The phone if considered a "copy", which is impossible given the new iPhone isn't out yet, but even if you do consider it a copy, it's actually a better product design than the "real thing". Xiaomi found a way to go bezel free without having a stupid bump cutting the screen in half as the new iPhone is rumored to have. So, good on them.

The laptop however... well. ;)
Cutting the screen in half? What are you talking about? Plus this phone has a bezel. It’s at the bottom which forces you to have to turn the phone upside down for selfies (and anything else you might need to use a front facing camera for). That’s retarded.

Shame they're missing the biggest and best features: MacOS and iOS
Exactly. All they've offering is looks.

It's like saying these are real apartments you can live in :)

I don't understand the Windows hate. It sucked donkey balls on version 8, but it got better with 8.1 and is extremely nice to use with Windows 10. With a few exceptions of exclusive programs I find the two operating systems to be fairly equal. I'll even give Windows a nod for implementing touch screens and inking. Not important for a desktop, but I use touch frequently on my Surface Pro 4 and the caseworkers at my job use it on their laptops to get client signatures.

Apple does need to be concerned about phones like the Mi Mix 2. Hardware wise it is extremely competitive with the iPhone X at half the price. What is holding it back is the Android OS which suffers from the same issues Windows does in that it needs to run on thousands of different hardware configurations and as a result is not as optimized as iOS. Apple could find itself in serious trouble if a company hired competent software engineers to completely optimize the code for their specific device. Get all the advertising and data collection code out of the OS, develop integrated drivers for the specific components (camera, audio, etc.) and it would run a whole lot better. Software scales; once you've got it working once you can put it on millions of devices without any significant additional cost. I'm surprised Samsung hasn't gotten it right yet.

Guess the MacBook Pro refresh came a bit early, a bit cheap, and without the Apple. Oh and the Mi Mix 2 is also just as cheesey, too. All of their devices also have hog washed LCD's, too. Sad!

I like it, nice design, ceramic body, good feature set. Hell if this thing ran iOS I’d jump on it in a heartbeat.

the Laptop is clearly inspired (lol, it's a copy) from the MacBook pro. I just find it amusing that Xiaomi is able to give us basically the same exact design, but keep all the ports and things in it that people complain about Apple's laptop (for good or bad).

the Xioami Mi Mix2 however, isn't a copy of anything Apple has. Whether you like the design or not (bottom Chin), this is the 2nd iteration of the phone they've had and the first one has been out since October 2016. There's nothing about the nearly bezelless design that they've copied from Apple (unless you want to imply that somehow something that came out almost a year ago copies what Apple's releasing tomorrow)

Why?
No, seriously. Why do you think that?
I mean by all means pick the Xiaomi phone apart, but don't just make things up.

Is The Verge wrong?

Another compromise is the front-facing camera, which has been more seamlessly integrated into the bottom panel but will still require you to hold the phone upside-down for selfies. The rear-facing camera, meanwhile, uses the same 12-megapixel sensor with 4-axis OIS as the Mi 6, but pairs it with a single f/2.0 lens — no dual-camera action here.

So you think Jony Ive woke up one day (or Phil Schiller came into his office) and said let’s remove all the ports on the next MBP so we can make more money off of dongles? You don’t have to like that Apple rips the band aid off quickly rather than slowly but this isn’t about dongles. I’m sure Ive would love it if he never had to design another dongle again.

And who’s to say Apple makes a significant amount off dongles anyway. I have one Apple dongle for my MacBook Pro and it overheats so bad with a sandisk mini usb flash drive that I’ve gone third party for most of my dongles.

what really suffer windows ,linux and osx is services, agent daeomon..

We need mutiple configuration like

1. gaming
2. programming
3. video editing
4. perfomance..

OSX doesn't have any GUI
Windows have their problem with registery and unwanted microsoft service
Linux with i dono what to said sometimes systemctl sometime launctl sometimes service ..

OSX should be more better because they control hardware and software compare to messy vendor and hell DLL in windows.

This is what I have been talking about with the Chinese changing tech into a cheap commodity. Prices are going to drop hard. The Chinese are making very decent gadgets nowadays that are almost as good but less than half the price of an equivalent Samsung or Apple device. Makes you really think twice by dropping $1000 on a Note 8 or iPhone 8 when you can pocket the 500 bucks.
I thought that, then tried some of these cheaper highly specced Chinese upstarts in stores and concluded no, they aren't even close yet for my tastes. There's always something in them that disrupts the illusion that you're holding premium quality at a bargain price, like janky display issues when you least expect it or nauseating distortions while panning around filming video. I decided I'd rather buy used iPhones than one of these things if and when my budget gets tight again, like when we go on retirement income while paying college tuitions.

And for reasons that are too PRSI for me to discuss here...

Xiaomi can bitemi.

the verge offered their "solution" to the angle that the front facing camera in default position offers.

you don't actually need to flip it over to use. however, for users who are used to a top mounted camera, that is the work around.

For many it's silly and useless and would stop them. For many, who don't do selfies, they won't care. I almost never, ever use my front facing camera so it wouldn't be that much an impact to me. I think I can count the selfies I've ever taken with 1 hand.

3. It's made by a Chinese company - actual quality is uncertain, not to mention trust - can you be sure there is no spyware embedded in silicone in their products?
Spyware embedded in breast implants?o_O:p:D I do not approve... of the spyware. I do not approve of the spyware in breast implants. I also do not approve of spyware embedded in silicon chips.;)

Made by a Chinese company... uh, yeah. Fruit too low even for me.:D

That's quite a huge "if" scenario. Which is why it will never happen.

I use an iPad and iPhone because they run iOS. I use an iMac because it runs MacOS.
How are devices that run Android and Windows a rival or competition for Apple products?

These are rivals for other Android phones and Windows laptops. Perfect for people who are sadly stuck in a lesser ecosystem for some reason.

Xiaomi really annoys me with their product copying. At least the phone is different this time. But, that laptop is totally Apple's design. It's pretty ridiculous how a can get away with pirating so much. I'm sure Apple never filed true grievances against them in China because Apple was trying to penetrate the Chinese market. And, they probably realized China would not be happy with Apple lodging patent complaints "within China" while also trying to court the Chinese market. I guess we'll see if that was the best decision for Apple... It does irritate me how a copy of only 4 years (or maybe it's 5 years old) can openly steal designs and suddenly be one of the largest cell phone players in the market.

Not a chance for me. I value the software and reputation/reliability of the company more than I do the physical hardware. This isn't the case for everyone, but I'm sure I'm not alone.

When I lived in Beijing, I bought a Xiaomi MI2. It was a pretty decent phone. It turns out the phone was a copy of a Xiaomi MI2. The copy wasn't too bad but I did purchase a real one after. The Chinese will copy anything. If you get bored look for Zotye Auto or Landwind. I think the Chinese govt has set up some sort of intellectual property rights division lol

I really don't understand why companies want to keep setting up shop in China. If it they steal your idea and it benefits a Chinese company and you complain, there is nothing you can do.

Jaguar / Landrover tried suing Landwind in China and were basically laughed at lol

And I have to wonder how much data gets sent to Xiaomi to be stored in China about you while you use it? While I don't like everything Apple does, I trust them more. I always think of Lenovo and the spyware they were caught red-handed pre-installed into Windows when I see things like this. If I bought one I'd wipe it clean first before using it. Even then, in this era where we know the shenanigans going on in technology and spying I'd still be a bit suspicious.
Their phones were caught doing this also and Youtuber's and sites still use the devices. Google and Facebook are just as bad.
