I used to love doing that as a kid ;) it's how I learned about various inputs at a young age! Does the Xbox need to be switched on to use the HDMI pass-thru feature?
What are the benefits though? Surround receivers and TVs have multiple HDMI inputs and splitters are only a few £ and don't add any lag.

What I love about my PS3 is that everything (TV, amp, PS3) can be operated by my TV remote control. I don't think it's possible with the PS4, oddly enough.

PS4 can be controlled via TV Remote if your TV supports Simple Link. ;)

Re: Xbox one,

Benefit is this. I walk into my room. I say Xbox On. It starts up not only my Xbox, but my TV and my Satellite Box.

I have had to pick up no remote, and yet I'm into my TV. Want to watch BBC 1 I just say it. It is smart enough to hide SD channels and give me the HD channel. Simply say pause and ot pauses, ask record and it records TV.. Had enough watching TV, don't have to pick up any remote simple 'Xbox Turn Off' and 'Yes' to confirm and I've not once had it felt a need to pick up the remote or change either input or channel manually.

I find it very convenient...

However. For me the mist convenient thing with Xbox one over PS4 is not voice commands or HDMI input, but 'Instant Resume' of game.

I find it great to be playing a game, have to go our in the middle of a mission and I can simply turn off my console without thinking of losing progress or needing to spend few minutes getting to a check point.

When I come back in. I can turn on my Xbox and resume the game straight away, without loading screens, without having to restart the level or game etc. Its fantastically convenient and that feature is the one I most wish my PS4 had ..

The PS4 is supposed to be getting a resume feature too, they keep dragging their heels on this one! Absolutely love sleep mode/resuming on handhelds.

All my AV stuff is Bravia so it should play nice but I've not been able to get my TV controller to work with the console! It's a bit annoying. On the PS3 I can switch everything on using the PS3 controller and everything off by pressing the TV power button, but the only way to turn my PS4 off is to use the home button (or use voice commands) and the TV separately. Maybe I just need to mess around with the settings a bit more!

Yeah come to think of it I can only turn it off manually myself too.

I've been loving the Xbox One but the one major con I've found is that TV integration is awful. It not only degrades the image quality but considerably slows down my TiVo for some reason, and it works very unreliably. I've had the picture freeze (not pause) and signal loss issues.

Am looking forward to a TiVo integration app though.

I don't have an Xbox One so I can't really say I prefer one over the other but I can say that I've had a PS4 since day one and now, over a year later, I'm still shocked at how bad Sony are at UI design. I absolutely hate the UI on the PS4 and unfortunately I doubt it'll ever change. Version 2.0 of their system software seemed like a great time to refresh this boring design but it brought pretty much nothing. I really miss the UI of my old Xbox 360 and from what I've seen of the Xbox One it looks even better. My main issue is the ridiculous use of screen space. Most of the screen is empty there's a thin bar of content running across the middle of the screen that shows all your games/apps that you can't even manually sort. Also, it's a next-gen console yet you don't even get a notification when your friend comes online. Wow. :(

Yeah, I can't believe we're 13 months in now and this feature still isn't here. I love being able to just put my Vita to sleep in the middle of playing anything. :)

Maybe in the past? With both Xbox and Playstation being x86 architecture now I can see multiplatform games being available on anything in the future. It'll be so easy to port, you'd be stupid to pass up on such easy extra sales.

Definitely now in these times, as well. There's a chance that my change with DirectX12 that with the closer-to-hardware efficiently it will supposedly provide.

While now more than ever it should theoretically be easier for games to run on all platforms, there's still overhead that causes games to generally run better on consoles, if they're the lead dev. platform.

My 360 died last week and I was reading reviews to decide whether to grab the Xbox One or PS4. The above comment really had me excited as I hate it when I'm between checkpoints and have to put something on hold until I get to one. After hitting up the store and verifying that I do indeed really dislike the feeling of the PS4 controller in my hand, I grabbed the Xbox One. After realizing I had to set the console to automatically sign me in when the console starts for this feature to work properly, I did so and it really is a game changer. Get home from work, turn on the console and in 45 seconds I'm right where I stopped. Between that and the lack of now listening to what sometimes sounded like a jet engine while the fans spun away on my 360, I'm quite happy!

