people who cancel others based on their X activity.

You are saying it as if it is a bad thing.

I would not hesitate to “cancel” (distance from my life) anyone that behaves in a way that crosses my boundaries of acceptable behaviour.
This boundary might sit in different places for different people, but we all have a limit of criminal and/or morally reprehensible behaviour that we are willing to tolerate.

Anyone claiming otherwise is a liar.

If the author can still see who liked their tweet someone could claim (or post a faked screenshot showing) someone liked their tweet but there will be no way to prove they did or didn't. Could be used to fake support of a cause, fake an endorsement of a product or company, etc.

You mean people who call out other people for liking appalling content? Pasting a "scary" word like "cancel culture" on people holding other people accountable is always such a senseless discourse... You're just doing the exact same thing as people calling everything they don't like "woke".
No I think he means people who say things like "Now you can like all your racist conspiracies freely."

Y'know, those kinds of people.

Since most decisions now are made top down, I can only assume this means Elon's tired of explaining to people on his Company's Boards why he continues to promote (by liking) Racist BS.

"...For example, many people feel discouraged from liking content that might be "edgy" in fear of retaliation from trolls, or to protect their public image."

The problem is that “appalling” is in the eye of the beholder. Who decides what is and what is not “appalling?” Unfortunately, there are people out there who think that we have the right to not be offended, which we don’t in any “free” society.

i mean, twitter is like 99% bots at this point anyways, so it's probably a racist bot liking stuff

including owner Musk – who has received blowback in the past for liking controversial posts – will be able to like whatever they want without it being made public.

And there’s the reason why, Xchan owner can’t handle any criticism about his bigotry so he’s having likes hidden.

But hey, now that Twitter is dead, can someone buy the domain and bring it back? Beluga barrel wont care right? He’s got x.

Yeah, except this behavior used to be more private. My neighbor can buy a communist newspaper if he wants to and like an article but I have no idea. If he likes it on X then I now know. Fill in whatever example you want here. Then there’s a whole group of people calling him a “communist” because he liked one article. Also, there’s a whole subset of people who think if you “Like” one post of a user, you’re endorsing everything they’ve ever said instead of just a single idea, which is insane….

If only they could delete fake accounts...
I've got like 3 new followers every day - 90% of them are fake unfortunately.

Probably a good idea. The only time I ever read about specific people liking something it's always about drama, as if liking something is a weapon the liker can use or their enemies can use against them.

It’s usually someone liking something pretty awful if you hear about it. For example, if someone goes and claims the holocaust didn’t happen and someone else wants to run for office in my area I would very much like to know if they liked that post.

Transparency is a good thing.

I'll just point out that cancel culture isn't anything new... people have been cancelling each other since the dawn of time over every possible reason (being gay, suspected of being a witch, having the wrong skin color or last name, etc)

What I'm suggesting is that it isn't "them", it's "us"
Excuse me, blaming both sides isn’t allowed here. Polarizing takes only. Do better.

Now if only Facebook would stop. And countless other social media platforms I dare not name for fear of suspension. And mainstream online magazines like this one. And get rid of "Reply" too.

Comments are fine. It's feedback (emoji or text) on comments that creates a cesspool of incivility and even anger. Mea Culpa, to my regret.

This isn’t a bad thing overall? Maybe when YouTube removed the dislikes counter they could have removed them both altogether. Mostly to avoid the monkey see monkey do behavior that drives all of it.

Before social media you couldn’t like or dislike an article in a newspaper or like or dislike a tv show. You could get out of your way and send letters or call the show, but mostly we would just vote with our wallets and/or our attention time and talk to the few people around us if they saw x or y episode or article…

if, by “cancel culture” you mean, ”Elon got called out last week for liking creepy hentai”, sure “cancel culture” did this.
that's not cancel culture. that's calling someone out. 🤦‍♂️

premium members can already hide their likes today anyways, but I guess anything to make it sound like Elon did an oopsie, right?
