I have only been half following this thread, but the higher end XEON's are available now.

No wonder they put the low end in the configuration

Neobit's Xeon's

As someone else will say it anyway, despite the prices on those Apple would get them cheaper and the 2.26GHz Xeons they are using are half the price of the old processors the 2008 Mac Pro had.

A few site's have listed them as available for a couple of weeks or so.

Still no official information from Intel or board makers on DP boards yet. Makes it kind of hard to choose parts yet, without it being somewhat of a gamble IMO. Let alone any reviews, which can help immensely. :p

Interesting, particularly the LSI SAS option. Unfortunately, I'm not sure it would work under OS X. IIRC, LSI doesn't make drivers for OS X, and the only other possibility I can think of, are Apple's RAID card drivers. No way to be sure if that would work, and an expensive experiment if it doesn't. :(

Any updates on this?

Could someone recommend a good site to find out when xeon nehalem motherboards are available?

Not yet, AFAIK. We haven't yet hit March 29, as stated by Intel as the Official Release date.

Nothing has been posted a day or two ago by board makers at least. We'll have to be patient, but you're welcome to search the net. Rather easy. ;) :D

What, and give people something they could really get some power out of? NEVER! :p

I would think a few of the slots are 8x/16x switched, if not all 3. The balance being dedicated 8x. Now if it has OC friendly firmware, that would be awesome! :D

2 (x16) PCI-E 2.0,
4 (x8) PCI-E 2.0 (in x 16 slot),
1(x4) PCI-E slot

Supermicro have 40 new boards up today

It's reasonable at any rate. ;) :p

I looked very early this morning, and board makers I was interested in, still hadn't posted anything, though a quick search of Provantage gave quite a few choices. :)

I'll have to take a look later this evening, as I've a function to attend. :D

Yeah seems the NDAs and stuff expired at a certain time and everyone sort of announced together.

Here's what I've located so far:
Super Micro's offerings (many, as Umbongo pointed out). ;)

Gigabyte has a few as well, split into two catagories. Server (as in Rackmount), and Workstation. (The workstation catagory has a DP board, and is capable of fitting a normal case [ATX, CEB, or E-ATX, depending on board]). :D

I'm still trying to get info from ASUS, but the site has a LOT of traffic I think, and I'm having a difficult time getting the pages. :(

Just noticed that Newegg had 7 DP 1366 boards up and they're all under $600. I want to know if any of them overclock. :D

As do I. ;) :D

That's why I'm waiting for ASUS. Given their recent history, they're likely the best bet. Super Micro's offerings DO NOT, and I want to take another look at Gigabyte, as it didn't look like their's would either. :(

Here's ASUS's DP boards for the Xeon 5500 series. (Select Intel Dual Processor under Motherboard area to the left). :D

Z8PE-D18
  • 18 DIMM slots
  • Nice slot config (up to 3* x16 PCIe 2.0 + 2 (or 3)* x8 PCIe 2.0 + PCI32 + PCIe 4x (1.0)) [Check board specs, as one of the x16 slots is tied to an x8 slot]
  • SSI EEB form factor, so an E-ATX case would be needed

It's unknown if any of the boards are capable of OC'ing (not listed on the site), so a little more patience is needed. ;) (It may be in a yet unreleased board, or is actually possible. Not a lot of details).

Too bad it doesn't have any PCI-E slots.

a question that i had regarding this was would a retail version of OSX work with buying/building a dual 1366 system or would the hackintosh be the only option? cuz i have been thinking about building myself this kind of system ever since i saw the prices on the new mac pro 8 core which made me almost cry in disappointment

Actually, it does. :D

From the specs page:
1 * PCI-E x8 (Gen1 x4 Link) (Auto disable if PIKE slot is occupied)
Slot Location 2: 1 * PCI32
Slot Location 3: 1 * PCI-E x16 (Gen2 x16 Link) (Auto switch to x8 Link if slot 4 is occupied)
Slot Location 4: 1 * PCI-E x16 (Gen2 x8 Link)
Slot Location 5: 1 * PCI-E x16 (Gen2 x16 Link) (Auto turn off if slot 6 is occupied)
Slot Location 6: 1 * PCI-E x16 (Gen2 x16 Link for 1U Full-Height/Full-Length Card) (Auto turn off if slot 5 is occupied, MIO supported)
Additional Slot 1: 1 * PIKE Slot for Stroage expansion
It's a good possibility, especially for those interested in multiple x16 slots (operational, not just electrical), and plenty of DIMM slots. :)

The ability to OC with it, is unknown, but I'll presume it can't, given ASUS made no mention of it. :( Some coolers might be a very tight fit, or not work at all (interference with other components).

The easiest way I'm aware of, is use a retail copy of OS X, and Vanilla Kernel (provides EFI Emulation).

There's plenty of information on the web, including links to Vanilla Kernel and How-To's. Try "Vanilla Kernel OS86" in a search. ;) This might get you started. :)

but what im worried since these motherboards are still so new that they might not be compatible with w.e. "work arounds" to get OSX working

Vanilla Kernel isn't too bad, but issues are always a possibility. I'm waiting for SL to drop before trying to hack OS X, as getting Leopard, would be a waste of cash this close IMO. :p

when is SL suppose to be coming out? I heard around the same time Win7 was but Win7 keeps changing dates to a sooner date then someone said by Summer or after SL should drop

It looks like June or July of this year (actual ship date). :)
