I mentioned the Macbook because it happens to be the best laptop line on the market, not because I thought you needed another Apple ("Apple"?) alternative. It's just serendipitous that the best alternative is another Apple product.

Best to you maybe. Not always the best overall. I'd actually say the best laptop for the field is the Panasonic Toughbook. It'll take a lot more abuse than any MBP you can wish for.

Did you try Goodreader for managing files and sending attachments while you were using your iPad? It's a bit kludgy but it seems like it it should solve most of your problems of downloading files and then sending multiple attachments.

Yes and thankfully the iPad has that app, it's very nice. However email on Honeycomb is just like a laptop/desktop client. Start the email, click on the paperclip (attach) browse your folders, select file, and add as many files, pics etc.. Hit send. Done.

There are workarounds, I've been using it heavily for the past 9 months. I'm sure if you look through my posting history I probably at one point was bashing Android after the issues with the Evo I tested out for 30 days. However while waiting for the iPad 2 to show up, I decide to try out the Xoom and keep an open mind. After 2+ weeks the email, web browsing, multi-tasking and file system won me over. It simply eliminates many, many steps I have had to do on the iOS to get the same task done.

As I stated before, I want tools that get me from point A to point B as quickly as possible. Honeycomb opened my eye's to some very nice features that iOS, nor apps bring to the iPad. Dealing with attachments on Xoom just makes sense, not having to figure out what app works, which one to copy and forward, exit out of this app, go back into mail, paste... etc... It makes iOS look very dated and lacking.

If iOS 5 brings those types of improvements I"m all about the iPad 2, but currently it's been handed over to the wife to do what it does best. Entertain.

"All the Apple fans live and die with whatever Steve Jobs says. Steve is leading y'all to the edge, blah, blah, blah."

It really doesn't matter what SJ says about a product, most people can't tell you what he said or even how he looks. People buy Apple products because they are good, and they like them. Do understand that most people who buy Apple products do not watch the presentations or unveiling of the new products. They watch the commercials or get word of mouth. So no one is blindly following SJ anywhere. Mostly geeks wait and watch the Apple conferences.

My wife loves her Android-based phone. I don't blame her. It has some very nice features I wish the iPhone had. However, it's not enough to make me want to give up my iPhone. I will get the new iPhone in June ( I have the 3G), and will buy her the new Android-based phone that she wants.

However, she has told me that she will never give up her iPad (the original). Hell, she won't let me touch it.

The GPU in the iPad 2 is better than the Xoom and the CPU performs roughly the same. I think the only advantage for the Xoom hardware wise is the camera and micro SD slot. Also, future upgradability to 4G, but the process is quite silly (though it's an option!). I might be forgetting something but I think that's it.

EDIT: The screen has a higher resolution than the iPad 2's screen, but the iPad 2 screen is actually better in every other aspect as I understand it.

Kind of subjective on that comment, I think.

Higher res, micro usb, HDMI, stereo speakers, SD slot, flash, better cams, more RAM....I dunno guys.

I am not denying that ipad 2 is beating the snot out of Xoom on sales... but it ain't the tech specs.

Higher resolution, worse screen. I don't know why micro-USB would be useful but I don't really know; what can you use it for? There is the HDMI adapter for the iPad 2, but that's an adapter and not standard.

I don't know the quality of the speakers, but I heard complaints about them (location maybe? I'm not sure). Micro-SD slot for storage, yep. Flash, yep, but reviews point out that it kind of sucks. I mean, you could use iSwifter on the iPad if you wanted and probably get a more "complete" experience.

No way to argue that the Xoom's cameras aren't 10x better, but I am not sure what use they are. The cameras on the iPad 2 are specifically for FaceTime, so they actually have a realistic use case, rather then being there to say they are. However, the iPad 2 cameras are ridiculous, I think.

It definitely has more RAM, but I am not sure what kind of comparison can be made here. I don't know the benefits of 1 GB of RAM on iOS vs. Android. I guess future proofing, but I don't know how well that works with Android as each device doesn't have a long update lifespan.

It hasn't even been a year since Apple stopped selling iPhone 3G, yet they have long since stopped providing software updates for it.

The 3G in now almost 3 years old and does not have many of the hardware features that Apple is now working on. I used my 2G for 3 years before I upgraded to the 4 and Apple did a good job of updating the software on it. I feel I got full value for my money!

I don't know...correct me if I am wrong but the Xoom has better specs in all areas than the iPad except for the thickness and mild difference in weight, right?

Wrong. GPU in iPad 2 is far better, iOS uses CPU more effectively and the screen is far better in iPad 2 than Xoom even though with less resolution, for example.
Think like a human. Do not think like a robot (seeing only number) and you won't be scammed.

I don't know what he's talking about but my wife works on e-mail on her iPhone all day long composing, re-plying, attaching, downloading with no single complaint. Could it be better? Sure. Does it get the job done? Yes. Is she satisfied? Yes.

But it does so poorly. So poorly in fact that some sights like ESPN don't work on the Xoom, but on the iPad you are directed to the iPad optimized site, and it works perfectly.

A lot of this is about cost....

Motorola should have released the Xoom at $100 or more LESS than the iPad and they would have done a lot better.

It is

Nope. Xoom has 1 gig of ram to iPad's 512. CPUs are pretty much the same. Xoom screen is widescreen (thus the 'extra' resolution). But the iPad 2s GPU is almost four times faster. https://www.macrumors.com/2011/03/12/ipad-2-gpu-benchmarked-with-impressive-gains/

He's talking about opening mail, create new message, and attach a file. What your wife is doing is opening an App (say Numbers), and sending her file to the email client. She can't open mail, and attach a file to a message directly.
