it for my job making Mac-compatible web apps and custom webkit browsers.

xslimmer. It won't change the memory usage or load times as PPC code is never loaded from Universal binaries on an Intel platform. I don't see how not including code that will never get executed would make things more reliable.

Um how did you own me by saying you know of a guy that has a leaked copy? Leaked = illegal, released through dev center is not leaked, it is pre-released... mmk owned...

Mmmk, I got owned there, but.... why is my iPhone dev account not free enough to show it? I don't see safari 4 in the mac dev center, i'm guessing I have to register for free mac dev center then?....
 
downloading the preview now. Need to do a backup before I install.. d'oh!

they kept it fairly quiet didnt they :p

Exctly. Why clamor for news about Safari 4, when you can sign up at connect.apple.com for free and download it for yourself (for Tiger or Leopard).

Personally, I'm running Safari 4 right now to write this. It's nice. Haven't tried the Save As Web Application feature yet, though.

If you want to know what Safari 4 is all about, by all means, download the developer preview. At the very least, pull down the latest WebCore nightlies to see the performance boost (which doesn't even require signing up with Apple).
