Welcome to 2025, I posted about this a while ago 😉
To be honest, content subscription is proving challenging for streaming businesses.

The business model is now circular. Netflix produce shows and then after a few years licence them to Amazon or Apple to show and vice versa. You see a show under one service, then it disappears only to be accessible on a different subscription.

The future of gaming:
-Own nothing
-Steam in the cloud
-Pay by watching ads before gameplay and anytime you pause.

Alternativ, lease a console for $40 per month over 3 years.

Bravo microsoft. This is great for game preservation:

This is brutal

A new survey shows the scale of Xbox's fall vs. PlayStation and Nintendo in the U.S. — and the scale of the opportunity
Users were asked which console platforms they frequently play on specifically, with PC and mobile excluded from the picture. Of console players in the United States, some 85% frequently play on PlayStation platforms, 76% play on Nintendo platforms, with Xbox coming in last at 58%. The figures suggest that most people own multiple consoles and frequently play across different platforms. What is perhaps most striking is how popular the Xbox 360 still is, which is even giving the Nintendo Switch 2 a run for its money. It aligns with what I've previously heard about Xbox 360 engagement, which is uniquely sticky for Microsoft.

The "future" of gaming, for me, will be emulating old systems on my own hardware.

I'm out on "paying indefinitely" for gaming, and certainly on streaming as the only way to access it (if it comes to that).

I'll do other things with my time before I "subscribe and cloud stream".

I have enough stuff already on my backlog that I could probably never buy another game and still never finish it with my time left.

Good point about streaming. I forgot about that. Not only do you not own the hardware but you don't own the games.

Cool to see the Nintendo DS on the list. It's an awesome console with games that are still worth playing. Am I wrong in saying that Xbox's most successful market is Europe with Japan being where it's least successful?

Yes, you are wrong. Xbox has had the most success in North America with most units being sold there. UK was similarly receptive to Xbox but for the rest of Europe it didn't do as well.

Microsoft switches to monthly hour limits for cloud gaming. Wow.
I wonder if they've ever thought "what happens if people just stop gaming altogether"?

From November, Game Pass plans will include a set number of cloud gaming hours each month:

Xbox Game Pass cloud gaming monthly limits:

  • Game Pass Ultimate: 15 hours
  • Game Pass Premium: 10 hours
  • Game Pass Essential: 5 hours
Once subscribers use their included hours, they can buy additional cloud playtime through the Xbox Store. Currently, Game Pass subscribers can stream without these monthly hour limits. The change means those who use cloud gaming most via Game Pass will end up having to pay more, although Microsoft said this impacts 4% of Game Pass subscribers.

Who bothers with cloud gaming? This has nothing to do with single-player gaming or even gaming online, just streaming a game you don't have installed, right?
