Loving Xcom 2 in Windows 10 on my 2008 Mac Pro w/ 7950 :-D Playing on TV with Steam Controller :D:D:D:D

I am loving Xcom2 at the moment right now, but it severely needs a patch. The "im going to point to a dark spot on the map and wait 5 minutes to start talking" is really getting old. The launch screen also takes lightyears to load (When youre in the ship). Thinking about upgrading my GPU and CPU but pretty sure this is an optimization issue on their end.

Still an amazing game.

It is. I have turned down to run on a potato mode. Still get the "central hiccups", what will call them anyway. Missions where central not as chatty run so much smoother. I am reading windows can get this as well. Something about central loading seems to give us all pain. Missions where an objective is to wipe the board can be "fun". As you wait varying times to be told all done.

Hope its central load up the issue, if it takes this long to read a memory address/fle saying 0 enemies left that would be scary.

Otherwise great game. Modders already working on some sticking points to game play. Once refined should be much more fun to run. And unlike last game should be steam workshop based. Gets us the goodies with less issues (Prior release it was usual windows mods using windows based means).

Mod development catching my eye is no counters while concealed. Its a mechanic sticking point to me really. I am going in stealth ninja style...why does the enemy know I am there to start a counter?

The missions where you get data from a vault set up to blow up show the wth is this factor. Do they just on a whim blow up data vaults when no one known to be around? For those without the game..the argument some have for this is you also get missions you go in hot. No concealment at start of mission, enemies knows you are there. Cases like this....sure....fire up the scorched earth counter.

Well, all I can say is that I am playing it on my late 2015 5k iMac @ 2560x1440 on high settings, and it is silky smooth!
Not sure what the 2 minutes loading is measuring, but it takes 35 secs to get to the main screen, and that's with some unavoidable intro movies.
Great job, as always, from the Feral guys!
EDIT: 22 secs to load to main screen after disabling intro movies.
Are you playing on OS X or are you using bootcamp?

If you're using OS X you must have a different definition of silky smooth. Silky smooth is 60+ FPS at all times. 24FPS is bare minimum to avoid the slide show effect. XCom2 can be played at pretty high settings at 1440P but it is console grade FPS. I'm hoping with bootcamp that this will be resolved.

The load times are inexcusably bad too. On a SSD I'm waiting for what seems like minutes.

XCom2 is so poorly coded that it runs like a dog. SLI doesn't work with it out of the box. You have to go into the nVidia control panel and manually force the graphics card to use SLI to make this game use the second card. It smacks of lazy coding which is odd because their artists really outdid themselves. On max settings I was only getting 30 FPS at 1080P with my 5930K @ 4.7GHz and 2 x GeForce GTX 970 cards in SLI until I created a profile for the game to force the cards to have one card draw a frame and then the other card draw the next frame. This got me up to 60FPS but it is not as good as true SLI. I could probably get the same frame rate at 1440P on the PC if I had that good of a monitor for it.

Right now to play 4/5K you need a single monster GPU like a 980, 980 TI or Titan. The Desktop variant of the 395X would probably do well too.

For my iMac 5K 4GHz Core i7, 16GB RAM, 395X and 1TB SSD the frame rate is not silky smooth.

Here is a screenshot running on my machine and you can see the graphics settings I am using.

Ed, I'm loving the game. another great job by you guys!
The only issues I have are the very long mission/return to base loading times and the fact that when there are messages from base during missions, it is not possible to move. Not sure if that is a design decision or not.
The only other niggle is the few seconds pause after alien activity, or whenever the game is 'thinking'.
Apart from that, fantastic!

@Daisy81 : You did a serious testing !! I am jealous.
I agree too that this game takes so much time to go on and has a very low framerate. Too pity that we cannot enjoy it properly..
I also tried parallels with virtual windows 7 and a pc version but it couldn't boot. Only a black screen on start and then nothing happened, after some minutes it had crashed. I tried two different pc versions but still the same issue. The only problem is during the installation, directx was going to be installed but stopped with an error. On windows 7 by the way there is directx 11 and I believe it is supported despite the fact that this directx was trying to be installed. I don't know what to do and I somehow dislike bootcamp because I have to install it on mac as second virtual windows 7 and you have all the time to reboot the system.

I have been using VMWare Fusion. I generally don't run games on a virtual machine except for old light weight games like roller coaster tycoon 1 and 2 (gems), Civ 3, Alpha Centauri and Diablo 2. I don't play these games very much anymore. Mostly my VM is used for work.

