I have a 27'' iMac 2009 model with Core i5-750,i know the cpu causally could upgraded to Core i7-860 2.8GHz(the Apple offered from the factory).

I would like to know if it can be upgraded to the Xeon X3460 2.8GHz??The X3460 CPU has the same specifications as the i7-860,also could be seen as the server version of the i7-860.
In this 2015 year thread, https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/imac-11-3-mid-2010-and-xeon-x3430-lets-talk-about.1944115/
The 2010 iMac change the i3 to the Xeon, but it can't show the correct id of the Xeon cpu in About This Mac only.I don't really care the correct show of About This Mac,it don't bother me.I think that X3460 could run in the 2009 iMac as the i7-860 is the win.
Does anybody used to try it?Let‘s discuss the possibility.

I also want to know can I change the CPU to the Core i7-870 2.93GHz(Apple offered in the 2010 model from the factory).

My English is poor, thanks for you guys' attention&discussion!

I got both core i7-870 and core i7-860 on my iMacs 2009 & 2010. There are also core i7-880 (equivalent Xeon X 3480) but these are rare and expensive.
Their prices are mostly the same as the xeon family (X3470 & X3480). So I would just skip the Xeon and use core i7 to save my time in trouble shooting and seeking for solution.

Thanks for your reply and experiments sharing!I totally agree that solution way and it's time-saving and safe plan.In my country, the X3460 is 13 dollars,i7-860 is 22 dollars(double price to the X3460).And the X3470 is 20 dollars, i7-870 is 25 dollars. They are old CPUs,the price of them look so close,to buy the i7 is the best choice.Out of my curious,I just want to know the Xeon on the A1312 iMac could work as Core do,haha!

It would be great to get the Xeon working and OSX recognising the Xeon CPU, we just have watch the other thread on firmware modification and wait to see the final results and how easy it is to achieve.