A year in and I am still very happy I went PS4, to be honest I was so disillusioned with the way Microsoft utterly wrecked the Xbox One's launch I went PS4. I had both the 360 and the PS3 and WAS going to get an Xbox One until they ruined it's launch and stated the original DRM mess.

For me PSN Plus is a huge draw also, I had a fair few free games on my PS3 from that. The fact the PS4 ended up being the more powerful console is icing on the cake in my mind. I don't mind the OS layout, the console could be quieter but when it's slim with that much power and the PSU enclosed it's going to have a bit of a noisy fan.

And my friends have PS4's too.

But, now that MS have finally sorted the Xbox One by ditching the camera and lowering the price, then I think that's an equally good console, I won't get one but I don't condone anyone else getting one, it's a good piece of kit with some cracking games.
We need these 3 consoles in the market for the competition, it's just a shame Nintendo seem to be so far behind now, I really won't be surprised if they launch their next home console this year or next. But I have to give kudos to Ninty for updating and keeping the 3DS going in the light on the endless competition from all those phones and tablets.

They're not too far behind. Once again we have 2 fighting for second place with a clear system in front.

Thanks for that Dagless, I didn't realise they were that close to Microsoft! And yes, the 3DS is an anomaly haha, but then again I guess it goes to show when you have the games... the 3DS really doesn't seem to have been dented by all these tablets and phones at all.

Physical buttons/controls and Nintendo 1st party games. That's the difference. Nintendo's doing just fine :) They may never be the #1 console again but they have tons of money in the bank, they're back to being profitable again and you can always count on them to make great games.

I don't think Nintendo will fail to fully honor the comitment they made with Wii U, they appear dedicated to give it its full run regardless.
I doubt they would screw over their existing Wii U customer base by releasing a successor too soon. That's what Sega did with the Saturn and Dreamcast and now they're a struggling sw-only company, a shadow of its former self.
I expect the successor to Wii U to be launched in 2017 or 2018 as was always expected.

We will know about NX more next year. And to be honest, Nintendo is putting a new console every 5-6 years or so ...

Wii ... 2006
Wii U ... 2012
NX ... 2017/18

So yeah ... Wii U still should have about two years to live from Nintendos perspective (official support).

NX is being referred to as a 'platform' rather than a console. It could feasibly turn out that NX isn't a home console at all.

Even they are 1 year ahead of Xbox One though, the fact that they are behind them - going into 2015 with massive games coming for the XB1 & PS4 - with Zelda now pushed to 2016 - what have we got to look forward to on the Wii U thats going to drive sales ?

Xenoblade may be the biggest game it has this year - and as Xenoblade Chronicles proved - it may be great - but it will be niche and won't be a system seller in the west like a Mario game would be.

There's that Mario level maker thing, which I'm in two minds over. I think it could be like Little Big Planet. But yeah Nintendo seems to be 100% backing the 3DS now. I bet we'll see more DLC for Mario Kart and Smash Bros but for full games there isn't a lot.

Yeah does feel like all their eggs are in one basket these days.

That being said would love to see a Zombi U sequel either on wii u or on the other consoles. Not sure who owns rights to the IP Nintendo or Ubisoft.

For Nintendo, I'm looking forward to Splatoon. I'd like to see Monster Hunter 4 brought over to Wii U. Otherwise, not much else to look forward to this year for me.

It must be killing Nintendo to miss a holiday release of the next Zelda, but I'm glad they are taking time to make it right, not rushing it to market bugged like so many other publishers.

I have both, PS4 is so much smoother...

I honestly regret buying the Xbox 1, and that's coming from someone who got both the original xbox and the 360 on release days and mainly used 360 in the previous gen

Still happy with the pair of PS4s. The only game that ever tempts me to pick up an Xbone is the new Tomb Raider, but then logic overrides and says I can wait for the inevitable PS4 release once the exclusivity expires.