I don't think that this game is going to like being run on a virtual machine. It has code in it to end it just past the legal screen if you have an intel integrated graphics on your computer. I'm not sure why they did this. I mean of course the game would have to be played with all the eye candy off but then it's essentially like X-Com which ran fine on a Iris 6100.

This weekend I'll try to get boot camp loaded on my iMac again and make a video of it playing X-Com 2 in OS X and in Windows along side my gaming machine playing X-Com. I'll show how to get the SLI working. I don't have a 4K or 5K screen so I'm going to try it in surround mode at 5760x1080 on the PC. Obviously this will mean that rather screen recording that portion of the test I will have to use my camera on a tripod and try to keep the image from looking like junk on the camera.

I have noticed that X-Com 2 loads just as fast on a SSD as a 7200RPM drive. Not cool. :(

With i5 retina late 2015 iMac 27'', 24gb ram and radeon m390, unfortunately I have medium performance, around 30 fps. The best results is around 40 but with resolution at 2048x1152. 1920x1080 is too ugly but whatever resolution more than 2048x1152 is laggy. I have done the trick with XComEngine.ini in both folders that I found it and I didn't see any difference. The game is playable BUT it has performance issues.

I have uploaded my settings.

Do we have on mac any similar like video graphics settings like on windows or direct x ?? Something to configure except the settings ingame ?

Thanks.
What is the ini trick you are referring to? :D

Please read here as I found it in the first page of this thread. Someone posted it but seriously I didn't find any help with these ini files unless I'm doing something wrong.

Cool thanks! :D I'll try that again when I get back home. I'm working after hours this week. :(

I have enjoyed this game thoroughly on my 2013 27in iMac. I finished it over the weekend and I appreciated the recent patch which reduced the load times a good bit but there's still plenty of room to go. On the last mission I had some major graphic glitches and crashes. After a couple restarts, they did not happen. I'm now going through a 2nd play through

They release a patch? I wonder when my machine will see it.

Now that you mention it there has been some glitches with the cursor not using the custom cursor. Sometimes the custom cursor and the default cursor flickers on and off. Honestly the default cursor is fine if it is easier to simply disable it.

Edit: I'm currently on the assault the radio tower near the end of the game. I'm loving the game itself. Amazingly awesome. If the performance can be smoothed out a bit it would be perfect. As is I can't wait for the expansion. I so want to be able to make my own robot troopers and it would be awesome if I could customize more of them then in the first game. customize the armor, maybe have two heavy weapon slots and like a tank provide cover for the troops.

I just found a game breaking bug where I can no longer save my game. I'm near the end of the game but this is enough to make me want to walk away from this game. How was this released so broken?

is there any way to restart the level or check the saves as files (rename, get backup, etc)?

Where does the game store it's save files on the machine?

I tried deleting old save files. I tried quitting to the desktop and reentering the game. I even tried overwriting a save file.

Overwriting didn't result in the new save file being written over the old save. The old save persisted and the new save was nonexistent.

Nothing I have done will enable me to save the game. I haven't tried a new game yet but in all honesty I want to beat the game but now that means I have no way to back up my progress if stupid things like the cursor breaks or the game locks up which happens often.

That all sounds very bizarre, we haven't had an similar reports from anyone on Mac or Linux. Have you contacted Feral's support with details?

Edwin

You can always use the handy "Open Preferences Folder" in the pre game launcher (Support tab) to get you most of the way there.

Well I'm reporting it now. Unfortunately it is easily reproducible in my install on my iMac because it happens every time now. I'll make a screen recording of the issue. Is there a direct bug report link for them?

Edit:

So I went into the game to make a screen recording at the game made a liar of me and was able to save again. On the one hand I tickled pink that I can proceed with what I think is the final mission but on the other hand now it's a more annoyingly persistent intermittent issue. I'll keep an eye out for it and have a screen recording ready if it happens again.

On Mac, it's /Users/xxxxx/Library/Application Support/Feral Interactive/XCOM 2/VFS/Local/my games/XCOM2/XComGame/SaveData

Thanks I will check the folder and see what the save folder is looking like.

Could have been related to Steam Cloud as for this game that is 100% controlled by Valve Steam Client. I have seen some large lag on that from time to time. Just a thought.

As for contacting support and what to do include the support tab in the pre game launcher has a load of details as does the Read Me (again accessed from the launcher). I'd read those as it saves me pasting all the detailed instructions here.

Glad to see your playing again and don't hesitate to get in touch if something needs our assistance.

Ed,

Do you have any notion as when this game will be available for purchase on the Mac App Store?

Thanks!

Thanks Edwin. :D

BTW I beat the game on veteran mode today. That last battle was crazy. I'm loving the character customization options. I'm going to ratchet up the difficulty a notch.
